Jan was an amazing inn keeper! Staying at Casa Del Gavilon was New Mexican hospitality at its finest. Words are inadequate at what a charming and beautiful hacienda it is. We arrived just after sunset. From the Raton Pass to Cimarron, we passed herds of antelope, grazing deer, statuesque elk and even a small flock of turkey. With all the monsoon rains, the high desert was a riot of wildflowers and waving grass. Jan took the time to call us earlier in the day to confirm our arrival time, offer recommendations for dining while en route, as well as local road conditions. Jan remembered our names throughout our stay. She greeted the three of us at the front porch when we arrived after dark. After a brief tour of the grounds, she helped us get settled in the Nairn suite. After a multiple day road trip, we unwound by wrapping ourselves up and stargazing in the many Adirondack chairs staged on a freshly mowed lawn. Even our 13 year-old son was awestruck by the bright creamy smear of the milky way over head. We star gazed for nearly an hour. We laughed and connected in a way we haven't been able to for some time - yes, even after being stuck in a car together for three straight days. Stunning views of mountains and wildlife, amazing service (Amal was outstanding!), and while the Casa is out in the middle of nowhere (kind of the idea), it's a cinch to get to and no float plane or 4X4 necessary to drive right up to the front. And, when you arrive, the staff will be waiting to welcome you and give you a tour.||Rooms, while rustic, is very comfortable (bed, pillows, linens, etc.). The Inn itself is like having full access in front of as well as behind the scenes of an interactive museum. From books, to photos, to art, to architecture, this place has it all! A one night stay is not sufficient to fully appreciate the wealth of options to enjoy at the Casa. ||Furthermore, while I was traveling solo (and enjoyed peace and quiet while diving into a good book next to a warm fireplace in the living room), I would not hesitate to bring my wife and young daughter to join me. In fact, I plan to do so in the future when we can stay more than a couple days. The Casa is a perfect option to act as a base camp for visiting all the richness the area has to offer - Taos, Red River, Angel Fire, and Santa Fe. This will be a future vacation that will be remembered and cherished...
