Jan was an amazing inn keeper! Staying at Casa Del Gavilon was New Mexican hospitality at its finest. Words are inadequate at what a charming and beautiful hacienda it is. We arrived just after sunset. From the Raton Pass to Cimarron, we passed herds of antelope, grazing deer, statuesque elk and even a small flock of turkey. With all the monsoon rains, the high desert was a riot of wildflowers and waving grass. Jan took the time to call us earlier in the day to confirm our arrival time, offer recommendations for dining while en route, as well as local road conditions. Jan remembered our names throughout our stay. She greeted the three of us at the front porch when we arrived after dark. After a brief tour of the grounds, she helped us get settled in the Nairn suite. After a multiple day road trip, we unwound by wrapping ourselves up and stargazing in the many Adirondack chairs staged on a freshly mowed lawn. Even our 13 year-old son was awestruck by the bright creamy smear of the milky way over head. We star gazed for nearly an hour. We laughed and connected in a way we haven't been able to for some time - yes, even after being stuck in a car together for three straight days. In the morning, we ate a gourmet breakfast before heading home. Even my fussy 13 year-old son cleaned his plate. My wife and I plan on coming back soon and making Casa Del Gavilan our main destination. With only 6 rooms available, Jan poured the same amount of loving attention into her guests as a mom who hasn't seen her family for too long. Go meet Jan and let your...

This B&B hits on all cylinders. Stunning views of mountains and wildlife, amazing service (Amal was outstanding!), and while the Casa is out in the middle of nowhere (kind of the idea), it's a cinch to get to and no float plane or 4X4 necessary to drive right up to the front. And, when you arrive, the staff will be waiting to welcome you and give you a tour.||Rooms, while rustic, is very comfortable (bed, pillows, linens, etc.). The Inn itself is like having full access in front of as well as behind the scenes of an interactive museum. From books, to photos, to art, to architecture, this place has it all! A one night stay is not sufficient to fully appreciate the wealth of options to enjoy at the Casa. ||Furthermore, while I was traveling solo (and enjoyed peace and quiet while diving into a good book next to a warm fireplace in the living room), I would not hesitate to bring my wife and young daughter to join me. In fact, I plan to do so in the future when we can stay more than a couple days. The Casa is a perfect option to act as a base camp for visiting all the richness the area has to offer - Taos, Red River, Angel Fire, and Santa Fe. This will be a future vacation that will be remembered and cherished...

We stayed for three days and two nights, and it was wonderful! It is amazingly secluded, quiet, and private. There is absolutely no human noise, only crickets and thunder from the occasional nearby lightning storm. The patio is the perfect, pretty spot to enjoy a meal or some wine. The night sky is so dark, the Milky Way is visible! And the views of the Tooth of Time are second to none. This is not even to mention the superb service we experienced during our stay. Michelle, the innkeeper, made us feel perfectly at home, and the breakfast she cooked in the morning was delectable, especially the homemade apple fritters (yum!). Dave was very amenable to our requests and turned out all the nearby outdoor lights so we could better see the magnificent night sky. It truly was an experience of being home-away-from-home, and we can't wait to visit again in the colder weather to hopefully gather around a warm, cozy fire!

Wow! The Casa gets a 10 out of 10 from me and my husband. We stayed in the Nairn room over the 4th of July long weekend, and it was absolutely perfect. The room is picturesque and roomy, felt like a home away from home. The amazing Innkeeper Polly was an absolute treasure and gave us a wonderful tour of the grounds. The one breakfast were able to stay in for was delicious and truly chefs kiss (you could tell it was made with love and care.) I love all the books and the history available to read for guest on the grounds. In my top 5 things about the Casa was the accessibility to early brewed coffee or a late evening drink with breath taking views. You can tell the groundskeeper has put so much hard work into property and the courtyard was buzzing with so many gorgeous hummingbirds. As soon as we left we already started to plan our trip out there for next year, this place is worth every penny.

My family has been coming here for years. The recent updates really enhance the historic nature of the property. Some of the rooms are small and they have the quirks of a place over 100 years old. But you can't beat it for character or views. The breakfasts are really good and there are fridges and a communal kitchen for guests if you don't want to eat in town. It backs to the Philmont property, but you aren't supposed to hike on it. There are plenty of hiking opportunities around Cimarron.
