Chaco is a beautiful place and we enjoyed the hiking, but our experience was ruined. We rented a group campsite for 2 nights with the minimum number of people I could do it with which was 10 (keep in mind the max number of people is 30 who can be in the group site). We have all camped many times (at different places) before and have had no problems and we are all respectful of the fact that we are near other campers and we keep our voices down and we don’t do anything crazy or loud. However, the way the group campsite is set up we are right next to individual sites and it is on a canyon wall so it makes it so all sounds are amplified like we are in an outdoor amphitheater. After a night there and half a day of hiking and coming back to the campsite to play games, have a few beers and relax (again, not rambunctious at all), 2 rangers and a cop show up and say we have to get out immediately because there was a few people that had complained about us being too loud. We had booked for another night and had no warning, and we felt like we weren’t being loud at all, it was the effect of the canyon wall that made it sound loud. They did not let us ask questions or anything they said we had to leave ASAP, we respectfully said ok but that we had been drinking and couldn’t drive yet- one of the rangers said it doesn’t matter we had to leave now (basically telling us to drink and drive, which is crazy). The cop was like no we cannot tell them to drink and drive. So the rangers said fine, but start packing and be gone within the next hour or so. So we had to leave. I later requested a refund for the next night since we couldn’t stay and was denied the refund.

The point being, I would not recommend this campsite at all, especially to anyone thinking about booking the group campsite, and to anyone who is sensitive to noise because sound carries. If someone had the max number that could be there of 30 people (or honestly any number) then I have no idea how they would not get kicked out too, even talking at a whisper the whole time. They should not have group sites available in an amphitheater where sound carries and right next to individual sites, it is just set up very poorly and designed for people to not be able to actually camp and enjoy themselves even trying to do so in a quiet respectful way.

To end this on a more positive note - the one night/half-day we were there was nice, the dark sky was great and we saw the Milky Way. The hiking was awesome, and it’s a...

The campsite is clean, has running water , flushing toilets, trash and recycle. If you use toilet paper, you better bring some. No cell service, a mile down the road at the cultural center guest wifi. We happened to be here when they had a star party at the cultural center where they had 20 large telescopes set up for viewing. THIS was incredible. The policy is quiet time and LIGHTS OUT at 10pm. This is for all of the amateur astronomers and astro-photographers that stay here. The only people that didn't go lights out or red light was some glamping company that brought people in and set up teepees for a couple days. I thought I's seen the milky way before but at Gallo it goes from horizon to horizon! The campsite it's self has little privacy between sites. Direct line of sight to our neighbor - probably 25 feet from picnic tables. The road: North road is rough only after the flood channel. A lot of people go slow on the washboard road and beat the crap out of themselves, but most vehicles can find a comfortable ride at a higher speed. For me this was 53 mph. I don't know if this applies to towing a camper but expect to see them going 3 mph. I was very concerned about the road and found it to be no big deal with a couple of serious ruts for...

Stayed 2 nights in February 2022. These were the nicest campground bathrooms I've seen. They were clean, heated, 3 stalls, and had hooks everywhere! I can't stand bathrooms that don't have sufficient hooks to hang your stuff. Anyway the heated bathrooms were a life saver as it got down to below freezing while we were there. The utility sink with hot/cold potable water was nice too. The hot water only got lukewarm, but it's miles better than ice cold water. The views at the campground were amazing, and the petroglyphs and pictographs at the campground were a bonus. The sites themselves were adequate, though close together. You won't have privacy or shade, and sound travels around the campground easily. But as a whole we loved our stay. Used our bikes to explore the whole park. The park itself is not very big and it was really pleasant to explore on our bikes versus a car. They had bike racks at each parking lot. We made it to Chaco Canyon in our 2wd mini van. There is less precipitation in the winter, so I assume the dirt roads are more easily maintained. If it was in the summer I would call the park ahead of time and ask which route is more accessible. Like others mentioned, the roads will get torn up with the...

Over all good. Its a campground with a platform for your tend, a fire pit, picnic table and a large aria for parking. So good but minimal. The bathrooms are good enough and the have potable water available which is important because it gets very, very hot. Which brings me to the only real challenge, finding shade. There is none so bring your own. If this doesn’t deter you, the site is right next to a Chacoen site and some of the best rock art in the park. This made the experience both unique and magical. The other best this is that every other camper I ran onto was very kind thoughtful and laid back. So many people went out of their way to make sure I had enough water and sunscreen. I was very sunburnt. But these people didn’t know me and were just kind enough to care. The staff are extremely welcoming and professional but the visitor center closes at 5pm NOT 7pm like the website says, so be ready. The camp site was full when I went and it put a lot of people in a bind because it is not easy to get to this park. So be prepared, plan ahead, bring shade and sunscreen stay hydrated and make the most of a minimal camping site in an awe inspiring location.

Gallo Campground in Chaco Canyon- My wife and I booked this online for one night. From the photos online I wasn't expecting much but left loving not only the park but this fun little campground as well. They have lots of sites for tents and RV's, a beautiful bathroom, ancient adobe runs on the premises and great little campsites with picnic tables and grills, we were very happy and comfortable. Make sure to go out at night and look at the stars, I have never seen them so close and so bright. The campsite is clean and quiet we have nothing but good to say. The park opens at 7am and is the best time for you photographers with that amazing light... Enjoy

So I'm going to give this campground a 1 star because the national park website is the most frustrating thing I've ever used. It says the campground is full when it isn't. You want another night? Too bad you need to make a reservation online and it's all full when 2/3rds of the tent sites are empty. Nobody to help. And the biggest issue is no shade. I've stayed at dispersed free sites with shade shelters. The park service can't erect some basic shade structures? Get real. Choco Culture is a wonderful place to visit. It's peaceful camping there. But someone's got to get the ball rolling with customer service.
