Very nice area, lots of trees and shade. Great for escaping Tucson heat. Elevation is about 6000 feet, so nice an cool at night. Camp sites are well set up with concrete picnic tables and each site has a bear proof box for food. The area has experienced forest fire in past so campfires must be dealt with care. There is no electricity and the out house toilet can get smelly (I put some water down it and kept the toilet seat down which helped a lot). No other amenities. Must bring in your own water but Safeway is 1/2 hours down the hill. There seems to be a funny activity that goes on late at night with motorcycles racing up/down the winding highway. The campsite is set off the road a couple of hundred yards but the still, dark air seems to amplify the motorcycles sounds. (The road is so winding and dark I was always nervous that I would hear one crashing over the cliff). This was the only unsettling break in the solitude. I did like it but be aware you need to be...
Read moreThis is a great little hidden gem of a camp ground. It is tucked in a side canyon nestled with Oak trees. When it rains, or when the winter snow melts, there is a creek bed that will fill with water. Beware because this area can also flood. There are also a few hiking trails from this location. Because it is in a side canyon, the sun will rise late and set early. There are no city views or vistas from this location. Many of the camp sites are close together so you will most likely not have a lot of privacy. There are vaulted toilets. I did not see any water...
Read moreWe got in a bit late, but that's not the campground's fault. It's lower on the mountain so it was warmer sleeping conditions than I prepared for, listening to the stream running was quite nice. Just wasn't impressed with the state of the vault toilet bathroom, I know it's a glorified outhouse but yeesh. Also the wasp swarm around the picnic area in the morning, and no I didn't have sweets out. At least they weren't Yellow Jackets as I could move things, but elected to leave because of my dogs. Would camp again in a...
