All in all its a decent place near Boulder to camp for free and is mostly easy to get to. There are 15 spots that, when we arrived on pre-Labor day Friday afternoon, were almost all taken, no surprise. We saw 1 spot available - site 12 I believe - that we could have taken but decided to kept going further to see what our other, more secluded options might be … The sites of the actual campground were far enough apart for visual privacy, but close enough not to offer audible privacy. We noticed~ 4 or 5 of the 15 spots had tents but no other sign of use like they might be abandoned ?!? (we wondered if these were 'placeholder' tents to guarantee someones spot if they leave and come back weeks/months later). We ended up getting a dispersed site outside the confines of the campground, and as others have noted - the road isn't as well maintained beyond the campground borders and not super conducive for low clearance vehicles. Lots of off road vehicles use the trails in/near Gordon Gulch but were still respectful of our space. We only stayed one night, but the view in the morning of the sunrise was gorgeous. Our spot was East of the intersection of 233.1 and 228.1B roads. There were several other folks camping dispersed through the woods… few were loud (one had a chainsaw) but most were very respectful and quiet. Bear country. Bring your...

We had a great time camping here! We got here a bit before regular camping season, so it was still pretty cold. Even so, just about every spot was filled up! Probably because it is one of the only places to camp before everything really opens up. We ended up in 2 different spots on two different nights. Both were nice but we did have to pick up a lot of trash that had been left behind. APOWYPI people. It was also pretty confusing to try to figure out which places were actually camping spots and we did accidentally camp somewhere we were not supposed to, but it worked out okay! There were some dangerous spots down the path a bit, too. We drove down towards camp 15 and there was an SUV that was up to the top of the tires in mud. Seemed like it maybe got caught in a mudslide? All the doors were opened and it had clearly been cleaned out. I think we saw a semi coming out of that area late the night before. We think they tried to get it out and had no luck. The trails in this area are really popular. In the mornings we saw a lot of 4 wheelers, motorcycles, jeeps, and other off-road vehicles going all over the place. It didn't bug us. We had fun and it was peaceful. We even got to make a trade with a mountain man, so...

Extremely bumpy, rough roads. 2WD can do it, but you have to go slow because of soooo many potholes. There was trash EVERYWHERE, and my friend and I had to spend an hour to just clear the traqsh from the campsite we were at. Needles, naloxone/narcan, used hygiene items (toilet paper and human feces) everywhere.

On the weekends, there is an IMMENSE nymber of loud, rude, unsafe 4-wheeler operators here. Motorcycles, dirt bikes, 4-wheelers, etc were speeding all over the mountainside here and making an extreme amount of noise. They were playing loud music, revving engines, etc. The wildlife was going crazy from them, and they weren't respectful of other campers AT ALL. Highly recommend going elsewhere/involving local law enforcement if you're looking for a safe...

Gordon Gulch is a quick drive from Boulder, near Nederland, CO and a place we like to disperse camp. Drive through Boulder Canyon is always lovely. Sites in the official ‘area’ are moderately sized and the higher numbered sites are more private. The road gets rougher leading back to the furthest sites and were pretty rutty/washed out the last time we were there (mid-late June 2022). Bear country - secure your smellies/food and cook away from where you sleep. Secure your dogs, moose country too. Keep an eye on local fire bans. Pack out what you pack in and leave no trace (or better than you found it - lately, there is a lot of trash at these sites :( don’t be that human!)

When I stayed there there was someone having a psychotic meth break furiously screaming profanities and threats at the top of his lungs for 30 minutes at 3am, until the police came. I don't know whether it was a frequent resident but there was at least one campsite set up with a generator and it was coming from that direction. Also I found a mysterious shallow grave right next to the site I was sleeping in, amongst all the rubbish left by previous campers. People were leaving in the dead of night to get away from this incredible meth hulk before he started taking his aggression out physically. Hopefully this is a one-off, but I wouldn't be game to go back.
