Buyer Beware! A couple of weeks ago we made reservations and stayed at the Hannagan Meadow Lodge in Arizona, we stayed in one of the individual cabins at a cost of $185.00 a night.

When we checked in we were advised that out pellet stove in the bedroom didn't work and we had to use a propane heater. We heard from other visitors that there were electrical problems everywhere in their rooms.

While we were expecting rustic what we got was DIRTY and VERY NEGLECTED!

We assumed everything would be old and of course being a cabin, very basic and I guess you could consider the bare spiral light bulbs in the ceiling rustic (???).

Simple things like missing electrical switch plates missing (they cost about 19 cents a piece at Home Depot)and an old piece of string to turn on the kitchen light implied neglect but the biggest problem was how dirty the place was. Old is okay, but there is no excuse for dirty especially at 185.00 a night.

First we found a huge mouse nest under the bathroom sink where the insulation was torn out and covered with droppings. It was clear this same bathroom had really not been cleaned as the toilet seat had brown splash spots all over it. We had to clean them off ourselves before we could use it. It wasn't hard to do but that raises the question of why it wasn't done in the first place before we arrived.

The sofa and chairs were nasty, covered with dried drips of various kinds to the degree that we felt uncomfortable sitting anywhere without first covering them with some extra sheets we found. There had also been something white splashed on the picture above the sofa that had just been left to dry and never cleaned.

When we took a couple of glasses from the kitchen to drink out of we had to go through them all to find a couple that looked like they hadn't been used and just stuck back up on the shelf.

All of the table surfaces including the nightstands had dried rings and various spills that had never been wiped up. Not stains but "stuff".

The one star is for the nice fireplace in our cabin (I think it was The Leopold?) the decent breakfast (we bought) in the lodge, the lovely setting in the woods, the front porch and the two nice people that are doing everything there... likely with little money provided by the owner/s to adequately care for the place.

We would have left that night but by the time we arrived traveling a very winding dark forest road and you're kinda out in the middle of nowhere by that time, so we had to stay.

My suggestion is to find another place to stay and visit Hannagan Meadow. You can find nicer places on the way to Alpine and in Alpine that are much nicer, offer so much more and are clean (most important to me) and half the price.

We ended up leaving and walking away from our 2nd night stay, asked for a partial refund for that night but never got a response.

I've never written an online review but felt compelled based on the misrepresentation from the website description and what we experienced. I only wish someone had done it before we made our...

Oh, Hannigan Meadow Lodge, how I love you so, and therefore, I must tell you that you can do better. I've come here many times, but the last had been several years ago. Much of the charm of the old lodge is still there, the stunning surroundings haven't changed, but it's a little run down. I feel that the owners have neglected the place and left the small, excellent staff to try to pick up the slack without the resources to do so.

We arrived not long after our estimated check in time to find the lobby dark, cold and deserted with no note of instructions. I called the number listed on the reservations (not the lodge no), but no one picked up, so I left a message (they called me back at 9 a.m. the following day). We waited about 45 minutes until another guest told us that the manager had to go to the store for supplies (45 minutes away), that she was turning over the whole lodge after a wedding on her own. I found out later that someone called in sick -- even still, it's more work than two can do in three hours. The other guest told us to just go into our cabin.

We stayed in cabin 26, which was quite large, and had 4 double beds. It was clean and had a wood stove on each side. It had apparently been adjoining rooms at one time. We were pleased with the cabin. It has a cute kitchen and everything you need (We did have to ask for dish soap.) We decided to only use the highway facing porch because the other one faced the barn and horse pen and smelled like it. The bathroom on the left side smelled mildewy, but the one on the right half was more modern, so we used that. Although we had planned to sleep in the back bedroom on the right half of the cabin, It also smelled really mildewy and was extremely unpleasant. It also seems to have a sloping floor. I suggest the owners take out the carpet and deal with the mildew and whatever else might be going on. So in the end we slept on the left hand side, and it was really great. We kept the door closed between the two sides at night and left the outside doors open during the day when the weather was nice. Unfortunately, in the middle of our stay, they decided to reseal the wood on the back porch, which made it impossible to keep the door open because of the strong fumes.

The lobby of the lodge is the only place you can get reception. It would go a long way toward keeping the cozy, charming vibe if they would actually heat and light the lobby during the day. This was the end of August when it gets pretty chilly at times.

The food in the restaurant was just OK, but that was amazing considering how few people managed to pull it off. Hats off to them. I really can't say enough good things about them. They were friendly, helpful and informative regarding trails and anything we wanted to know or do.

I will always come back because of my affection for the place and my hope that the owners will come through, but not...

Recently we were invited to stay the weekend with good friends who have a 2nd home in Show Low. We live in Mesa and had never visited the area while they had been coming to the area for 15 years. About a decade ago their daughter worked in Springerville (about 50 miles east of Show Low) and had camped at many of the areas. One of the things they wanted to do while hosting us is take a drive east and show us the area and have lunch at 'Hannagan Meadow Lodge'. They had not been there in several years (around 10) but raved about the great food and such. 'HML' is located about 50 miles or so east of Springerville and from Springerville its basically a two lane road with nothing but a scenic view of trees - keep in mind it's 9,000 ft. elevation. I had looked at the lodge website and so had a few expectations of this big rustic cabin type place, etc.

Upon arriving we ordered lunch which was a very limited menu. I will just state it here that overall the food was poor quality and way overprice for the portion served. Two of us ordered the fish and chips ($11) which was two relatively pieces of 'mushy' fish with a small handful of steak fries - no coleslaw, salad, etc. - it was pathetic. Being hungry I drowned mine in malt vinegar but my host couldn't eat his fish and asked for a cheeseburger. Owner or Manager did come out to ask and he showed her the fish. I had eaten all but half a piece but told her also it was not good. My wife ordered the wings and I ended up having a few of hers - they were ok. She had ordered a cup of soup which was roasted chicken (why no clam chowder on a Friday?) which she did not like. I ate it as I was hungry - not great and not a lot of stuff in it. Our friends ended up with cheeseburgers which were ok ($12) but were so disappointed in what this place was today versus how good it was years back.

Need to mention that there were numerous flies at the windows - some of them those big horseflies that occasionally made it over to our table. Again we are in the woods but perhaps they could better manage the flies inside the dining area. What lastly added insult to injury is the charged for the returned fish lunch. Rather than cause a scene we just left as I planned to write a less than positive review. So in summary this place was a 100 mile drive one way and poor food and service. Any of the 'ambiance' that is portrayed in the website is not there - at least for us. Overall very disappointing and I feel a '1' star review is appropriate.

Lastly, apparently you can rent cabin rooms and I assume if you're staying there then the dining area is the only place you can get food it would be a poor getaway vacation at best. We will certainly never return nor recommend. ...

What a lovely place! Isolated yet easy to access. We wanted a place where we could do a safe-feeling mini vacation during the pandemic. A rustic cabin with its own kitchen was perfect. We only had to wear masks when we were in vicinity of the lodge to ask questions or to pick up the Wi-Fi signal. We stayed in cabin 10, Riley, one that fits 3-4 people and is situated nearest the highway (which was quiet during our October stay). The kitchen has various pots, pans, utensils, plates, cups, even salt and pepper shakers. There were paper towels and a small Dawn bottle, too. There is a full size fridge, oven, and microwave. A gas grill and a BBQ mini grill were just outside. For heat, our room has a fireplace (wood and kindling is supplied) and gas heater in the living room, and a plug-in radiator in the bedroom; I'm a cold weather wimp after years in the Phoenix area, but I was perfectly comfortable in our room on the 35-40 degree nights. Don't expect hot water from the shower, though. The main bedroom has a queen-size bed with layers of blankets. The living room futon can fold out, and there is bedding supplied for it; that worked out well for our teenage son. There was also another fold-out bed that we didn't need to use. One thing I must note is that there’s a dearth of electrical outlets. If your family brings a lot of tech that needs to recharge, you would be wise to bring one or two plug splitters. This was not a big deal for us, we just took turns using outlets. I had to giggle about using my hair dryer (brought from home) while standing over the unplugged stove. Again, this place is isolated. We planned our meals and hauled in food, though there is a restaurant on site that is open for specific periods through the day. We never ate there. The nearest town for other victuals is Alpine, some 20 miles north, and it's a dot in the road. There are hiking trails right around the grounds. We did the Aker Lake Trail, a solid 3 hour trek of about 8 miles to and from the cabin. At night, there is some light pollution from the other buildings around the lodge, but the view of the sky is still spectacular compared to the Phoenix area.

We had a wonderful time when we went in the winter! We left from Tucson on a long ride to the lodge! The road over was smooth with nice views but was very winding. When we arrived at the lodge it was night out (~7:00). We entered the main lodge and signed in. Everyone else was waiting for dinner in the main lodge. We waited about 30m until they were ready. We were seated and then they took our orders. There was a salad bar too. Theres only 2 people cooking and ordering. When the food arrived it looked like a regular meal but when I took a bite it was some of the best food i’ve ever had hands down. The lodge was very cozy but roomy enough for my family. It had a full kitchen multiple heaters and 2 1/2 bathrooms. There was electricity. When I was getting ready to sleep (~11:00) there was a noise outside that sounded like a horse’s snort and sure enough there were 2 just standing outside our lodge. I tried to go back to bed but 1 of them was just staring at me through the window for nearly 30m which was pretty hilarious. Btw theres only wifi in the main lodge which stays open all night and a couple of the other 1s. Tldr: Long road, 10/10 food, Some wifi, electricity, very nice lodging, super nice staff Would definitely recommend going
