We were in the Moab area on a weekday a few days after Labor Day to go mountain biking at Dead Horse Point State Park. We assumed "high season" was over and had not made a reservation at the park; the state park was full and the ranger at the entrance station encouraged us to check out Horsethief Campground. I'm so glad we did! Our campsite was pleasant, with a lovely red rock outcrop by a little drainage, and a clean vault toilet across the way. The pinyon/juniper trees gave just enough privacy between campsites and it turned out to be my favorite campsite of a longish road trip. Blissfully quiet (no one was running a generator or partying). We were camping in our van, so no tent, but the tent area in our campsite looked level. We have a federal lands senior discount card, so the rate was around $7.50 -- quite reasonable, considering that a basic hotel room in Moab is around $90 a night. ||The road to the campground is gravel and there were some tanker trucks running on it periodically, so try to grab a campsite away from the road. ||Come prepared with water and food; it is about a 30 minute drive into Moab for either. ||Although we did not realize it at the time, there are mountain bike trails relatively close to...
Read moreMy husband and I have just spent four nights at this BLM campground in mid March of this year. We arrived about 10am on a week day and found quite a few sites to choose from. I suspect that especially between March-Sept., the campground fills up most nights. but quite a few people leave early in the morning and since you can't make reservations, arrive early to get a site.||The sites are large with lots of space between each of them. Each site has a space for a tent, picnic table, fire ring and space to park your car. We have a 17' travel trailer and it fit beautifully. There were a mixture of tents, trailers and large RV units in the campground. We were in site #11 in the lower loop (Appaloosa Loop?) away from the road and it was very quiet. The upper loop is closer to the road but it isn't a busy road so I can't imagine it would be noisy. The pit toilets were clean and conveniently placed. ||Although a bit of a drive to Arches NP and Moab (but still manageable) it was very convenient to explore Canyonlands NP and Dead Horse Point State Park. There is nice hiking and some bike trails at the campground. ||No showers and you need to bring your own water but if you just need a few nights it is totally worth it! And only...
Read moreAlmost perfect, a lot of the Sites that allow RVs and Trailers are too small. It's a very popular place due to its location to Arches NP and Canyon Lands NP. BLM camping access can be difficult with a medium to large camper. We were in a less popular BLM previously the sites were huge. I'm only saying this because it was the first time we had a issue getting our camper level because of how uneven the spot was , the auto level kept giving an error forcing me to hook up the 5R again and move it until I found a position it could deal with. I actually had to put blocks under the wheels and Leveling Jacks . Once that was over we enjoyed ourselves. Is it worth $20 a night? Maybe but there's no water, dump station or power here. So bring plenty of water without going over weight! Water weights a lot! As for a dump station there's a Gas station in Moab that has a dump station and potable water available. I never use the water at these stations because I've seen people use them to flush their black tanks when they should know better. It's not worth getting sick off another's...
