The positives: It is a campground, in the mountains, with a lake and a forest around it. Beautiful, amazing scenery. Direct access to the Colorado Trail, with great hiking opportunities. 15 minutes from downtown Silverton (I recommend trying the Golden Block Brewery for wood-fired pizza and home brews). Nightly fees are reasonable. Nice picnic tables and fire pits. Staff seemed friendly. The negatives: It sits right on Hwy 550, just below the Molas Pass summit. The noise is terrible. If you are looking for a quiet place to relax, this isn't it. Every semi truck that is either climbing to the top of the pass or coming down from the top is making a ridiculous amount of noise. But it isn't just the semi trucks, any pickup truck towing anything can make serious noise too. And if you happen to be there when there are a lot of motorcycles using the pass, the cycle pipe noise is deafening and down right annoying. Unless you enjoy the sound of loud traffic when you are in a beautiful mountain setting, this is place is not enjoyable. They don't allow generators in most of the sites, which I guess I could understand if they are trying to keep the place quiet, but there is no point in this since there is 100x more noise coming from the highway than my little generator would make! The sites can be very tight and a challenge to get into with a trailer if you happen to pick one that isn't perfect for your rig. So be aware of that. Most of the roads in there dead end with no turnaround area so be sure to do some recon before driving down any of them with a trailer. The place is laid out like a maze, so be ready to get lost. The pit toilets are very clean, so that is a positive, however they didn't put enough in so you might have to wait in line to use one. Campers are showing up all hours of the night, and then driving around trying to find their spots in the dark, and then...

Our family of 4 stayed here for a week in mid July. I can not accuratly express or say enough about our absolutely wonderful stay. We grew up, and go tent camping every year. Molas Lake not only checked all the boxes, but was above and beyond in many aspects. For instance, these were hands down the cleanest vault toilets we have seen and the tp was always stocked in excess. The views were amazing, the sites were roomy, the store was staffed and stocked with anything you could possibly need, we enjoyed fishing and renting kayaks... I could go on, but what you really need to know about, is about the camp hosts. THEY WERE THE ABSOLUTE BEST! They were friendly, funny, helpful and just the most wonderful ladies. They took time with each guest answering questions and giving directions. They told us about a beautiful waterfall trail right off the campsite, gave us a nature scavenger hunt and rewarded our kids honesty, shared excitement with my boys in treasures they found on the shore and made our stay a little more magical with 'unicorn poop'. (Campfire color packets). 10/10 would stay again.

For those wondering, we camped on the far side of the lake site P41 and were hoping to avoid the reviews of traffic noise. The site was fabulous but yes, we still heard the road. Really though, outside of the occassional honkers.. it was not terrible. It didn't take long for it to fade away drowned out by the beauty...

I would NEVER recommend this campsite to anyone. Overall my experience at this campground was ruined by the campground host who at first seems nice but truly had no regard for privacy as they snooped through our tents, along with requiring our entire campsite to move from our established site(while we had reserved sites for two weeks) to move during the midst of a torrential thunder and hail storm within an hour due to “complaints” which were unsupported and at our request to at least wait until our gear was drier and it wasn’t downpouring outside, we were threatened with the sheriff to come. As a campground host one should be understanding and have sufficient communication skills in order to address any issues that arise and clearly when faced with problem solving she resorts to child like behavior and power trips while going to the extreme and becoming irrational. No camper should have to endure this while PAYING for their sites. It was simply disrespectful and lacked any regard for human decency. Our tents, food, and gear were soaked and the new sites were not even tent rated, but rather a mud and gravel pit ment for RV’s. Go find an unhosted campsite near by. The amenities that are available at this campsite aren’t up to par with other campsites of similar caliber and the showers are $5 for 4minutes with times varying between each use and are also...

I've been traveling the world by bicycle for 14 years. Out of the 70 countries I've visited, the United States has been the least hospitable. There's no need to charge $28 and give an RV campsite to someone who arrives exhausted after climbing to Durango with all their belongings on a bicycle during a world tour! Be a bit more practical. There's so much open space. You could charge a nominal fee of $10 or offer hospitality to someone who's been cycling around the world for 14 years and not charge anything. But I guess this is something I won’t see at campsites in the United States; you're not the first, and I’m not surprised anymore. The lake view is beautiful, the campsites are spacious and clean, the restrooms are tidy, and the staff is friendly. They even came before dark to ask if everything was okay, or perhaps they felt bad for charging me $28 ☺️. The only downside to the area is the noise. If a truck is descending on the main road, the brake sounds can be disturbing. My suggestion: create a special campsite for cyclists and don't charge RV rates! If they're not using the shower and only staying for one night, don't charge at all! It would be a positive gesture for your business, and you'd become cyclist-friendly.

Beautiful setting for a campground. Wifi available at front office only. Giving 3 stars for the following reasons: -Mice made it into our Hyundai Santa Fe car every single night. The first night, they ate 1.5 sandwich sized bags of trail mix (except the raisins). We removed all food and set poison and traps in our car the next nights, and it was very apparent they somehow found a way in each night, and pooped all over it. -Some of the campsites are very close to each other, so while it might be great for group camping, we felt on top of our neighbor (specifically in site 24). -There was no toilet paper in the bathrooms "due to COVID" (because I'm definitely going to catch COVID from TP and not from the bathroom door handle.) They give you your own roll at the front office, but then you have to remember to take it with you each time you head to the bathroom. I don't think I'd come back because of the mice problem.
