I am the camp director for our ward’s girls camp summer of 2024. Reid Ranch was okay but overall we felt that for the amount of money we spent, we expected a higher quality stay. We wouldn’t come again.
The positives: -Our girls loved the activities; especially horseback riding, biking, lake time, and the ropes course. The mini golf was quite run down and home made but was still fun. -The Reid Ranch employees were all professional, fun and helpful. Everyone seemed happy to assist and were very kind. -Girls camp was so easy to plan because Reid Ranch took care of everything! So many activities, food, tents provided, etc. A camp director’s dream! -Beautiful scenery. The lake, mountains, sunsets, etc were pretty and peaceful.
The negatives: -Food was pretty awful. We didn’t have high expectations so we brought plenty of snacks. I’m grateful we did because half the food served each meal was suspicious looking with terrible textures and bad taste. We had several girls and leaders with upset stomachs, diarrhea, etc. by the end of our 3 days. -Prior to camp, I filled out the dietary restrictions for our group as required. We have 1 vegetarian girl and were told she would have non-meat options. Reid Ranch’s “vegetarian” option is just to not eat the meat. My poor vegetarian girl was left with 2 sides as her meal. Again, thankful for the snacks we brought. If Reid Ranch wants to know dietary restrictions, we need to be provided with better options. -We were promised our own campsite. When we arrived we were told we were sharing the campsite, fire pit, and pavilion with another group. We complained and we ended up having the campsite to ourself. I was grateful for them working with us there but was irritated we had to deal with it at all. -We stayed in tent city, campsite 1. We had 8 tents and some zippers were completely broken. We zipped it up to have it unzip behind the zipper. The remaining tents had semi functional zippers. They closed only after much difficulty. Reid Ranch safety pinned some tents so they would close. Other than the zippers the tents were great and held up well in the extremely windy conditions we had the first night. The zipper problem was a pretty big deal for us and we feel that if Reid Ranch is supplying tents, they should be functional. We would have paid less or brought or own tents had we known the conditions. -I wish scheduling would have been a little better. Because of our group size, we had to split into smaller groups for biking and horseback riding. We had no problem with that. However, we had several scheduled activities overlap. For example, we had 45 minutes of lake time that started while half our group was still biking. I would think it is possible to schedule groups without having this be a frequent problem. -Shirtless boys playing sports everywhere. Not exactly the environment we were hoping for our girls camp. I wish there could be a mandatory clothing rule, especially when church camps are up there constantly.
Overall we had fun and it wasn’t a negative experience to come to Reid Ranch, but it wasn’t a positive enough experience to come again or recommend. Just a little disappointed for how expensive this “all-inclusive...
Read moreIf you are looking for an all exclusive place- this is it! We had our Youth Conference here and it was a really great experience. I will break it down by item: LODGING: We stayed in the Tabby Mountain Lodge. We had the entire upstairs which included 4 bedrooms on each side and a gathering area in between. Each room had plenty of beds and their own bathroom which was so convenient. The rooms were nice and well kept, and spacious enough for everyone. Note: We attended in mid-June and the rooms do NOT have A/C, so it was pretty hot being on the top floor. The bedrooms had windows to create a vent but the gathering room was pretty toasty.
ACTIVITIES: There are plenty of things to do here between horseback riding to swimming to sports, and also a lake with a bunch of fun water activities. You can swim in the water, but it is not clean like the swimming pool. You do have scheduled times to do the activities, and because we were there for 2 1/2 days, we were able to do everything we wanted. The times are spaced out pretty big, so I would recommend having some "down time" activities such as cards or crafts because not everybody will be doing activities at the same time. There was a lot of hanging around in between meals and activities, so be aware of that. Most of the venues were nice, with the exception of the Miniature Golf course. It was quite dilapidated and needed major repairs.
FOOD: The food was the best cafeteria style food you can imagine. You were served your portions and there was plenty of variety when it came to sides. You can tell that it is all handmade and not super processed, and nothing too extreme for different appetites. They did a lot of repurposing things, like potatoes from dinner go into tomorrow's breakfast and so on. But of course everyone loved the soda machines and self serve ice cream.
LOCATION: It is remote, and my phone did not have service, though you could gain access with a local Wifi. It is pretty dry and shrubby, and it lends to that type of environment with limited grassy areas and lots of dust. But lots of trees and everything is well marked.
STAFF: A great highlight is the staff. They are fantastic. Haley was our host, and you can tell the pride she has being a part of the family business. She was extremely helpful and patient and made sure to call me by name, which I thought was a great personal touch. There are red shirts and green shirts which help you identify supervisors, and although most of them are youth and young adults, they are pleasant and helpful.
The part I really enjoyed is not having to worry about entertainment, food, lodging and all the other parts associated with taking 35 youth to an overnight outing. It allowed me to focus on other activities that we wanted them to have. I would definitely recommend them for...
Read moreLDS Young Women's Camp June 2022. We did not know our girls would be sharing a lodge with young men and thier leaders. We did not anticiapate shirtless young men everywhere during camp or them playing sports near us while we were trying to have a devotional--more than just a distraction,
The activities are really spread out time wise--for example, you do archery for 30 mins then have 2-3 hours before another activity. You will want to plan things for down times especially if your group is not interested in all the activities such as moutain biking which could leave a long break for some of the group.
We were there for 3 1/2 days--it felt like we could have fully done everything in 1 1/2 days.
There are activities, but not great for a large group doing things together. Our girls were seldom together, most often in little groups..not great for supervision or being inclusive to girls who might not have a friend group.
As for the physical camp: Ropes course--our girls said it was like a park play ground--not really adventurous. Mini golf--kinda run down... Boating--almost all the paddle boats were broken. Canoeing was fine. Horseback riding--most girls liked it. There is very little shade, wear a hat and be prepared for the heat! They need to build pavilions or plant more strategic trees.
Good things-- This camp is easy for leaders--you basically can just show up.
Food is prepared for you, but our girls said they would have rather cooked themselves. The food was fine--not amazing or bad, simply fine.
Staff--the staff is all very friendly and polite.
Overall, this is not a real adventure camp or a quiet serene camp, but it is easy for youth...
