South Mineral Campground — Hotel in Four Corners States

Our extended families have been camping at south mineral since 1962. We are from Florida and use it as our home base during our CO vacations. The scenery, clean air, and secluded back country lends itself to a peaceful, soul renewing time to get us through until the next year. Our two sons and their friends grew up here, doing their work on Boy Scout Merit Badges with the help of the Forest Service and the Profs and students from the CO School of Mines doing their summer field work in the area. They are grown now and have their own families and we still are coming after 52 years. Best time of summer to come is last weeks of June or early July, as the monsoon season sets in. Great campground for Boondocking a short distance to Silverton where you can pick up water and dump for $10 each. There have been moose spotted and a bear you have a small creek that runs through the south side of the campground if you were lucky you can back up to it. There is a vault toilet that they keep pumped out this year there has been a lot of people at through this area camping with tents and trailers about three times its normal. You can go walking through the woods and hiking up the sides of the mountain if you walk on the dirt road it may be dusty some people are courteous others are not about when they pass you. Beautiful campsite perfect if you’re looking for a place to camp that’s close to trails and has plenty of good drinking water, it also has bathrooms that are locked to all non campers so that is nice! My only complaint would be that the host was a bit over bearing, nothing against the guy it might just be his personality but none the less a great camp site but also a bit high if you’re trying camp on a budget at 40$ a night with no electricity hook up, or phone signal.. seemed a bit pricey for what you’re getting IMHO Would recommend but there’s also some great dispersed camping on the same road that are way better in my opinion.
