Obvious but worth emphasizing. This is NOT a hotel. You’re in a tent with a zipper door. There’s a toilet and shower which gets you into hotel room territory but there’s a few distinctions. The bathroom is “private” but not completely (i.e. partial “wall” with barn door separates you from the rest of the space) and the shower is a pull handle with just on and off, with temp going from cold to warm to hot intermittently. Theres bugs, it’s cold at night, etc. Despite its price-point, it’s way more a camping experience than a hotel experience which is why I suppose people stay at Under Canvas. And so did we.
It was a fantastic experience. Staff was very pleasant and helpful. The beds are super comfortable (definitely hotel quality). The indoor wood burning stove is really cool, although don’t think it’ll heat things up for long. It’s more fun than a heater. The food at the cafe is really good and reasonably priced. The outdoor area is very well done with great views and fun activities such as s’mores at night, corn hole, Bocce Ball and board games.
And then there’s the location. You are in the middle of nowhere. Literally. There are a few small towns close by and Ruby’s General Store about 15-20 min away has pretty much want you’d need. Lots of activities outside the park such as ATV/SXS, horse back riding and biking (we e-biked the park). You can book through Under Canvas or go your own way. The scenery is just breathtaking wherever you go. It’s a truly unique experience that will create lasting memories for sure.
Few things we discovered that’s worth mentioning. Being Bryce Canyon is so high up it gets chilly at night, even in august . So pack some extra warm PJs, you’ll need em (we stayed end of August and it got down to the high 40s low 50s late at night). if your shower gets cold (ours did after about 30-60 seconds) flush the toilet and boom. Hot water is back. At least in our tent. the sky is unbelievable at night. You can see the Milky Way with the naked eye. Bring a decent camera and learn how to photograph the night sky and you’ll have some amazing shots. I’ve never seen so many stars and I’ve been around the block we went white water rafting one day which was really cool. It’s an 75-90 minute drive north but you go through the mountains and it’s a very nice drive. Rapids were going being it’s rained a lot this season. we visited end of august and it rained every day for a short period of time. Bring rain jackets or ponchos if you go in the rainy season. We got caught SXS in a monsoon and the poncho and garbage bags we brought to protect our backpacks saved the day there’s a local “world class museum” in Bryce that’s actually really good. If you have an hour to kill check it out. All stuffed game animals and an amazing collection of bugs. There’s deer the kids can feed for a few bucks too food is not the greatest in the area, so the cafe came in handy. The town of Tropic and Panguitch, both about 30 minutes away, had some decent options if you’re looking to go out for dinner. But again, Under Canvas has a great onsite cafe with good food so it’s not necessary. getting to Bryce is a bit of a challenge. We flew into Vegas and spent a night before the journey east
The biggest pet-peev we had is unlike camping there’s no campfires by the tent which I really think is the biggest downside. Understandable considering the fire hazard it would pose but Camping for me is pretty much all about the campfire. There were gas fire pits at the main lobby area but it wasn’t the real thing.
All in all this was probably in the top 3 of any vacation experience with my 12-year old son and we will remember it for the ages. Highly...
Read moreFascinating, incredible, breathtaking, relaxing, reflecting, awe inspiring, tranquility, soothing! That’s not just referencing Bryce National Park, but Under Canvas Bryce Canyon compound in its entirety! This was our first time glamping, and I’ve got to say, not having to pitch your own tent, being able to stand upright in it, having your own shower, space to walk around in, toilet, seating, shower and sink, porch with chairs, with a real bed and not a sleeping bag makes for a great outdoor experience! Especially as you get older and you’re looking for the outdoor experience without the drudgery, inconveniences and potential painstaking process. The DarkSky environment is also conducive to serenity, peace of mind and relaxation with an unadulterated view of the stars that’s unimaginable until you experience it for yourself. Even more so, if you book the stargazing tent with an incredible clear canopy where when you rest your head on the pillow, looking up, and all you see are the galaxies in all its marvelous splendor, and then some! Here you don’t count sheep, count the stars. With the amenities of dining on premises (pretty darn good food by the way), fire pits and s’mores, live music, hiking paths, it all builds up to be a wonderful adventure. Just a few minutes from Bryce Canyon National Park, Bryce Canyon City and Tropic, UT, gives you a chance to gas up, eat up and wander around these small towns. You’re also a short distance from some of the most fantastic natural wonders Utah has to offer. Like Grand Staircase Escalante, Natural Bridge, Red Sands and more. All the amenities here are top notch, the concierge service is great, the service is fantastic, surprisingly fantastic meals and the staff are as excellent as you would find in any top-rated hotel. It’s a fantastic hotel in nature and under the stars! Two words of advice, be aware you are going to be at about 8,000 feet above sea level, breathing does become a little more difficult, especially for us older folk and we with heart conditions – be aware of your limitations. And, as you approach Under Canvass’ last few miles, watch for cattle, as all the area enroute to the site is free range, open grazing. That said, my wife and I had an extraordinary few days there, and we’re happy with the experience. We definitely got turned on to the glamping experience – thankyou Under Canvass, for an outstanding job and such a...
