We happened to choose a time when it was 104 degrees, things are a little different in those conditions, but Dave and Laura we incredible. They are the best camp hosts/owners. They care about your experience, from prior to check in until you leave. Our site was 311 and it was a perfect site. Had to level a little east to west, but not much. | First for the essentials: electric was great, consistent and not problems. Water was perfect. Sewer access was easy. We did need two hoses to reach. Next time, I will move the picnic table and pull further back on the site to capture some of the even shade a little quicker. There is a nice fire pit on site and a good deal of green space after the rocks. You are not right on top of other campers. Good deal. On Saturday, we did have a severe thunderstorm pop up for about an hour. Electric is go off of a minute, at the most. But came right back on and stayed on. | Bathrooms and showers are a combination. There are 4 unites and they are nice. Keep clean every day. Do not hesitate to use them. And they are air conditioned, so on 104 days, it was a good relief. | They do have WiFi for checking email, but with ATT we had no problem getting a signal. They also offer an out 25 channels of Cable TV. (St. Louis Stations). | The office has a little store as a part of it and there are some cute items to purchase at great prices. And they have the RV essentials should you find the need for an addition sewer hose or something. | Great amenities: We had three of our grandchildren with us and feed in the goats and chickens was a treat for them. They couldn’t to stop. | The pool was perfect for 104 days. True, put some blocks of ice in it and we would be happy…lol. But everyone using it were respectful and friendly. | Because of the severe storm we did not get to have the Duck Races or the Hay Ride. But our kiddo’s were definitely looking forward to it. |I really appreciate the fact that they offered a church service on Sunday morning. It was 30 minutes long and had great music and an incredible message by a local speaker. I wish more campgrounds would do this. |We did Elephant Rock State Park and Johnson’s Shut In State Park on Saturday. Do elephant rock first and it’s only 15 min. To Johnson’s Shut In. Both are free and both have a food truck set up on site. Getting Shaved Ice after Elephant Rocks was a treat. | Our friends have stayed here before, and they too have nothing but good things to say about...

Read moreWe completed the second half of our summer camping vacation at Big Creek and we had a wonderful time. The family that owns the park is so friendly, hardworking, and welcoming. They take the cleanliness, peace, and safety of their property very seriously. While I see that this has caused some disagreements in the past, their rules are not unreasonable and make the park more pleasant than your typical state-run facility. In fact, we had left Montauk to come here and kept remarking on how quiet and clean everything was in comparison. Montauk was dirty and absolutely run over with loose pets and kids on bikes during our stay. You will not find that at Big Creek.
About the park: We visited the creek and it was a perfect little spot to cool off and let our son catch tadpoles and crawdads, but the pool was my son’s favorite feature. It was on the smaller side but perfect for the kids to have their fun. Their bathrooms/showers were pristine and very spacious. The petting zoo was cute and the goats are always hungry so bring your quarters for snacks! Visiting the coffee shop on Saturday and Sunday was such a fun treat, Laura really knows how to make a delicious latte. And the night sky was unbelievable, bring your telescope!!
The area: Big Creek is very close to our favorite river spots and many other attractions, all within a 30 minute drive or so. You must bring your own supplies and food with you, there is just not a good place to shop nearby and that unfortunately comes with the territory (very rural). Those who are familiar with this region would know, but those from out of town might not expect the lack of resources. There is a Dollar General with cold groceries about 20 minutes away in Lesterville, and that’s it, so be prepared. There are some okay restaurants in Caledonia, which is a cute historic town to spend a day doing some antique shopping and browsing. Make sure to look up local river spots and plan a day on our gorgeous Missouri waterways! They are the best.
Unfortunately we left this trip early due to cancelled plans/thunderstorms, but I’m already looking at a return trip in September for the apple festival in Caledonia. We look forward to...
