We spent the weekend here recently with our 22' Minnie Winnie travel trailer. This is a small, woodsy campground best suited for tents, self-contained camper vans and small travel trailers like ours. Many of the sites could be challenging to get into, due to the trees on the sites. We were on #10, so we were parallel to the campground "road" but that was no big deal, since the place is so small and there is very little "traffic." The bath house is beautifully renovated and clean, the games that they have set up in the common area are fun and inviting, and the self-serve camp store is in the midst of being finished. It's a great idea, and shows the owners really care about each campers' experience. Being from Maine, we typically head out to the boonies to go camping, so since we were in the Freeport/Greater Portland area, we checked out some local breweries and biked the Eastern Rail Trail from Saco to Bug Island Light in South Portland. We enjoyed the full moon rising from the campsite at night, and visited the dunes in the evening as well. Kudos to the new owners- the place is really cute, from the landscaping, to the cafe patio at the visitor's center, to the welcoming bath house and self-serve camp store (coming soon!). *If you have questions about the size of the sites, a quick phone call is all that's needed. The staff is very helpful and kind. We'll be back!

I absolutely LOVE this campground!!! It is such a beautiful place with nice facilities and very thoughtful touches. My husband and I tent camped in site 2 for 2 nights while visiting Portland. It was a quick & easy 20-minute drive to downtown Portland. Even though we were there to visit the city for the first time, we spent a lot more time than we had planned at our campsite because it was just so lovely! The 24/7 camp store was stocked with firewood, fire starter kits, snacks, Maine blueberry soda, s’mores kits, and many other little things you may need while camping. The coffee and banana bread for sale in the morning were both top-notch — as good as you’d find in a coffee shop! The bath house was really nice and always clean. The signs throughout camp were hilarious & charming. My husband and I had a blast exploring the sand dunes after-hours! It was some of the best stargazing of our lives. We loved this campground as a young couple, but I bet it would be even better for a family with kids! We are from Minnesota, but we hope we can return someday!

Stayed here for 2 night and couldn’t have asked for a friendlier nicer place to stay. The campground is new and the bathrooms/showers are new and very well maintained. There are about 5 spots available for 20’+ RVs/travel trailers and about 20 spots for tent/ sleepers or vans. The spots all have water and electricity and it looks like individual sewage might be established soon. Also there is 5G internet available in your phone. The firewood is self serve and soon they will be offering snacks/ice cream and other amenities in a self serve station! The whole campsite smells like freshly cut cedar wood and at night there are fireflies. A very pleasant stay and I would love to come back and stay again. Highly recommend! Also their site to reserve a spot is very well made and easy to use.

There were quite a few things we liked and did not like about this campground. I completely understand that they are new and still adjusting, which is why I would go back and try it again.

-It was very easy to book online and I liked and that you could pre-pay for the firewood to be brought to your campsite prior to arrival (so convenient!). What I did not like about the booking process is that you are asked to pay an additional $10 to reserve the campsite you are choosing... isn't that the whole point of paying for the campsite? $55 is already up there for a campsite, I was not want to pay $65 so I took my chances. The campground was not busy so the site we requested is the site we got when we arrived. If there's a fee to secure the site you want, it should just be included in the reservation price... -Check-in was online and very easy -The bathrooms here are GREAT. They are CLEAN and very nice, they are probably the nicest bathrooms I've ever seen at a campground. -Our campsite (#5) was small. Sites 4-11 are quite small - enough for just one tent and one car. The picnic tables are about half the size of a normal table. If you are going with more than 2 adults, I would book one of the other sites. I enjoyed our site but for $55 (or $65), I'd expect a bit more. -The main path of the campground is lit up dimly at night which I really liked. However, the lights are motion activated so if someone walks down the path at night these lights get VERY bright - like headlights in your campsite bright. I wish they stayed dimly lit the entire time, it's more than enough light to see where you're going. -They have a café which I was looking forward to in the morning but the location was not labeled at all. We went over the the Welcome Area (which was closed Sunday at 8:30) and did not see any signs of anything being open. As a side note: I don't check my email when I am camping but they did send us an email sometime during our stay to explain where the café was (it's on the back side towards the playground). It would be nice if there were signs on the premises because it did not look like anything was open and we left to get breakfast. -This campground is dog friendly! We brought our two dogs with us and they had a great time. However, other people also brought dogs that were not well behaved. There was one site with a dog that was INCESSANTLY barking the entire duration of our stay. There was no one around to enforce the "well-behaved dog" policy so it really ruined the relaxing trip we'd hoped for. You could tell other people were quite frustrated with this as well.

Overall, I would go back. They are new and still getting the hang of things. The sites were clean, the bathrooms were nice, and the campground was overall quiet except for the obnoxious Australian Shepherd. It's nice that they have coffee and muffins in the morning even though we missed out. I can see this place doing very well and would definitely give it another chance.

Edit: I am changing my review to 5 stars to reflect what awesome customer service this campground has. If you're not happy with something, let them know and they will make...

What an absolutely delightful, magical, and whimsical adventure and stay we had at the Desert of Maine Campground. This is a beautiful glamping experience that has so much charm and care in all the small details - really really clear how much the team cares and it feels too that they had a lot of fun in setting up the campground and spaces. We stayed in a stunning and cozy A-frame - going to sleep looking up at the stars and waking up with the tree canopy overhead. The room was beautiful, cozy, and had all the essential amenities so thoughtfully laid out: fridge, kettle, coffee maker, wine opener, etc :) There is a little fire pit right next to our place which we built a fire in and ate pizza & s'mores over and told stories late into the night. I absolutely loved the little camp cafe that had all the essentials and was both so thoughtful and made me smile - little s'more packets with the perfect amount of everything, matches, wood, and s'more sticks. Milk, local sodas, ice cream - all perfect! The shared bathrooms are so clean. While the camp ground has I believe bout 30+ tents, it is set up in such a way where you still feel you have your own cozy spot in the woods. We headed up to play a very fun and silly game of mini golf at night which made for lots of laughs, and then we got to explore the desert of Maine in the morning! I also just loved all the quirky signs everywhere that gave instructions to different parts of the campground but in a way that was so whimsical and made you smile. Overall we had an absolutely wonderful time and are already planning when we can return - just us and also to...
