Subject: Caledonia Farm - 1812 B&B||Location: Flint Hill, Rappahannock County, Virginia, United States, North America||Title: Mixed Bag||ID#: 488184832||||My husband stayed here for three nights, located in Flint Hill, VA, population 85.||||Pros: Picturesque, bucolic setting on 300+ acres of rolling meadows with black angus, ducks, bluebirds and other bird life. Within 12 miles of Skyline Drive and Luray Caverns and close to the Inn at Little Washington. ||||The price seemed reasonable for the area and our indoor space was air conditioned.||||Our accommodations were very clean.||||Our host was eager to make dinner reservations although none were needed (slow season). We did enjoy his recommendation for the Thornton River Grille.||||Phil, the proprietor, an old railroad enthusiast, originally from NY State's claim to fame is to have visited over 300 B&Bs and is an active part of the national association.||||Cons: We were assigned the attached, separate stone house, very historic with private entrance. The couch furnishings were "tired". It included a micro and little refrig, but no plasticware. One set of towels for each of us, frayed at the ends. Thin, polyester sheets and "weary" pillows. A room inside the home would have been preferred because the entrance to our "cottage" passed by huge boxwood shrubs with a gagging scent of cat urine (outside cat).||||Wi-fi was extremely limited.||||There were fishing poles but, unless you know in advance to bring flies, not an option.||||There are two bikes, but they haven't been ridden in a long time; the tires look rotted.||||Breakfast found us in a hot little corner (but with a lovely view). Phil learned a lot from visiting other B&Bs. Our breakfast was garnished with a half strawberry and a paper thin slice of kiwi. My omelette was burned, the coffee was strong (instant?). Second morning I requested to skip the eggs and asked for two slices of cantaloupe instead of one. I was told there was no more.||||For me, I prefer spending my money with someone whose politics...
Read moreOutstanding views and very historic. There is plenty to do in the area, and Phil was just phenomenal. He keeps up-to-date about events going on in the area, and where all the best places to eat are. He is very knowledgeable about the area and so can is able to make suggestions on where to go and what to do if you keep him informed of your plans. He is very keen to make your stay as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. He also makes the very best breakfast!
Now keep in mind that this is not a modern hotel. The beds are comfortable, but not as plush as you would expect a modern bed. This is a HISTORIC B&B, and so it should be expected that the furnishings will match with that theme. This is coming from a city girl who likes her modern comforts, but doesn't mind "roughing it" either.
All in all, visit here with an open mind and an open heart. If you are going to arrive with an entitled mentality, just stay at home because this gem of a place is not for you. If you don't mind trading some of your modern comforts for a chance to experience a piece of history (and the best darnedest breakfast you will ever have!), then Caledonia Farm is the Bed &...
Read moreInnkeeper 1812 property was a unique step back in time with Virginia’s oldest property continuously run as an inn. Phil, your extra ordinary host, will regale you with great heritage of Rappahannock County and environs. Beautifully maintained and kept property complete with beautiful stone walls, cattle grazing, pastures and mountain ridges galore. From the welcomed orange drink telling of the house rules to the proper guest room in the summer kitchen where up to 8 farm hands (aka slaves) slept indeed is like you traveled back to yesteryear. ||Dining on the hand made triangle wood table in front of a picture windows overlooking the dinner bell, fields and outdoor black cat, one is treated to a candle lit breakfast with pewter serving pieces. Don’t you dare be a minute late for the scrumptious breakfast or you will have the dinner bell rung!!! The crepe omelet with American cheese and true Virginia country ham, Toasted English muffin, berry jam and conifer garnish with non-alcoholic cider was the proper start to a rainy mountain day. ||Thank you for the Virginia hospitality Phil. A very memorable and enjoyable overnight visit to be...
