Ugh… where do I even begin… We booked a week stay at Swan Lake’s “Paradise House” vacation rental at the end of June. Luckily the point of our stay was not relaxation at a “resort”, we were forced to be in town for other reasons. Highly disappointed to find the cleanliness of this place to be about a 2 on a 10 point scale. One of the most important things when staying away from home (for me) is knowing a place was cleaned well before you arrived. The toilet was dirty (had to go buy toilet brush and cleaner to clean it myself), there were crumbs and dirt all over the floor (nothing in house to clean it up with ourselves), the trash can looked like the lid hadn’t been wiped down in who knows how long (I wiped it down myself) the counter had sticky spots on it (I cleaned it myself) Our feet were turning black, and at first we couldn’t figure out why, turns out the floor was that dirty it was making our feet black (nothing we could do to clean it and wasn’t going to take the time or effort to do so, this is not our job). After finding the place in this condition we decided sleeping on top of the covers with our own blankets, was our only option. There were no paper towels, or laundry detergent (this was not mentioned in description). There was an apparent wasp nest, where one of the swinging chairs was hanging from. The outside porch lights had some sort of nests pushing them out of the porch ceiling. This place is dog friendly but there is barely any grass (without walking a distance) to take your dog(s) potty. A bunch of tall weeds, an old grill, old table, charcoal bags and other misc items are strewn around in front of the porch and will be your view, with the lake beyond that. The description on this place makes it seem like you’re going to some dream destination, and it was worded so well it could convince anyone this is where they wanted to stay on vacation - don’t fall victim to the very inaccurate website description, like we did. It was far from the fairytale it was made out to be. We were going to try to go kayaking, but when my boyfriend went to go look for the “toy shed”, he opened the shed and couldn’t even walk inside there was that much stuff just laying around and the only Kayak he saw by the lake had old stagnant water laying in it, so no kayaking for us. This place is just not kept well at all. I mentioned the cleanliness issue to the lady who runs the rentals and all I got back was excuses, and was eventually offered a whopping $30 refund on an over $800, 4 night stay. We will not be returning to Swan Lake. I am really not sure how this place has good reviews…. Wanted to share our experience because had we known what we know now, we would have never...

SYSTEMATIC AGE DISCRIMINATION: As a 23-year-old professional who regularly conducts business with executives aged 40-70, I immediately recognized the discriminatory treatment upon arrival. Staff exhibited clear prejudicial behavior, refusing standard greeting protocols extended to older guests while deploying strategic social isolation tactics. This establishment maintains a vertically integrated discrimination architecture that renders younger guests disadvantaged from moment of entry.
CRITICAL LIABILITY HAZARD: Their ceramic dishware failed catastrophically within 3 minutes of normal microwave use - well within standard operational parameters. This represents an active insurance liability with potential for severe injury claims. The plate explosion created debris fields that could have caused lap-impact injuries warranting substantial compensation. Management's procurement of substandard materials creates dangerous conditions for all guests.
MANAGEMENT DISHONESTY: After extensive negotiations regarding their equipment failure, we reached mutual agreement: no payment required for their defective plate, 5-star review in exchange for damage waiver, acknowledging food residue as cleanable matter. However, Swan Lake Resort ownership violated this negotiated settlement, proving systematically dishonest while demonstrating active age-based discrimination.
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH VIOLATIONS: Active smoke odor permeated the unit upon entry. Management falsely attributed this to guest activities while maintaining barbecue facilities throughout the property with persistent smoking activities. This creates non-family-friendly conditions with deliberate misrepresentation of contamination sources.
WARNING: Avoid Swan Lake Resort - discrimination protocols activate immediately. Substandard equipment creates active insurance hazards. Persistent smoke contamination affects all units. Management violates basic contractual integrity standards.
This facility fails basic hospitality standards through discriminatory practices, hazardous conditions, and...
Read moreThis was such a great little find. We booked this thru VRBO months before Covid19. We are only an hour away but we were very glad that we were still to have this getaway with everything going on. It was a little peice of heaven for a week. Joy responsed quickly with any questions. I have used VRBO before and usually I am dealing with a home owner that is just renting it out a few weeks for extra income. That is what I assumed it was. But it is an old camping ground that they are converting into a a gated community that you can purchase mobile homes and use 4seasons. It was a quiet community, not too busy. Everything was very well maintained. We were off the road so no traffic noise. Our place was the LakeHouse and it was on the lake. We could have put boat right in water. Our deck was perfect when it was cooler to just sit and watch the birds...lots of swans. We we arrived alexa was playing jazz music and the ac was on to make it so welcoming from heat! It was clean and comfortable and plenty of room for 2 or even 4 people if ou use the softbed. We were close enought to things like OC and Smithville yet come back to a peaceful little place. (we have 3 very loud boys at home so maybe why quiet is so nice, haha) They left a whole notebook of info, menus, tips, map of grounds and what is avaiable to use. Joy was wonderful. We had an issue with the internet and cable all week. She tried so hard to make it right, even ordered and replaced router...then to find out it was comcast not equipment. She even left us a bottle of wine for our trouble! It was inconvient but really not that big a deal in the end. This would also be a beautiful place to come in the fall. We probably would have canoed more if it wasnt so so hot. I highly recommend...
