My Name is RHONDA BINDERT. I just stayed in room 102 for three nights. please take note that I have stayed there for the past 6 yrs durning various occasions mainly for Pheasant opening.
I know last year it became under new management and it shows that it is very poorly managed compared to the past years. last year we thought it was the newness to the new mgmt. but this year solidfied that they know nothing about running a hotel.
I had originally made a reservation for 3 rooms. the evening before we set out for our hunting trip we found out that the third room would not be used. I called and canceled it... upon arrival there was no one at the front desk, but our cards and registration were waiting for us, with my credit card info on the magnetic strip. with a note indicating that the third room could not be cancelled because of the policy ( 14 DAYS) 2(WEEKS). I wrote back that we can't always know what is going to happen two weeks in advance and the usual cancelation is 24 HOURS not two weeks.
Every morning and every evening I looked for someone to assist me, NOT ONLY WAS NO ONE THERE, THE THIRD ROOM KEY CARD SAT ON THE DESK WITH MY PERSONAL INFORMATION ON IT... never attended to.
Not once did our room get attention, not once was there someone at the front desk, not once did the continental breakfast area get stocked. Gary SD is a small quaint town, the old blind school is charming and used to be inviting, but when you charge 150.00 a night for a room in a hotel out in the middle of no where in OCTOBER and there are no other guests are to be seen or heard and get NO SERVICE. its under very poor management.
Bar closed early and restaurant was not open, it certainly was not worth even the old rate that we use to pay, and that rate was fitting for the area and time of year.
Will not stay there again until mgt changes and I will not recommend to anyone......
so sad to see a what was once a wonderful place fall...
Read moreThis facility was originally the South Dakota School for the Blind, built in the early 1900's. At one point the site was totally abandoned and in extreme disrepair, but it has been beautifully restored into a pleasant and quiet hotel, business center, bar and grille and campground. We were in town for a family reunion and made our reservations late, so there were no regular rooms available, but we were able to get a 'sleeping room' in the Family Suite. This area had several sleeping rooms that shared a bathroom, kitchen, living area and private patio. Despite sharing it with people we did not know, it worked out very well, and we never had any issues with bathroom usage or anything else.||||I travel quite a bit for my work, and I've stayed in many hotels, but this was hands down the most quiet room I've ever stayed in. We enjoyed the use of the east facing patio in the evening, and especially the following morning, taking our coffee there in the morning sun. I would think that a stay here in the fall, enjoying a crisp morning on the patio would be excellent!||||The Rock Room bar and grille is open and we enjoyed dinner there one evening, with pleasant results. Camping here would be wonderful as well, nice and quiet. There is also a creek and pond on the property.||||All in all, I believe that staying here for a weekend would be great if you have other things to do in the area or if you are just looking for some serenity and relaxation during your stay. If you like scenic drives, ask for directions to the county road that goes NORTH out of town along the Buffalo Ridge. It is a short scenic drive, but some of the views...
Read moreCame across the state to come to a nieces wedding and didn’t even know where Gary, South Dakota was. Did some research and found out a little more.....ok looks interesting. Upon arrival we were totally taken back. The tow of Gary itself is such a NICE CLEAN little town. Seeing the Resort Campus with its manicured lawn and Majestic Oak trees and sprawling campground.....speechless to say the least. We brought our camper and the grounds are top notch. Level spots, spacious, great consideration for hook up spots. Easy in and out!! Campground is 5 Star. There rest of the grounds and buildings have a historic background. This town was the county seat at one time and it had the State School for the Blind. This is where the Resort and campground are on. You will want to stroll around and explore. The buildings with pictures showing life in the late 1800s and later. I’ll leave the rest for you to find out when you visit. Host and staff were outstanding!!! Always willing and able to answer questions about your needs or about the history of the Resort and it’s previous life. Enjoy the wonderful trees, flowers and grounds in your exploring. This is truly an unexplored and undiscovered gem.....at least for us. Everyone who came to the wedding were taken back by its beauty...
