From our first conversation with Rob & Heather, and their recommendations, & feedback! This family made this weekend 5 stars easily. We were lucky enough to be there for the Halloween party, live music, food truck, cornhole & smiles with the youngest daughter. Kids in their costumes, leaves in full color! Kal haven trail attached to the outpost. 39 miles of biking, hiking, outstanding colors this time of year. Wild turkeys. The campground itself is laid out beautifully! Surrounded by woods, paths cut throughout the tall grasses, to explore within the grounds itself. The bathhouse has many amenities, family showering, utilized both while we were there. The facilities were always clean. Ceramic heater in the bathroom, in case you're cold. The outpost store has a little of everything, from A-Z if you had forgotten anything. We went glamping in one of their tents for the first time. Tucked in the woods, seating provided by the fire ring, propane grill, indoor wood fire stove. (FYI! The first night was up feeding the fire, and too hot. Second night we vented the half moons on the side of tents. Fresh air coming in, and heat from stove made it much more comfortable to sleep. So do yourself a favor, use the vents to allow fresh cold air in.) the tent was equipped with a very soft King size bed, lights on both sides with night stands. Coat rack to hang clothes, two big ottomans to sit on, a tweed rug on bottom of floor. Dresser to put your clothes away. And a power battery box that powers 4usb 1c charger, cigarette plug in, and 2 actual plug ins which we utilized the fan that was in the tent all night we charged one e bike battery as well. This is a must own, if you're a rustic camper. We did however have to switch out boxes for next day. Rob took care of us! The glamping comes with bed linens, towels, & wash rags. Also a cooler with ice packs. Two Thumbs up! Wood for fire and stove are included in your glamping cost, another two Thumbs up! Ice is also provided! When exiting trails go left to get to downtown South Haven, about 5.5 miles. If you go right it will take you to Kalamazoo! The trail this time of the year is so beautiful, and we came across a bunch of wild turkeys. We will definitely utilize Rob & Heather's piece of paradise again, in the near future. Also cabins available, would be to go as a group, they are all situated side by side on a circle. I myself, will definitely utilize the glamping tents again. Lots of privacy, in the woods. Thank you all for such a...
Read more(Read whole review for pros and cons). The stay here was ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL. It is just nice to see someone so passionate about their work, and both talking with Robert and seeing him, the owner, cleaning the washhouse and campsites everyday showed us the passion. Plus just talking with him you could tell he loves it. That makes me trust this place even more. My mom and I both loved staying in the cabin. We felt like it both took care of our needs but also gave like a camping experience. Perfect place to book for South Haven blueberry festival.
Pros: most everything. Set at 72 the AC unit almost made it kind of cold, so it did great work. Fridge and microwave worked great, bed was comfortable. Sofa was super comfortable, and after first night of doing the pull out portion, I slept on actual sofa part the rest of the time (personal preference, sleeping against a sofa back feels like a cocoon). Outside: Picnic bench was great, chairs and table on deck was great, fire pit was excellent.
Cons: if you have a weak bladder, take measures to work with that, as the bathhouse is a 30 second drive or 2 minute walk. They pride themselves on keeping everything super clean, so I understand their reasoning to not having porta pot, but makes it extremely tough if you are a person that suddenly needs to get up and go to bathroom in middle of night like my mom.
Tips: Bug spray and citronella candles. Lots of each.
Buy firewood (3 bundles for $12) and firestarters (25 cents) from them at the outpost. The firestarters were brilliant.
Bumbleberry Acres is literally a country block away. Go pick blueberries.
No signal at cabins, rest by your fire pit with the Next Radio to listen to music. Have to go up to washhouse to be in 1 bar LTE range.
Scott, Robert, Heather and the whole crew are awesome. I am rooting for them to succeed....
Read moreHighly recommend renting space at Kal-Haven Outpost for a wedding! We reserved half of the campsite for our August wedding. The reservation included 10 cabins (sleeps about 44 people) and the group tent site area, which is a secluded space in the woods behind the cabins. We rented all that space for the entire weekend. The price we paid matched what I was getting quoted from standard wedding reception vendors in the area, with the added benefit of having guests sleep over plus having the space for an entire weekend.
Robert and Heather were great to work with all throughout the process. They responded timely to calls and emails and scheduled multiple tours for my parents and wedding party to see the space ahead of time. We rented a tent to put in the area by the cabins and were able to fit a guest count of 80 under the tent, with plenty of space left over for catering dinner and dessert. We were also able to use I believe 14 of the campsite's picnic tables for the event, so we didn't have to pay to rent tables from another vendor. The campsite also arranged the picnic tables under the tent to our specifications, and it was set up perfectly. Robert and Heather took a personal interest in our wedding by gifting us a bottle of wine the night before our wedding, and sending us a little gift package afterwards.
My guests were blown away by the wedding, and some guests loved this place so much they immediately booked their own visit. The campsite is beautiful and allowed for great wedding photos. The cabins are also very cozy. Robert made multiple rounds throughout the weekend to take out trash and keep the area clean. Last but not least, hosting our wedding here allowed us to include our dogs. The campsite has an amazing dog park...
