I wanted to leave as soon as I arrived. Picked this campground because reviews seemed good, pictures looked nice, website seemed good. Rolling up to the office, I said "this doesn't look how I thought it was going to look". The office receptionist was very nice but the office was a dark mess of years and years of clutter and smelled like someone used to smoke in there. The first thing I was told is that "I had to move you" ... Didn't ever find out exactly why but I was feeling a little overwhelmed in the moment. She waffled about giving me a spot that was more "private" or one that was "water view". ? I think I reserved one that was described as "flat" and in an area with wifi service (did I imagine this?) because I opted to pay a little extra for those 2 features.
Okay uh I guess I'll take the private one. So we go over there and it's a mess. The site was not actually all that flat (she was concerned about that for us) and it was like an instant mosquito attack because of the deep woods. I'm also going to guess there was a lot of standing water in the big pile of junk and debris on the site across from us, or maybe the overflowing trash can at the top of the hill. We went back to the office and asked about something else, and she said the last one she had was over here etc. ok let's check it out. It was moderately flat and much more open so that seemed better. Okay fine it's settled.
Something about the land there makes everything perpetually moist. There is no gravel left on the roads and everything was muddy. I went to take a shower and my husband asked me "how was it?" "Like showering at a gas station" I replied. But like the kind of gas station where you have to ask for the key and the bathroom is around the side. No floor drain out side the shower, no mats, no shower curtain, just a wet and muddy wood floor. Women's bathroom was okay, but I did use the men's on the morning because there was a line and it matched the shower in terms of its gas station bathroom cleanliness and aesthetic. The water from the spigot had a brown tinge to it, and clearly an animal had overturned a full trashcan in the night. A bunch of plastic trash cans with no lids is just asking for raccoons and possums to get in them.
Why do people love this place? I mean, the trees and moss are truly lovely, but I paid the same amount at a MUCH nicer Oceanside campground in Maine. Maybe it's for you but it's not for me! Do...
Read moreThis review is more for dog-owners as we pretty much plan our trips around our dog.
We stayed at one of the cabins (200) for several days. First, the "cabin" was beautiful. It's essentially a tiny-house. It has pretty much everything you would need except sheets/towels (they will provide for a fee) & also bring coffee! There is a full gas oven, fridge, microwave, etc. Pots/Pans. Full bathroom. It also has a cute deck you can sit out on with a nice view of the bay in the distance.
The campground itself is beautiful. Everyone was super nice, the owners were fantastic. You have a lot of privacy. Cabin has a fire pit & grill, as do all of the sites.
The owners have an adorable Poodle that our dog fell in love with. Lots of other doggies around. If you bring a longer leash, you can hook it up to the deck or grill and your dog will have space to lay in the grass and on the deck.
The campground is within 10 minutes of a Wharf with delicious Lobster Rolls (Five Islands). Also, it's close enough (20 minutes) to Bath, Maine which has groceries and everything else you'd want. We drove into Bath multiple times during the trip.
If you have a dog, there is a dog park called South End Park close by. It's big, right on the river and had a great group of dogs there. Lots of hiking all over but make sure to look into where you can hike with dogs, a lot of places don't allow them even on-leash. But there are plenty that do.
The absolute best part of the trip was that when the tide goes out....the entire Sagadahoc Bay dries up and is like a sandy beach. You can walk a mile out, it's one of the coolest things we've ever experienced. We were able to let our dog off-leash and she was having the time of her life.
Oh and go to Reid State Park - you can't have dogs on the beach in-season but they have it set up so trails run down the whole beach so you can see the waves & walk up on the rocks w/ your pup. Just not on the actual beach which was fine.
We also went to Fort Pompom which allows dogs outside of the Fort - we saw probably a dozen seals swimming in the water over there. Beautiful area.
Overall, it was an extremely relaxing trip - our dog loved it & so did we. The accommodations were perfect and the campground was beautiful. We would absolutely stay...
Read moreAfter looking at the other reviews you can tell a lot about the owners and management of this campground. If you express your honest opinion and it isn’t a 5 star review, rather than be apologetic or try and fix it, the owner bashes you and calls you names. The views are pretty, they have that going for them, which is why we tried to stay here in the first place. But they are rude, provide nothing and are ridiculously over priced. The woman in the office, now I’m realizing is probably the owner, was dismissive and acted like she didn't want to be there. We had a lot of questions never being to the area before and she acted annoyed by them. When we felt like she wasn't receptive to us we asked if she rather us just leave and lose a customer, she said "yes". We left. This place is a joke.
Edited: Dear owner, please review all of your negetive comments, they say the same things. Your site isn’t maintained, over priced and YOU are rude. You can’t even demonstrate class when commenting on reviews. You engage in bullying tactics and it’s poor business. It’s funny that with a young person you could build a client for life and most business owners would see that. We most certainly aren’t 10 and have traveled most of the country camping and plan to continue that, and, while I’m sure you’ll respond with “we aren’t welcome there anyway”, just like you have to anyone who’s left you a negative review, good, because I’d never step foot or drive my car onto your campsite ever again.
As to your comment on leaving a review without staying, I visited your establishment and left, something in open about in my review. We left because of your treatment to your guests and the initial impression of your site. Not worth our money or energy but I would love to use my energy to save someone the trouble of trying to give you business when you don’t deserve it and they would have a better time and save money by...
