Super warm and inviting hospitality + Fantastic Japanese washoku meals + Impressive and clean hot spring bath + Traditional and comfortable tatami rooms + Only 2 rooms and both reasonably priced = Great Value, Must Go.||||As a foodie family of three, we enjoy experiencing the Japanese culture and its broad variety of cuisines. Unfortunately this is very hard to do in the States, except for in Manhattan, which is usually where we get our fix. Not anymore. ||||Hands down we thought the Japanese dinner served at O gawa shou was better than a meal we had recently at the one Michelin starred Kyo-ya. To be fair, that is a bit of comparing apples to oranges (or washoku to kaiseki in this case), but the overall satisfaction level was undoubtedly higher for all three of us at O gawa shou. Equally delicious was the Japanese breakfast we had. Reminded us of some of the best experiences we had during our last visit to Tokyo. If we could have Yumi's cooking every day, we absolutely would. ||||Aside from the meals, another highlight of our visit was O gawa shou's hot spring bath, which sources natural spring water from the mountains. We were in Beppu (Japan's hot spring town) last year visiting several public and private hot spring bath halls, and we can tell a lot of effort was put to design and construct O gawa shou's authentic-looking hot spring bath. Hot spring bath cleanliness is also a big thing for our family, and O gawa shou certainly did not disappoint.||||Last but certainly not least, we thought the service was impeccable as well. From greeting us when we parked to the goodbyes upon our departure, we felt warmly welcomed. Glen and Yumi demonstrated Japanese style hospitality at its best - courteous, sincere and warm, but also never intrusive. Their attention to details is also something we noticed and very much appreciated, everything from the rooms to the dinnerware, from meal presentation to cleanliness of the public bath area, etc.||||A heartfelt thank you to Glen and Yumi for bringing all of this to the North East. Now we can enjoy authentic Japanese hospitality and cuisine without needing to fly 14+ hours to Narita. Words cannot describe how fortunate we feel to have found this place, and we are already looking forward to our next visit to O gawa shou...

Read moreDespite thinking of how great this trip was so very, very often since we visited this summer, I'm only now getting to writing a review. Just don't know where to start, but I'll try with the food. ||||I've been to Japan, and we had just days earlier tried a super expensive kaseke meal in NYC. This topped it all for a fraction of the price. Yumi's food is fresh, fun, and full of variety. If you are there for multiple days, don't skip out. By the third night, we were excitedly waiting to see what was next. The tea was wonderful, as well.||||Between the hot baths, outstanding scenery, and relaxing environment - it was the perfect opportunity to relax and unplug. It actually helped reveal to us how burned out we were (in fact, we made a pretty big life decision as a result of the trip). Even if you're not into the Japanese culture specifically, come to get away. It's not that you won't be able to access the outside world - it's that here you won't want to. ||||We stayed on the top floor, where we looked out onto their beautiful garden, but the whole home is a treat. ||||Probably the most wonderful surprise was how at home we felt. While Yumi made some of the best food we'd ever tasted, Glenn was so very accommodating during the day. We spent Fourth of July with him at a local brewery and got to check out some of the local sites, thanks to his generous giving of time as a host. That evening, Yumi made special Independence Day-themed Japanese food. So fun! ||||My wife and I quickly reflected that this was easily one of the best vacations we'd ever had. Can't...
