We stayed 2 nights in one of the cabins on the Back 40. The cabins were very nice. Bright wood, loft upstairs with 2 twin beds, A/C, ceiling fan, older tv, microwave, minifridge, and a couch that had a pullout, as well as a table and chairs for eating meals. Master bedroom had a jetted tub, dresser, and a king sized bed.
First day/night was good. Ate dinner and had some drinks at the bar grille they have in their old west town in the Back 40. Food was good. Made a bonfire, (they will deliver wood for you if you pay for it at the general store, $5 if I am remembering correctly. Bathroom is respectable. Toilet is way to close to the wall and door, though. Good water pressure. Only complaint for the first night would be the old spring king sized mattress. It was very warm out and my fiance and I both woke up with sore backs and necks.
2nd night was the reason I'm only giving Double JJ 3 stars. Staff was very rude to use on the phone when we asked if they had a dress code for the steakhouse (near the golf course). Rude tone saying they were closed. We called shortly after 5pm. So we called the pizza place located in the building that has the indoor water park and they also said they were closed. After finding out that all 3 of the restaurants closed at 5pm that day (website said 8pm and bar stayed open until 11pm) we had to travel all the way out to stoney lake to find an open restaurant. (Yes I know we are at a camping resort, but we like to try local eateries). Later that night, there was a very rude group of people who are camping in the Back Forty who decided it was a good idea to shoot off fireworks all through the night. They also allowed their children to run around yelling through the woods at 12:30a.m. I first attempted to contact management of the Double JJ Ranch. They stated that the person setting off the fireworks was a private owner Within the facility and that there was nothing they could do about it and they had already received several complaints. They said my best bet would be to contact local Authority. When attempted contact local Authority the dispatcher stated that it was in the rule area of the county and that there was nothing that they could do about it they have do not follow the state of Michigan's guidelines for when fireworks can be shot off there for fireworks can be shot off at any time not just on day before, day of and after holidays that are recognized by the state.
I wish I could say I would stay here again because it is a really cool place with lots of activities for the entire family (golf, horseback riding, hay rides, water parks, arcades etc.) But having absolutely no authority over people that stay/live on a portion of your property when you have paying guests...
Read moreWe stayed at the Back Forty RV Park, initial impressions are just OK. I guess we expected more from the Double JJ brand. The old west town is crazy neat. The horses being nearby is awesome. The water park nearby looks inviting... But we are here the weekend before Memorial Day and much of this isn't open. We kind of expected this... BUT we didn't expect there to be very little maintenance of the RV park itself. Our lot (and others) seemed to have had no mowing preformed and there are plenty of limbs falling from trees that would be easily maintained but are not.
I will say, the bath house/toilets seem to be maintained nicely. The check-in process is a little goofy (especially with a 40ft trailer) as you have to check in at the main office 2 miles away and it's not REALLY designed for large trailers, but there is a large loop that you shouldn't have too much trouble with.
This is early in our stay though - maybe I'll reassess this before we leave...
Edit: as many RV parks WiFi is horrible, I thought I should mention that they do have a fairly consistent 4mpbs down and ~2mpbs up... I don't know where all it covers but ours was a few bars in our camper, not bad...
Read moreJuly 2021 - my family had a blast here in the back 40 ranch. The pool area back here has a small kid area. Another pool to play volleyball and basketball. Behind that is this water ride where you sit on an inner tube. Takes maybe 9 seconds to fly down it, through a barn and out you go. My 3 kids did it maybe 20 times in a row. Hardly a wait and that was their favorite part of our week vacation. By the cabins there is a spot to do a shared fire. We got to know 2 other families, and that was awesome. If we had our own, we would have never talked to anyone. The only knock I had was in the cabin, the stairs need a light or something. Its pitch black and if you have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, good luck not falling. We left one light on all night. However, my children loved sleeping in that loft. When you check in at the main area with the water park. You leave their and go to the main road. Turn left and maybe 1/2 mile on the left is the back 40. You will see a big sign. Nice people, and we are thinking of doing it again next year. Next year I am bringing my basketball, S'mores kit, and some outdoor games the...
