I live right down the road from Lucky Lake Campground. 2 weeks ago I stopped in and talked to the owner Don for a minute and received permission to metal detect in the private lake with a daily swim pass purchase $5/person. Today I decided to make a day out of it and bring the wife and kids to swim while I detected. Showed up at 4:00pm and bought passes and unloaded at the beach. I had not even made it to the water when Don said you can't dig in there. I explained to him on my previous visit what I planned on doing, and I'm not sure who would pay to scan in the lake and not retrieve the target. After he had my money in his pocket he changed his tune. Slightly irritated I packed everything back up and stopped to the office to explain that there must have been a misunderstanding and to see If I could get a refund. Politely I asked Don for a refund and I was called crazy if I thought I was getting my money back. He said "I told you that you could scan the ground I never said you could scoop dirt out of the lake. Needless to say I think Don is a crook and I have my opinion and can't wait to see his rebuttals on this comment. I will continue to voice my opinion of this crook in my little town indefinitely. There are much nicer campgrounds around are area for the same rate with shower houses, bathrooms with running water, mowed campsites, and don't have...
Read moreWe loved our recent camping experience at Lucky Lake Campground. The campground was nice and clean and wasn't busy at all and we were able to choose wherever we wanted. Our site was amazing and there was really good fishing on the lake. We can't even count how many fish we caught the entire time we were there. I did take one star away for the lack on bathrooms and shortage of shower facilities. The showers on the premises we nice and clean with great water pressure and hot water. We just wish there were a few more. The port-a-potties were ok, but ideally it would be nice to have bathroom facilities to use as well. We also assumed there was a bbq close to our site but there wasnt. We found some at the cute playground and outdoor center.
The city of Rothbury is a cute and quaint little town close to many attractions in the area. The Silver Lake Sand Dunes and Michigan's Adventure are close by. The town also includes a Westco and Dollar General. Both are handy places to pick up camping essentials and luxuries such as coffee!
Overall, the pluses far outweigh the minuses and we will...
Read moreThe only reason I am giving this campground a 2/5 is because it is beautiful and the water is so clear. We got to pick our (rustic) site upon arrival. We experienced nothing but good.
Now, onto the negative experience. We were kayaking when all of the sudden the owner (Don) sped his pontoon boat up to the dock where a larger family was playing. Instead of asking them nicely to move a floating doc back he yelled and swore at the family in front of MANY kids. He revved his engine at them while kids were in the water next to his boat. He drove his boat around continuing to yell and swear at them. He then grabbed a metal pole and pointed it at a mother and her small child. The family was trying to cooperate but he was being extremely inappropriate.
Not as bad but when I called ahead he was pretty rude as well.
If you are looking for a pretty campground to kayak and swim at I highly recommend. However, be aware of this owner because (reading the reviews) he is extremely...
