Powhatan Motel — Hotel in Greenville

We were on a road trip to points west and having read the reviews decided to stay here one night. Staff was cordial and welcoming. Yay. Quiet night’s rest though motel not far from highway. Yay. ||||Just a few suggestions: Room 12 (I think) has a king bed which is very comfy…if you can get into it. I’m just over 5 feet tall, 77 years old and there was no way I could get up there unaided—thick box spring and thick mattress on top of a frame that was 10-12” high. I pulled the one chair in the room over to the bed to serve as a step ladder. I suggest that a step stool be provided in this room when short people come to call. The gymnastics required to get up on that bed would challenge even Simone the G.O.A.T. ||||Also, there is plenty of room for a second chair! I had a reservation for tonight at the end of a 16 hour drive from New York but there was no one there to check in or answering the phone. I made the reservation on August 6th at 1:12pm. I wanted to be sure it would not be a problem arriving late. "As long as you arrive before midnight there is no problem. And if you are going to be later just call and we will work something out" said the very nice girl. I started calling after 9pm as I thought I might be a few minutes after midnight. No answer. I called every half hour until 11:30. I pulled in at 11:55pm. Motel office dark with a sign saying check in at the restaurant but the restaurant also closed and dark. I'm writing this review because the inflated score led me to have unrealistic expectations for my stay. I would not recommend booking the motel via a third party website as they will not use it. If you have a dog, beware that this is one of those properties that charges you $20 extra to stay in a room more disgusting. I found the cleanliness to be just okay. The walls are very thin, and overall, it was less charming and more creepy. There were cigarette butts all around my car like someone had been hanging out, looking in. The people were very kind, and I do love the idea of an independent, classic motel.
