This was our first experience at a Thousand Trails RV Park. We were NOT impressed. They do NOTHING to maintain the property. There were weeds everywhere and garbage when we pulled into the spot they assigned us. We drove back and they said there were no other sites available. This was NOT true. We were given a 1 year introduction membership with the purchase of our new RV. We decided to take advantage and try out a Thousand Trails, as we have never been to one. We were NOT impressed, in fact so disappointed.
We are a family of 4 and our dog.
We loved the location but were deflated when we got to our site. See photos.
We were basically looking at our neighbors sewer line if we were on the living side of the camper. We have slides on both sides and barely fit in the site. The worst part was the sewer clean out was about two feet high, we we had to construct an elevated bridge of sorts to allow for the hose to drain.
The kids area was a mess. The cabins are old and NOT kept up, we walked around the entire property several times. Not once did we see and ground crew maintenance happening. The wood is rotting and no one has painted the decks in YEARS.
They have two pools, one indoor and one outdoor. They have a hot tub at each and in the rules it says no children but any time we walked by the kids were playing in the hot tubs, so no chance for any adult to relax in one.
There is very poor Internet, and no Verizon cell service.
The roads are not maintained either.
There is No store and No food available on site. It is a 20 minute drive to town.
There is so much potential but it appeared no one cares.
This was not the way to make someone interested in buying a membership, that...
Read moreThis is actually å membership type camping situation, but as a pass through for us it worked perfect with the location. This location was recently brought into the Thousand Trails system, with most of their other locations along the East Coast, Midwest, Texas, Pacific Northwest as well as California and Arizona.
There were roughly 550 spots at this site. The majority of these were for motorhomes and travel trailers. There were also å good number of camper cabins and about a half dozen camping sites, which we used. These definitely offered the most privacy. Our site, #156, you had to cross å creek with a little bridge. The site had a couple of spots for the tent as well as a fire ring and small picnic table. It was a great spot! Thought we would see some wildlife, but no luck there.
There was a little lake which we didn't use and some other games and amenities. There was a minigolf course that was a little beaten up, but still fun. There was a main registration building with showers and indoor pool/hot tub which closed at 8:00pm. Another clubhouse had pool tables, outdoor pool and showers, which were open around the clock. That was nice for late night showers and early morning departures. The other clubhouse had snacks and games, but I don't believe showers.
They gave a lot of advertising and promotional material upon registering. Most people don't like this, but I enjoy going thru info on the local area.
The price for the campsite came to about 45 bucks, but with the showers and other amenities, it was worth it. This location, on the Blue Mesa, is perfect for exploring Gunnison, Crested Butte and the Black Canyon of...
Read moreWe really love this Thousand Trails RV park. The staff is kind and they're always helpful or otherwise doing something to improve the park residents' day. The weekly craft show and sale is lovely. They also offer coffee and doughnuts on Saturday mornings.
The fact that there are constantly events of some sort - games, chili for Father's Day, karaoke, etc. - is great. We really loved the indoor pool and hot tub. And we loved Gunnison and the surrounding area; try the Silver Thread Trail by car, the Alpine Loop via Lake City (we recommend renting an ATV or Jeep - it's pricey but cheaper than car repairs if something goes wrong on the Loop - do your research!), and Crested Butte - there's a dragon there! And definitely visit the Gunnison Valley Observatory; it's very cool and a terrific deal. We haven't visited Gunnison's canyon yet due to the bridge outage*. We travel with a boat, so it was amazing to have a couple boat ramps so close to camp.
We didn't have one second of issues with utilities, and we had 50 amp with full hookups. Sites are first-come-first served; our best advice is to arrive mid-week if you want the most options. However, we didn't try the camp WiFi (we have Starlink). Without using our internet to make calls, we did have issues with cell coverage. Not a big deal if you're visiting to 'get away from it all'.
We'll definitely return to this site. Thanks, y'all!
not really an issue if you're arriving from the...
