Imagine awakening to the sunrise dabbling through the pine trees through your room’s window. The sun is slowly rising over the bay behind your accommodations. Or better yet, heading down to your own private rocky shoreline, sitting in a two-seater Adirondack chair enjoying your morning coffee while watching the sun continuing to rise on the horizon and watching the birds and other wildlife. Then making your way back to a well-prepared breakfast, hearty enough to skip lunch. And don’t forget the scones or blueberry muffins or other tasty treats that Karen, your hostess, makes for you. ||I ran across Three Pines B&B by chance when looking for places to stay when visiting Acadia NP. Their website explains they are off the grid (got my interest!), a hearty breakfast awaits each morning (got my interest again!) and it is away from the hustle and bustle of a hotel or motel (really got my interest!!). ||Three Pines B&B is located off the main road and sits quietly at the end of a private road with Sullivan Harbor shoreline a quick walk from your room. Karen is the owner and hostess that took care of us during our stay. She made a great breakfast each morning! During our stay we had eggs frittata, French toast, and scrambled eggs along with scones and blueberry muffins. Each breakfast was quite delectable and filling enough to where we skipped lunch and just had an early dinner. ||Karen is a walking encyclopedia of information on Acadia NP and other notable sites to see in the area. We provided her our interest, and she made several recommendations for us to visit. Karen is also a great conversationalist. She provided multiple stories about the B&B, her farm animals, Ms. Magoo and the history of the land they purchased for the B&B. I wish we had more time to chat during our visit. ||We had the Gable room (upper room) which is a little bit smaller than the Timberframe room, even though they share the same footprint. The Gable room’s vaulted ceiling makes the four room corners less usable, but the inconvenience is made up with the great views of the morning sun rising over the bay.||The internet connection is a bit slow by today’s standards. Its good enough for checking email and the occasional Instagram video but probably not for streaming or holding a Zoom meeting. Remember, you are here to get away from the world and not bring it with you! If you need better internet service, head into Ellsworth, and go to Dunkin Donuts. Like Starbucks elsewhere, they are practically on every town corner in Maine.||If we end up heading back to that area of Maine again, I most certainly will have Three Pines B&B at the top of the list. Karen, thanks for the great Maine...
Read moreIf you're interested in Acadia/Bar Harbor AND the Schoodic Peninsula (and you should be), this is a fantastic location right on Frenchmen Bay, not far from the Tidal Falls. We stayed in the upstairs Gable Room for the view, and it was worth having a little less space to spread out. (Both rooms are the same footprint, but the gables upstairs significantly reduce the "usable" space; if you are tall, this room may feel uncomfortable for you.) The "driveway" is a half-mile jaunt through a beautiful forest, and we came upon deer and wild turkeys as we started or ended our days out. The hospitality is first-rate, and we appreciated having maps and advice to make the most of our vacation time. In fact, Karen's suggestion to hit Acadia in the late afternoon was ideal for our first foray into the park. Breakfasts are outstanding, with fresh produce grown onsite, eggs from the farm's chickens, and fresh-baked treats including blueberry muffins and maple-walnut scones. An unexpected highlight was the twin Adirondack bench right on the water. ||I was on the fence about booking because of other reviews and the very low room rates, but here are some observations you may find helpful: The upstairs room is not a great fit for folks who travel with a lot of stuff or need a lot of counter space. If you prefer daily housekeeping service, this is not for you. It's very dark at night, but the blinds on the upstairs windows (hidden in most photos by the lace curtains) do not cover the round part of the window, so when the sun comes up, so will you. Be prepared for a bathroom wall that does not go all the way to the ceiling--it is open to the bedroom in lieu of ventilation. Not a big deal for us, but it's unusual. Breakfast is served on the deck, and it was pleasant even in cooler temperatures. Coffee is available half an hour before breakfast, and while I recommend enjoying a leisurely start over the delicious food and good conversation, for those who need to get going more quickly, the host offered a goodie bag of baked goods to take away.||For us, this was a perfect location and an amazing experience. I would...
Read moreTo say that Karen and the Three Pines setting were outstanding is an understatement! We had only one night to stay here, but even before we arrived, and in follow-up contact since we left, our experience has been exceptionally great. Karen is a very gracious, welcoming host, readily sharing her knowledge of the area, patiently answering our questions about her eco-friendly B&B design, taking us to visit and learn about her sheep and the "guard" llama, pointing out and inviting us to enjoy hikes on and near the property, and spoiling our taste buds with a unique and very healthy breakfast. We had a very comfy upstairs room from which we enjoyed leisure reading and a grand view of the serene bay ... ah, what a peaceful night of rest, serenaded to sleep by the crickets and gently awakened by a nearby rooster. We don't have our own pets right now, so it was a treat to meet and pet her dog and kitties ... all rescued by the nearby pet shelter where Karen volunteers. This will remain an outstanding memory, and a place we would love...
