HUGE Letdown!! This place, this experience, this restaurant - they promote and sell it like it is 5 star worthy. Only to find out that all it has to offer is worth less than 1 star.
Let me 1st say - the grounds, the buildings, and the landscape is all beautiful and well maintained. And that is it.
I planned the evening for my wife & I to celebrate the holidays and their Christmas Kingdom of Lights. I chose to go on a Thursday because they charge $10 to get on the property on Fri & Sat. And I wasn't quite sure why.
When we arrived, we walked in to the lobby. The website said there are grounds to walk to see lights, over 100,000 of them, with Christmas trees and a gift shop. Also, to visit the Copper Mug restaurant for some delicious food in a beautiful environment. Lies! The woman working in the lobby didn't greet us. In fact, we looked awkwardly around the lobby and then had to approach her. She was not friendly nor helpful and looked like this was the last place she wanted to be. Zero personality and very unapproachable. I asked where gift shop was; she said along the back wall. We looked....it is NOT a gift shop. It is a few shelves with souvenirs. Literally maybe 10 overpriced items on a few shelves. Not a shop - more like a gift corner. Shame. Aside from the obnoxiously fast blinking lights that surround part of the castle (extremely displeasing to the eye), the castle was decorated pretty and the stage set up for Santa and Mrs. Claus were sweet (Santa only comes Fri & Sat - must be what the $10 is for. You pay $10 to see Santa...ripoff).
What we had really came for was the Copper Mug. We had seen the Hotel Hell episode back when it 1st aired in 2016. I was looking forward to eating at this newly designed menu, sit in the beautiful ambiance of the restaurant. The old inn feeling, with candles and a homey feeling. Nice, comfy chairs with beautiful place settings and an intimate setting. We walked to the restaurant and upon reaching the doors, you can see that the walkway to The Copped Mug has a red velvet rope blocking the entrance, forcing you to enter the banquet/event hall. When we walked thru the doors, we were greeted at a makeshift host stand and could see that the very large ballroom/event hall had various table sizes set up with banquet chairs and table cloths. I asked the host,."Is this the Copper Mug". "It is" he replied, very jovial and almost obnoxious. I said to him that I made reservations for The Copper Mug and no where on website or booking site does it say the actual restaurant is closed. We were escorted to a table in the corner. The far back corner. Where we saw others come in after us and receive servers with drinks. We were ignored however. And upon looking at the menu, it is not a complete menu. It is a shortened holiday menu. Now, let me explain - see, I read and re-read the website and I even called weeks ago and asked if it was the regular menu. All yes's. Then, that day, just 20 min before our reservation, I asked staff if it was regular menu or holiday menu. I was told Holiday menu is on Fri & Sat. Now - back to table. So menu...it is holiday menu. Done. Out of here.
We got up and walked over to the makeshift server/bar station is and complained. We never were served and people after us were. We were told it was a regular menu, it is not. There are missing items. We are sitting in a giant event hall, like at a wedding reception. Expect colder and more lackluster. And why would I pay $45.00 for a steak when I have zero doubt it will be good. Nothing else this place sold us to be has turned out accurate in the least bit. So why would I spend over $100 possibly on dinner when I am sitting in a giant event hall. I was half surprised there wasn't a giant dance floor and a DJ for us all.
What the heck do they charge $10 to get on the property for?!? The host was snarky, rude and pretentious. The manager looked like he was totally baffled at sort of apologetic. Pathetic. Absolutely a huge waste of time, gas money and energy...
Read moreI'll start with a bit of context. I first discovered Landoll's Mohican Castle with my mother a few years ago. We often like to explore Ohio and were excited to visit a castle. The land was beautiful and the property itself is very picturesque. Definitely not something I'd expect to see in Ohio! I loved this place SO much that, when my sister asked me for recommendations for her wedding, I told her this place was a definite win.
My sister was the main person communicating with the hotel leading up to the wedding. I wasn't even aware there was an issue until she called me in a panic stating that her wedding coordinator hadn't replied to her in 4 months. Mind you, this was just a few months before her wedding as well.
Needless to say, I was furious. Imagine, as a bride, not hearing anything from your wedding venue for months. A wedding venue that you had to submit a NON-REFUNDABLE deposit. So she was left fearing that she wouldn't have a wedding AND she was out over a thousand dollars.
Luckily, the hotel DID respond after those four months and connected her with a different event planner. I'm sure there were a few more hiccups leading up to the day of the wedding but, compared to the four month interim, I wasn't as upset.
Now we get to the room: Pros: Beautiful big room, super comfy bed, nice couch, lovely bathroom and fireplace. The bay windows OPEN so you can get a breeze. Cons: The lighting was bad - it was hard to take pictures of the bride inside but we managed. The wifi was horrible, I barely had bars until I sat in a corner of the bedroom. The tv is a bit outdated and we basically gave up on using it because of the wifi. The ice room was hard to find (my fault though because I should have read the pamphlet). EXPENSIVE.
Day of the wedding: I'm no Karen. I can deal with mistakes. I was the MOH at this wedding so I felt it was my duty to be a little nit-picky. I will preface by saying that this was a micro wedding, not a lot of people. The bride knew this going into the wedding. That being said, the things she DID pay for (+ the compensations she was given for the ridiculous event planner situation) was a tad bit disappointing.
The wedding was held outdoors in October. I've never seen bees in October. There were bees at the wedding. I don't like bees. A lot of people don't like bees. Everyone sitting to watch the ceremony had a bee land on them. The hotel can't control nature, sure, but clearly there must be some hive around for there to be THAT many.
The ceremony CONCEPT was beautiful. We had a rehearsal that went great. I don't know whose fault it was but my sister walked late down the aisle due to some communication issues between the Dj and the event planner? (I'm not sure exactly who it was so don't quote me on that one). No problem though.
The Reverend, bless her, could not pronounce my sister's name for the life of her. It WAS funny the first few times. But it was not funny the rest of the time. There are photos, taken by the photographer, of people scowling because of this. Multiple people spoke up and it was still not corrected. This was extremely frustrating.
The banquet hall was nice, a tad roomy. I wasn't there for the entire conversation between my sister and the event planner, but I found it surprising that we were made to take everything down after dinner. To reiterate, we began dinner at 5 and ended around 8. At 8pm, the bride, the groom, and most of the wedding party had to breakdown EVERYTHING. I thought at least they could've let us wait till the morning. Oh well, not a big deal either.
ONE of the front desk employees was rude. The other was not. I've seen a lot of reviews about a rude front desk employee but I'm not sure if we've all been dealing with the same one. The one I dealt with in the evening was wonderful, 10/10.
To conclude: Landoll's Mohican Castle is a very pretty place. I would certainly go there again, perhaps for a cute weekend stay with my husband or some special occasion. Would I have my wedding...
Read moreWe just stayed here from Jan. 1st, 2021 to Jan 3rd, 2021. The castle itself is beautiful outside. The grounds are much larger than the appear online and there are many different buildings that are a part of the hotel. The inside of the lobby as well as the event building are more modern than the rest of the castle. We stayed in the Landoll Suite and it was really expansive. The pictures of the room on their site do not do it justice. The room is up six flights of stairs in a tower to a door that leads to the suites front deck. Once you open the door to the suite you can see the large room spread from side to side. There is a four chair dining set to the left up a staircase. Next to the eating area is a spiral staircase up to a tower that has a circular balcony surrounding it. There is a large bed and a pull out couch, small fireplace, a kitchenette area and a bathroom with jetted tub, shower, and heated floors. There is also one final balcony off the right side of the suite with a small iron bench. The bones of the room itself felt very appropriate to the castle and even the painting job and finishes added to the feeling. Mostly everything was adequate for our stay. However there were some issues: the room had many hanging fixtures and window treatments which meant that dust was collected easily there, especially in the bathroom which was unpleasant to take a bath under. The bathroom also had an angled shelf which guests have taken to throwing things onto and the hotel has not cleaned it off. The wine fridge in the room was not really cold enough to keep things in that need to remain cold which is a problem if you cannot afford their food on top of your room costs and planned to bring your own. The microwave was adequate although it is a small one. A larger issue in the kitchen was they only provide four of everything and no cleaning supplies so on the first night the three of us had already used most of everything. There are also no napkins or paper towels so if you spill something I suppose you are just supposed to leave it for them to clean it up? In the pool house the sauna was closed as well.
The most upsetting thing happened at check-in the person working night shift was explaining breakfast and lunch being in their event hall and said even though you order off a menu with prices, it is complimentary. We were so surprised we asked if she was definitely saying breakfast and lunch were free and she said yes. The following morning while we were ordering breakfast we asked the server if it was just the entrees that were included. The server said yes only entrees and took our order. When she came back with our food she said that will be "$27.." and we were surprised again. We explained what we were told and then she discussed with her manager. She returned and said no one should have told us that we would get free food and they weren't sure why anyone did. They then charged us full price for the food, even though we ordered it thinking it was free, and it's pricey. We complained about the issue with our promised complimentary food upon check-out and we really expected a small compensation of a gift shop item or refund, however they didn't seem to really care we were promised multiple free meals for the weekend and received none.
Some of these things are understandable, I understood this place would be outdated when I booked it and looked at the reviews. I was glad the rooms were in pretty good condition but they really need to dust every space they have. I'm really disappointed that we were not compensated for their very large error of telling us we were going to be receiving free food all weekend, any other hotel, restaurant, resort, etc would make that right. It's got great potential, the staff are really sweet, the grounds are nice. It just needs updated and...
