What can we say about the Notchland, other than to offer it thanks as we celebrated our elopement weekend. We were looking for a comfortable retreat where we could reconnect with each other, and from the moment we visited in July to our ceremony, it was just the right amount of service and care. Both my (now) husband and I aren't really fussy, and we chose elopement because we're not "in the spotlight" kind of people. Both Ed and Les helped us achieve a laid back, surreal and beautiful ceremony (even though I got overwhelmed it still was lovely!) Ed even helped us with our handfasting cord which was very appreciated as we had both forgotten how to tie it by the time we got to the Inn.
Mary Ann and Mark were also very helpful, both exuding warmth and humor. Mary Ann is the kind of cool older lady I hope to be one day. The whole property has a great sense of character and we kept finding notes in the binder in our room as well as on signs and menus that made us chuckle. If you like puns and you have a quirky wit about you, this is your place.
And how could we forget the dogs? Mia and Choura were fine furry companions - Mia, always ready for a belly rub and Choura bounding about. We got to know and appreciate their distinct personalities. For some folks this might be an issue, but Bernese are really good and loveable dogs. Personally I was happy to have them be part of our stay and they even showed up during our ceremony, which made it all better.
From the ducks in the pond, to the humming birds, to the many dragonflies, the location was "top notch"! And to top an already wonderful thing off, being able to look out on the tapestry of stars in the early morning was one of the most grounding experiences I've had as of recent.
We will fondly remember our time at the Inn, and we're grateful to be part of its fabric. While we were staying, another couple had gotten married and a guest who was there celebrating their own anniversary congratulated us, so we hope we can return and do the same for newly wedded couples.
Thank you, Notchland (and Dr. Sam Bemis) for imparting your...
Read moreWords are insufficient to capture The Notchland Inn's enchantment. From the moment we arrived, greeted by a fluttering of yellow swallowtails, the serene beauty of English-style gardens, we knew we were in for something extraordinary. We found ourselves planning our next visit before we even crossed the threshold.
My husband and I had long contemplated marriage, but the daunting task and expense of planning a traditional wedding had held us back. Reading about the elopement package on Notchland's website, we felt an immediate sense that it was the right choice for us, and it was better than we could have ever imagined. Despite undoubtedly hosting countless ceremonies, Ed, Les, and the entire staff showered us with genuine care, attention, and love that made us feel like their first couple. Their expertise and warmth made our special day even more unforgettable. I was also insistent that we get married outdoors in the pouring rain and they obliged without question. It meant so much to me.
What distinguishes The Notchland is its meticulous attention to detail and the staff's contagious passion for sharing the magic of their sanctuary with guests. Their dedication to ensuring each visitor experiences the best possible stay is evident in every aspect of the inn.
Now, I am a cat-person through and through, but meeting Choura and Mia, the inn's welcoming committee, awakened in me a newfound longing for dog energy that I never thought was possible. We haven't even been gone 24 hours, and I've already spent hours researching Berner and Bordernese breeds.
The playful sense of humor of the staff added an extra layer of fun. Witticisms are tucked into every conversation and scattered throughout the inn, from the breakfast menu to the signage, waiting to be discovered and enjoyed.
I could keep going, but the last note I'll share is that it is unfortunate that Notchland is two hours away because after enjoying their expertly prepared breakfast and four-course dinner experience, there's nowhere else I'd rather dine. The food is top-notch –...
Read moreThe old Michelin touring guides had ratings like "worth a visit" "with a detour", The Notchland Inn is "worth to choose as your destination".|This very cold January was my third visit, and everything still made for an unforgettable experience.|Location is spectacular, food is wonderful, rooms , all with working fireplaces, are all beautiful and cozy.|The most outstanding part is the hospitality. Les and Ed, the owners, will literally drop what they are doing to welcome you in, and make sure you have all you need.|This trip we stayed in Sandwich cottage, two bedrooms and two bathrooms, jacuzzi tub, full kitchen nestled in the woods overlooking the White Mountains. The two beautiful dogs welcomed us to dinner and Mark was a wonderful dinner host, and a great cheerleader for the area. Salmon, tuna crudo, crab cakes, cobbler, but OH the bread pudding! Les recommended a hike to Arethusa Falls which was quite a workout for, um, upper middle aged folks, but well worth it and the reward was a long hot soak in the jacuzzi tub, of course with thoughtfully provided bath salts. Walking to dinner on a frigid night with the stars overhead and the inn lit up like a fairyland with a very warm welcome and a delicious glass of pinot noir made winter seem a delectable season after all. I have traveled the world for business and pleasure and stayed in many of the world's finest hotels, but the combination of hospitality, food, accommodations, location and, well DOGS, make this a place to which I will...
