We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Honu Kai! Everything about this place is magical and zen. The room was private, clean, and had AC. We slept so well in the huge bed and loved the cozy pillows. As soon as you drive up you are greeted by cute little chickens running around, as well as the serene sounds of birds, frogs, and trickling water from the koi pond. The host Amy is so welcoming and kind, she showed us where our room was and gave us a tour of the property. We had a private entrance to our room as well as a space in the fridge to place any foods/drinks. Just sitting on the lanui is so peaceful and relaxing. There are plenty of seats to sit and enjoy the sounds of nature with a glass of wine or coffee. You could just sit and enjoy time here for hours. Among the amazing perks of this BnB is the proximity to town. You can drive ten minutes away and be in downtown Kona where there are a ton of cute shops and restaurants right by the water. If you plan to head to the beach, everything you could think of is provided by the host. We enjoyed borrowing snorkeling gear, beach chairs, boogie boards and a beach umbrella. They also provide clean beach towels every day! Everything about this place is perfect, you can tell how much thought is put into making guests feel welcome. If you are looking for the perfect place to stay while in Hawaii, look no further you've found the perfect spot!

Stayed here for a week in 2018. The owners are both super nice people and made our trip to the big island much more enjoyable with their practical advice and recommendations. Also, I never realized how helpful a cooler would be on road trips! Breakfasts, made by the owners, were also outstanding, and got to try a lot of fruits not found as easily on the mainland. What I really liked is their use of local ingredients and products for their food. We found after breakfast we didn't need lunch! The B&B grounds were very nice and well maintained, with lots of areas to relax and spend time with the other guests, or by yourself if you want. I loved watching the variety of birds come to the feeder each day, geckos bathe in the sun, and there are also a couple cats! (They keep them out of the guest rooms so no allergy concerns). Location wise, it is close to a number of stores like Walmart, Target, Costco, and also to the airport. Also has easy access to the highways to Hilo and waimea. Couple of minor negatives - if you're a light sleeper there are roosters in the area that make noise in the early AM. Owners are trying their best with this. Also in the Nigiri room, the bath/shower is lower than the floor and may be difficult if you have mobility issues. Hopefully they can add a grab bar there. I would highly recommend this B&B and we are likely to return in the future!

We stayed 4 nights in the Mala hale bungalow. There were 3 of us so our daughter had the large fold out sofa bed. The bungalow is nice and big with all necessary equipment in the kitchen if you want to cook plus there is heaps of other stuff outside which everyone can use. As everyone else mentions- the breakfasts are amazing, a fruit platter and also the hot food plate after which varies each day. The grounds are beautiful- we are happy we chose to stay up on the side of the volcano where it rains more rather than the drier kona city. Drive a little further up the mountain and it gets even more lush around the mountain thunder coffee plantation (check that out). Note there are very noisy frogs - I didn't mind them but earplugs may help- which are provided! Everything you need is there such as beach equipment, coolers with ice blocks beach towels etc.. This was a great location out of the city up near the clouds where it rains more and is more lush but isn't far out of the city and close to airport. Highly recommend going here to really feel like your on holidays without all the tourists.

What a wonderful stay at a very nice and beautiful bed and breakfast. The grounds were stunningly beautiful. Chickens, birds, tropical flora, trees. Lots of green.|The outdoor Lanai was comforting and spacious, and a perfect place in the morning for breakfast which l might add was Delicious!|There was a hot tub, reading area, and a table with a fire pit under the Lanai.|One thing we really liked was the location. 10 to 15 minutes away from restaurants, the beach, and easy access to get on the road to wherever your destination is. |We went the Blue Hawaiian helicopter tour which was only a 32 minute easy drive from the B & B. The location of this place is perfect, away from the crowds and hustle and busssle of traffic. |We can't say enough about our host "Amy" the nicest person l have ever met! She literally goes out on a limb to make sure your vist at the Hona Kai is Perfect! She goes above and beyond to make your stay memorable. |We had an incident where our rental car "Jeep" the alarm went off and were unable to drive the car. We had an appointment for a Helicopter ride with Blue Hawaiian which we had paid $1568 for a 2.5 hour flight. We didn't buy the insurance to cover it in case something happened. We'll, long story short we had 1 hour to get there, 32 minute drive, and the alarm goes off for the Jeep, and it won't let me drive the car. Amy, our host gives us her car to drive so we could make it on time. If we had been at a hotel we would have been screwed! For someone to loan their car to a stranger, says alot about Amy. On the way back from our first ever helicopter tour which was Awesome! We stopped off at the airport and had the battery replaced in the fob. That took car of the problem. But Wait! There's More! 2 days we had plans to go to Waipo Valley for an 11:00 tour a 1.5 drive. When we clicked the fob to unlock the car, the alarm went off and we couldn't drive the Jeep again! So another $150 we could lose if we don't make it.|Guess What? Amy our host to the Rescue again! No chance of the Rental Car answering the phone! Amy drove us to the airport so we could complain about the rental car. They gave us another Jeep and sent a tow truck to pick the other Jeep up. Fortunately we made our tour just in time thanks to Amy!|The Waipo Valley tour was Awesome, unless your a Hawaiian resident you can't do this on your own.|Amy was just good to us, she was just as giving to the other 3 couples at the B & B. One couple did have a GPS, really old phone so Amy gave them her phone.|Amy has a wealth of knowledge of the Island on where to visit and tour.|We hiked down to the Captain Cook monument, a long way down, and a long way back up, but not that hard. We saw kids a d older adults walking it. It's 4.25 miles Roundtrip. About 2.5 hours for us, we didn't lolly gag too much.|It was our 44th wedding anniversary and we ate at Jackie Reys, a little pricey but the food was excellent and the portions were a good size. Open air restaurant across from the ocean and away from the crowds and tourists and there parking!|A good Note that Amy gave us was for parking. It's $12 an hour to park down by the strip. Park at the Elks Club parking lot, free. There isn't a big sign that says Elks Club so you won't see it when your GPS says you've reached your destination. It's the parking lot facing the main road so drive around the back of the building and pull through the parking lot to the front by the road, it's a five minute walk to the beach and all the happenings. The sign for the Elks Cub is very small on the window. |We highly recommend the Hona Kai B & B. Oh, and you can get your laundry done for $10 a load by Amy and it will be nicely fed up for you when you return to your room. We found this very helpful sine it's humid and the sweat makes your clothes smell awful. |For the host " Amy" location, amenities, breakfast, and scenery the Hona Kai is the perfect place.|This was our first time to the Big Island and we made the right choice staying here.|Thank You Amy.|Peter...

Not just a BnB – but a Ohana Home!

My wife and I stayed in Honu Kai BnB for 4 nights in Dec 2021 – 2 nights in Mahina room and 2 nights in the bungalow room. Wendi and Dave are AWESOME hosts, and even though we have stayed in 20+ BnBs in the last 3 years – this was easily the BEST BnB ever! They truly treat you like family, and you feel like you are at home (just much more luxurious). Some specifics: Rooms – Both Mahina room and the Bungalow were great. Comfortable beds, well stocked washrooms, nice towels. The Mahina room also had a A/C which we used in the night. The bungalow had a huge private lanai (balcony), and a big living room + kitchenette, which we also really enjoyed! Loved both rooms – but if you need more space, try to stay in the bungalow. Breakfast – They serve a finger-licking good 3 course breakfast (see my pics). Wendi easily accommodated my vegetarian dietary restrictions, and we were typically so full that we skipped lunch most days! Breakfast was served from 730-9 AM everyday on a big family style table, and we liked the fact that we didn’t need to commit to a time in advance. Just roll out of bed, and you will be treated like a king! Beach gear – A big highlight/convenience factor for us. There are beach chairs, umbrellas, boggey board, snorkels, fins, towels, ice box etc etc. which you could borrow for the day! It was like a well stocked rental shop – just free 😊. Also we were allowed to take the gear the morning of check in, and keep it until the end of the day the day we checked out, which meant we didn’t have to come back and forth. Hosts – Wendi and Dave are OUTSTANDING CARING people, which made our stay even more special. When our flight got cancelled they flexed their plans so that we had a place to stay for 2 extra nights. When our friends flight got cancelled, while they didn’t have any availability, Wendi called multiple friends of hers to get them a hotel room at a friends and family rate of ~$200 something, when the market rate over NYE was around $5-6K. Concierge services – Wendi and Dave know everything about everything on Big Island! They gave us a hand curated restaurant guide, helped us plan each of our days (even when we were not staying with them), gave us 1 page printouts of what to do where, the list goes on. Ambience – Super well decorated place, have a nice koi fish pond and an outdoor hot tub. Location – 8 min drive to downtown Kona, so pretty convenient. Nothing is really walking, but like us I think everybody in Hawaii rents a car, so no big deal 😊 All in all, a big part of why we enjoyed Big Island so much (despite a canceled flight), was because of Wendi and Dave’s hospitality. If we go back to Kona again, we will ensure we stay...
