Slow down and enjoy the beauty. Plan to spend at least half a day hiking the "steam vent trail" through the rainforest to see the many wild orchids (3 types) and fascinating trees; hike the property to see the lava tube, fruit orchard, plunge pool, and of course the two steam-heated soaking tubs (rainwater cleaned by solar powered spa filters). The steam is wonderful'. Of course the reason it's at rainforest is because it rains almost every day, but not usually for very long. Then you can drive to see the area just miles away where 750 homes where destroyed by lava in 2018 (the roads just end!), the pounding surf on the black lava coastline, the black-sand nude beach (if you want!), the 100 year old Painted Church, the Lava Trees State Park... and that's all to the southeast! Just 5 miles north is the crazy-funky town of Pahoa with funny little shops and restaurants, along with a good grocery store so you can make breakfast and lunch for yourselves every day. Each "cottage" has a small kitchen with a real gas stove for those who like to cook, a porch with patio furniture with a stunning view. They are really well maintained, as are the grounds. It's a good basecamp to see the rest of the windward side of the Big Island. Great beaches in Hilo (30 minutes away), beautiful public gardens, famous waterfalls including 440 ft Akaka, and a chocolate plantation tour. For another day, it's just 25 miles west to Volcano National Park! Beyond that, the black sand beach where you can swim and watch the sea turtles sunbath. What a state! We spent a week and wanted more time to just stay slowed down. And that's even with spotty WiFi. Or maybe...

Wow! What an incredible visit we had at this amazing retreat. The drive in was breathtaking. The grounds are so beautiful and well taken care of and the ocean view from the property is very serene and calming. We stayed in the Rainbow cottage and couldn't have asked for a more perfect atmosphere. Everything was super clean and welcoming, with all the standard amentities. They have a booklet with tons of information about the area and recommendations for food, sights, etc. After a long day traveling, the hot tubs were heaven sent. We soaked while listening to the birds and frogs at a perfect temperature. There are two tubs and both were exceptionally clean and fresh. They are private from each other and we used them almost every morning. I highly recommend walking along the steam vent trail. It's so peaceful and relaxing. There are tons of fruit trees that you can pick from on the grounds too. I just fell in love with this place and we are already planning a visit back to this gem...

Puna Rainforest Hot Spring Retreat is an absolute slice of paradise! Nestled on 20 acres of lush Hawaiian rainforest with breathtaking ocean views, this private estate offers both luxury and serenity. We stayed in two of the cottages, which were beautifully appointed, clean, and cozy—perfect for relaxing after exploring the grounds.

The property has so much to offer: volcanically heated hot tubs, a swimming pool, a 1.2-mile nature trail, and plenty of fresh fruits and garden delights to enjoy. We loved strolling the steam vent trail and soaking in the peaceful surroundings.

Jacklynn, the owner, was so kind and attentive. She made sure we had everything we needed, from fresh towels to helpful guidance, and was always just a call away. Whether you’re looking for a solo retreat, a small wedding, family reunion, or just a quiet getaway, Puna Rainforest is the perfect escape....

We had a great staycation on the East Side! It’s not always easy to spend on accommodations when you already live in Hawai‘i, but this place was absolutely worth it. The property is peaceful and remote, and surrounded by the forest reserve where you can see what a real Hawaiian rainforest looks like with native trees such as ‘ōhi’a, ohe and kōpiko. The steam vents, hot tubs and cold plunge make it a very special and unique experience. We stayed in the Green Cottage, which was clean, comfortable, and well set up. It was very private even though the four cottages are somewhat close together. The owner Jacklyn was super nice and helpful and made up the couch as a bed for our son. Our son loved playing with the dog Kalo and making friends with Sammy the tortoise. Take it from a local… this place is great! We’ll definitely be back.
