Update: After sending an email to them expressing my concerns. Long's Staff responded with care and concern for our bad experience and did what they could to make it right. I have updated my review to reflect their willingness to acknowledge and take accountability.
Serious Safety Concerns After Medical Emergency
We stayed at Long’s Retreat recently and unfortunately experienced a medical emergency that revealed some serious issues with their emergency response systems and staff training.
A family member had two grand mal seizures while we were at our cabin. There was no cell phone service or WiFi, and we had no way to call 911. We had to physically drive to the front office to get help. The staff sent a security guard who offered little support and didn’t appear to have any medical or trauma-informed training. It took nearly 30 minutes for an ambulance to arrive.
When the EMTs arrived, one of them was rude and confrontational toward my brother, who was understandably distressed seeing his spouse seizing. The situation escalated instead of calming down. I offered to ride in the ambulance to avoid further conflict, but even then, Long’s security continued to violate boundaries and make things worse, including touching my brother without consent and threatening to call law enforcement when he asked them to back off.
To make matters worse, once we got to the hospital, we couldn’t communicate with the rest of our family still at the cabin due to the lack of service. We were completely cut off during a crisis.
Long’s Retreat may offer beautiful surroundings, but this experience made it clear that they are woefully unprepared for emergencies and lack the infrastructure and training needed to keep guests safe. I hope they take this feedback seriously and make...
Read moreNot a good place to go if you have a family member who is handicapped. They have handicapped parking, but the people there are the issue. Nearly all the handicapped spaces were taken by drunks on golf carts. They also park their carts behind the handicapped spaces so you can't pull in. We talked to several of the employees and only one seamed to be concerned. There were also cars parked in the handicapped spaces SEVERAL TIMES that did not have tags.
The employees also use the handicapped parking there as well. One of the employees told me "it's ok I work here". So I guess it's ok for them to take a space reserved for someone with a disability that really needs it. Another employee parked in the handicapped at the shower house even though the parking lot was half empty. We saw the white Longs trucks parked in the spaces many times.
Handicapped spaces are only to be used by people who need them, like my wife. Not a bunch of drunks on golf carts, employees or people who just want a parking space.
The owners REALLY need to educate their staff and campers about this issue. When they see a guests without a tag parked in a handicapped spot they need to make them move, have the vechical towed away, or kick them out.
They have a nice campground but this is an issue that needs to be addressed. We camp all over the country, and never had issues as bad as we did here with parking. It would also be nice if they had a few paved sites for someone in a wheelchair.
They also need to be stricter on people smoking (not just cigarettes) and drinking especially in areas where there...
Read moreWe have been coming for several years now. It's definitely quieter than back in the day with over night/ weekenders staying. Which is nice but sad in away. Some people can ruin a good stay and is understandable.
The cabins are great. Except air conditioners need better maintained. Maybe new mattresses. Love that the patios are going concrete and cabins are being upgraded. Really improving.
Loved the pizza. And the staff was great everytime I spoke to them. They explained why no lids and straws and I do agree with their decision about not having them. We need to take care of the nature around us. So be sure to bring your own cups with lids that attach. Please pick up trash you create. Just because they have staff that keep the place nice and neat doesn't mean customers need to leave a mess.
Arcade definitely needs games to be fixed. Price was good. But need more kiddo games. Pool tables would be nice, ping pong, shuffle board, even badminton maybe.
Showers were nice and clean. Plenty of hot water. The store was nice and seemed to be stocked with great supplies.
The beach was nice. Love that the chairs they rented was less than I thought it would be. The lifeguards were great. Definitely on their toes with watchful eyes and safety in mind.
Definitely happy that there is a dollar general just down the road because we made a few trips there.
Do wish there was Wifi. Tho vaca is suppose to be a getaway.
All in all a great little vaca with the family and will come...
