I was there mid October 2025
This campground in in the New River Gorge National Park. It was really nice, and free which was awesome!
It was very open, I had mixed emotions about that, it led to no privacy and at night was a bit eerie.
The picnic tables are SO far from the firepits at the sights, we were constantly carrying things back and forwards, then inbetween the two there is a charcoal grill. The picnic table is a round metal table with 4 benches. It will not work for your traditional picnic table covers and it cannot be moved around your site as it is cemented in which sucked. However, it was very clean.
There was a few vaulted bathrooms. One was closed, the other smelled horrible, there was no signs to keep the lids down which prevents the smell. Plus ran out of toilet paper in the girls bathroom so bring your own or wipes.
There is a train that is basically on the campground, it was cool to see. But very loud. It bothered me the first night, but it didn't the second. In the cooler months, everything is covered in dew by 8-9pm and expect it to remain wet until about 11am the next day by time the sun comes around.
There is not a drop of shade, so this is a perfect spot for cooler months, if not you would need some shade pop ups. It is very grassy which makes for comfortable tent camping and perfect for dogs and kids to run around and play.
This is tent, camper and RV friendly. Also most importantly, dog friendly.
There was a lot of deer, there is a welcome center 5 minutes away, a place to throw trash so you don't have to pack out. But no place to buy firewood or collect firewood, so make sure you bring that. There is also a grill on the firepit which was nice. We also did not see a campground host.
This is near the bottom of the NRG. It was far from everything in regards to hiking. An hour to the bridge, and a good 45 mins from Sandstone Falls or Grandview (two opposite directions).
You cannot reserve so it is FCFS which can be nerve wracking when trying to plan. There was full cell service for calls, data and texting with Verizon.
I did not regret staying here and it was a great free option, but I don't think we would stay here again unless we were driving by and just needed a place...
Read moreWe came down here for Memorial Day Weekend and were pleasantly surprised to find that 5 spots were remaining in the early afternoon. We were lucky to find a spot since every other campground was full. This spot is very wide open and you are pretty close to other campers with little to no privacy. On the particular weekend we stayed, we encountered many inconsiderate campers. This site is great for stargazing but other campers would shine bright flashlights your way, some had their headlights on, and some campers were arriving/leaving very late at night and being disruptive. It is also easy to hear conversations of other campers and many were up late talking. This site is quite far from many of the main attractions at New River Gorge so expect to drive at least 45 minutes. There’s also train tracks right next to this site and they can occasionally be heard at night. If you are looking for a site that is serene and quiet, this may not be the...
Read moreThis is a wonderful campground especially considering it’s price: free! Location is great for when you’re visiting the nearby new river gorge National Park and the surrounding areas. There’s decent cell service with Verizon data. Each site has a fire grill and a picnic table. They’re decently spaced out with no foliage in between so little privacy in that aspect. There was no bathroom or water access when we were there the very beginning of April. There was a dumpster that campers were using. Beautiful hills around. Pet friendly. The main downside is that there’s a train super close to the sites, a coal carrying one that goes by 3 or 4 times a day. Very scary for young children/pets. One of my pictures shows just how close it is from the site we stayed in for two nights. All in all super grateful for the access to so much free camping in this area!...
