I came to Lochaerie Resort from the urban jungle of Los Angeles, where it gets about 300 days of sunshine a year. I am not a fan of sunny weather, so what better place to visit than one of the rainiest spots in the lower 48 during the rainiest month of the year (November). Yes, I purposely did this. I got the rain I so desired...in droves. If this is what you are seeking, look no further. Lochaerie is a truly beautiful place to experience quiet and solitude (especially in the winter), and Cabin Christie is the perfect balance of rustic and having the right amenities to be comfortable. It's situated just above the lake shoreline on Onion Rock (be aware the steps leading down to the cabin are steep and require a slower, steady pace to get there). The views are absolutely impeccable and the cabin itself is very cozy and comfortable. You have both a heater and a fireplace, and a single bundle of firewood is provided by the resort on a daily basis (which was more than enough for my needs). The bed is super comfortable and kept me warm during the cold nights. The kitchen also has a microwave. In addition, the roof of the cabin was recently replaced, which proved to be very reassuring during a couple of heavier wind episodes.
Even though I was there to go "off the grid" for a few days, my cell phone signal (Sprint) was fine. I was able to make calls as needed.
Tom and Chris (who run the resort) were extremely friendly and helpful. Chris was very accommodating and flexible with me having to reschedule my stay, and they were both wonderful to finally meet. I was especially grateful for their help after I had a bit of an accident where I cut open my finger pretty bad. They helped me temporarily minimize the bleeding so that I could drive to the nearest hospital (about an hour away in Aberdeen) to get it stitched up. They really took care of me in every possible way during my stay.
Lochaerie is as perfect as it gets if you need to reconnect with nature. You are centrally located to countless incomparable places (beaches, rainforest, etc.). You will never run out of beautiful places to see. I will definitely be returning in the hopefully...
Read moreThis place was awesome! Here are some details some might be looking for that I wasn’t able to find online through the website or reviews. The cabin we stayed in (ellinor) had a small kitchen that was stocked. Items provided were silverware, basic cooking utensils, pots and pans, etc. They provided paper towels, soap, towels, garbage bags, firewood, etc. Not every cabin has a direct view of the lake, but there is a steep trail/stairs down to the lake to get a good view of the lake. There are some really cool common areas with fireplaces, a common room to check out games, TV’s, grills, etc. The buildings were built in the 1920’s but you wouldn’t know it. The caretakers have done a phenomenal job making these comfortable clean cabins for use. Our cabin had a book showcasing the changes the building had undergone to make it what it is today. We had no elders with us, but if you have anyone with accessibility issues planning your trip, be sure to give the owners a call to see which cabin they recommend as many of these cabins are accessed by stairs. We had cell coverage at this property as well. All this being said, I give the place 5/5 stars because of how well they have preserved this property. They really did a great job fitting this into the landscape as I’m sure there are difficulties operating within a national park. Great job and we...
Read moreThis place was wonderful - quaint cabins right on the lake. We stayed at Storm King. The cabin was so cute, it had everything we needed, the lake was right outside the windows, which we kept open all night. The location is great - close to many easy, but beautiful hiking trails. It feels very remote, but is a reasonable distance for a vacation. A very fun and relaxing place with canoes, kayaks, toy floats, and paddle boards available for our use. We took a nice canoe trip to picnic on a private beach. It was really quiet - we never heard the other guests, but we did hear the river otters. We also saw a bald eagle, lots of flowers, and black berries. The nearby hikes have waterfalls, frogs, banana slugs, otters, squirrels, and so many ferns and mushrooms. It is a great location to make family memories and to visit again and again. The hosts were great. They take care of all your needs seamlessly, like hidden house elves, with the result being that you feel alone in the woods, but well cared for at the same time. storm king has only one bedroom with a door (all three bedrooms are lovely though). Please note that the steps down to the cabin and to the beach are very steep, so consider a different cabin if you have mobility issues. We really loved it and hope to...
