I found this hotel online at $55 per room per night. I could not find a way to book online so I called and the lady told me it would be $65 per night & so I agreed to it figuring the website was dated & made a reservation & she said she didn't need my card info. Uh-Oh. When I got there a month or so later there was a 55 gallon barrel out back with trash burning in it. And dang, it smelled like nasty trash was burning. When I went inside the woman checking me in had no record of me but they had the rooms. I got one for me & one for my fishing guide. There was no check-in paperwork. The rooms were pretty clean. I am now trying hard to find something else positive to say. The shower barely worked. The knob was a mystery. I thought I was going to have be Harry Houdini to make it work & then it came on but I can't take credit for making it come on. It just happened. The hotel restaurant/bar was so noisy, it was too loud to sleep. I tried to counteract the rowdy noise with the TV & the remote was a bigger mystery than the shower. I got it to work on a single channel that had annoying stuff on it. I called & asked them if they could turn the jukebox & the crowd down. They did just that - at closing time. I did not get much sleep at all. Me & my fishing guide (Chad Richardson) went out & caught tons of fish & had an awesome day ice fishing. We went back to the hotel restaurant in a good mood & ate supper. Our supper was really good & the restaurant service overall was really good. I dealt with the mystery shower again & this time I couldn't find the moderation between hot & cold & believe me I did not need or want a cold shower. I looked like poor ole Wile E. Coyote when I came out of the shower trembling wet & cold. Then I got in the bed & warmed up determined to make the TV cooperate. Remarkably I changed channels once but could not again, and a moderate volume of it would not drown out the wired up crowd downstairs. I called & pleaded to them that I needed to sleep and for about 10 minutes it seemed to be calming a little & then they got their second wind (or bottle). The walls were so thin it was like being in a Honky-tonk. The good fishing on the ice the next morning kept me going somewhat but I was so sleep deprived, I felt like Joe Pesci in My Cousin Vinny. It wound up being a lot more than the $65 per room per night ($90 per night) but our 2 meals were included. Huh!? That math works in their favor. My room rate was like an auction where the auctioneer is bidding with my buyers card and the owner of the merchandise is the...
Read moreRecently traveled to Sturgis SD by way of Nebraska with some friends and we were lucky enough to find this great little place with enough vacancies to take us in for the night. It may be small & modest, and not the most modern in terms of accommodation, but the rooms are clean, the water is hot, and the staff if very gracious & welcoming. The little bar downstairs is cool & comfy, serves great food, and our group of weary travelers were quite pleased with our short stay. I'd go back if the opportunity ever presents itself - this was actually one of the highlights of our trip. It seemed the entire little town of Hyannis knew we were there and...
Read moreQuirky old hotel built in the 1890s. I stopped on a cycling tour as there aren't many places to stay (or eat) in Hyannis. Fortunately this had both. The hotel was full for a wedding but the dining room was nearly empty for the same reason. Everybody in town was at the reception. Owner was very personable and fun to chat with - she newly owns the place and we talked about the challenges operating a hotel in such a small town. She cooks a pretty good ribeye and I wish her success in her new venture. Rooms are a bit cramped and could use some updating but overall were fine. Trains from the tracks across the street woke me up a few times, but that's...
