Be Warned!!!||||The campsite is great but the General Store nearby is very shady and is likely scamming tourists!||||There is a guy at the General store 5 minutes down the road from Pete's Lake that will rent you a boat to take out on lake Superior if you like. He doesn't put his stuff online or do reservations.||||During a busy season like when we were there, it felt like we were in luck to find a rental at all. But that's what I believe they want you to think.||||We rented a large pontoon to take out on to Superior, not too many questions asked, it was all very easy and the return went well.||||However, a couple days later, we got a message from the rental guy saying that we damaged the front of the boat and that there was exposed metal that could hurt a child (what?). He then billed our credit card an extra $150 for repairs to a front plate that he said was dented up and had popped out. He said that we'd lied and if we had told him about it he'd have only charged us $50.||||This struck me as odd since I had no reason to think we had damaged the boat in any way. It caused me to look back and check our photos that we took on the boat. It turns out that the front plate had already been all bent up and popped out of the sides and screwed in with metal screws when we rented it.||||It really seemed like he had everything pre-planned and he even stated that he knew that the front pops out easily (as though it had sustained damage many times before) and that he had a standard fee for it. We're convinced that he's running this scam to get extra money out of vacationers with a part that is already damaged on the boat and trying to make them feel like they're in the wrong.||||We are disputing the charge but he placed it on the card before talking with us.||||The campsite is great though! Lots of stuff to do nearby and very clean. Some interesting characters around but we didn't feel like our stuff would walk away so chalk it up to...

Anyone who's ever booked anything online probably thinks that when you pay in full you'll be all set, right? That was not the case here. Boy were we surprised! Our party reserved two campsites near each other here, we checked in, everything seemed to be going well but the camp host approached my uncle (the paying member) to inform him that because we had multipule tents on our campsites, we would be charged by the number of "camping units" and that he basically owed DOUBLE what he'd already paid. The host even said, "we know this isn't on the website" but still insisted on the extra payment. How horrible! We'd driven 6 hours and already set up our tents and gear. They had us in a box and took full advantage.
On top of this, the last night we spent there our group was approached by the camp host at about 10:30 at our bonfire and told in a pretty condescending manner to quiet down. We were talking and laughing, and we're city people so I can concede that we're probably a little louder than what forest folk are used to but we were in no way being excessive with our noise. There was no shouting, we weren't near it. The host informed us in very unpleasant tones that she had the authority to call local law enforcement and have us kicked off the campsite. I really don't know why she thought that was a necessary threat; when she admonished us we were mostly quiet and calmly asked if anyone had complained (they hadn't; she'd simply been able to hear us).
So honestly if you enjoy being double charged and having to use library voices at a bonfire, Pete's Lake campsite is the place for you. And it's an absolute shame because the land is breathtaking, the site is clean and everything else about is great. ...
Read moreThe bathroom was clean and the campsites were nice and spacious with decent privacy between. Some of the sites were on the lake and others were within walking distance of the lake. The reason for only 3 stars is that the host was absent from the time we got there around 4:30pm until 10:15pm and the firewood was not self-serve. It was inconvenient to say the least. Another camper informed us that they had been absent since 11am. A loud, persistent alarm was sounding from the host’s camper for over an hour before we ventured over and turned off their battery charger. Once the host returned at 10:15pm, quiet hours were not enforced. Dogs were barking and people were playing music and having a good loud time. I very rarely leave negative reviews but it was difficult to sleep in a tent with all the noise. The host was pleasant and friendly in the morning and made sure no one was sleeping nearby before turning on his generator. All in all, the campground was nice but it wasn’t a great...
