A group of 8 of us booked rooms in the St George Hotel for the weekend of Aug 4th thru Aug 6th. We booked these rooms well in advance because they were air conditioned. ||Volcano is a lovely little town; however I can’t recommend the St George Hotel at all. I checked in on Fri Aug 4th to the room called Plug. My other friends were also in the Annex Building. Their rooms were fine, but my room Plug’s air conditioner did not work. It was extremely hot that weekend (well over 100 degrees). I went to the desk clerk and she brought me a tiny fan. It didn’t do any good, so I again asked if they could have someone look at the A/C unit in the room. They just brought me a bigger fan. The air conditioner never did work that weekend, the hotel went ahead and charged me full price for my room. Others in my group had nice cool air conditioned rooms; my room was a sweat box. The hotel didn’t offer me any compensation, not a free drink at the bar, or offer to pick up the tab for my breakfast. I did e-mail the hotel and explained I didn’t think it was far that I paid the same full price as my friends, but did not get the same comfortable room. I requested a small discount. They never answered either of my e-mails. ||Our group had a mediocre dinner there, the service was terrible, took forever to get our food and food just so-so. Breakfast Sunday morning was better, the waitress was great, but the food still just so-so. I’m sure there are other hotels in the area that still have the history, but also have much better customer service.||I just can’t recommend the St....

Read moreWe were really looking forward to staying in this historic hotel but were disappointed after our one night there. Bottom line - this hotel is being neglected and is not living up to its potential. For example, our large room on the second floor (with private bath, balcony, and nice views) was under-furnished and uncomfortable. This spacious unit is a place where we should have wanted to spend time, but the two old chairs and worn-out bed just didn't cut it. There was no television (although there were loose cables hanging in the corner), no radio, no couch, no table....well, you get the picture. We had a broken window in our room (cracked glass) and none of the windows looked like they had been cleaned in the last century. The grounds were overgrown and there were junk piles on the main porches and in places around the property. A good groundskeeper, a few coats of paint, a good deep cleaning, new carpets, and new furnishings could make this place shine. There is a demand for properties such as this in gold country and I only hope the hotel is rescued by someone with a good business sense in the future. We did not eat in the restaurant after seeing the prices for food...
