My husband and I decided to stay at Hummingbird Estate in celebration of our 11th wedding anniversary. We booked a single night in their Japanese Maple Suite.
As instructed by our pre-arrival email, we headed into the tasting room to get checked in. From the moment we stepped into the building, we were ignored. A small group of waitstaff looked at us and most of them promptly walked away to serve tasting room customers. No hellos, no waves. Thankfully a pleasant young woman did stick around and get us checked in, but it was extremely clear that she knew nothing about the B&B side of things. Questions we asked elicited either unclear answers or ‘I don’t know’. She got us to our room but didn’t know what time they stopped serving food and left to go find an answer. She never returned. I had to go online to find the tasting room hours. This lack of customer service continued throughout our entire stay. We had to return to the tasting room to get our breakfast reservations squared away, but were yet again met with a staff member that wasn’t trained on any of those procedures. We were sincerely unsure of whether or not we were going to get breakfast at the time we wanted or at all. The only source of information offered to us were printouts in a folder in the room and that’s not customer service. Guests shouldn’t have to dig through a folder to find information important to their stay. Thankfully our breakfast did arrive when we requested, but yet again the customer service was lacking. There was no smiling face or asking how our sleep was—just a harried employee who clearly wanted to move onto the next task.
The suite was a cozy, relaxing space. The room was clean enough, but it was not thoroughly clean. The floors looked unswept (dust and dirt) and there was dust on the fabric headboard and in most of the nooks and crannies of the rooms. I wasn’t searching for these things, I merely noticed them during our stay. Much more egregious are the lack of amenities that allow guests to sleep comfortably. The room has a large number of windows, and yes there are shades on them but they are only light-filtering at best. For some reason there was a ridiculous amount of light outside all night (not sure if path lighting or what) that made it impossible for us to sleep soundly. My husband had to resort to covering his head with a pillow and we both were awoken by morning light at 5:30 am. It was a terrible night of sleep. When other guests left or entered their rooms the sound was very loud and clear so it sounded as if they were literally in our room. I’m aware of the age of the property, but a warning of the potential of outside noise would have been appreciated.
The Hummingbird Estate website claims the guest suites are ‘generously appointed’. There wasn’t a single box of tissues in the entire suite. It is telling that such a basic necessity was completely missing. The website also said that ‘wine tasting included with your reservation’ but the only thing offered was a card to trade in for a can a wine. That isn’t a ‘wine tasting’. The website should be updated to reflect that change.
Our experience was disappointing. With the many glowing reviews and all the hype on your web platforms we were expecting a true luxury stay with excellent customer service, especially at $300 per night. After being ignored for our entire stay and having a terrible night of sleep, our money would have been better spent staying at a chain hotel. The luxury B&B experience that we travelled for was completely absent.
I reached out via email once we returned home to voice our complaints and ask for a partial refund. I sent the email on June 14th and received a reply on June 24th. It was a very sparse apology email and my name was misspelled. They did indeed refund part of our stay, and I’m...
Read moreWe live in Park City, Utah, a town built around tourism…so we deeply understand the dynamics of hospitality and guest experience. After flying into Medford and driving to Mount Shasta for our daughter’s wedding, we were still glowing from four unforgettable days filled with love, celebration, and the blending of families. As a thoughtful surprise, my husband booked us a one-night stay at Hummingbird Estate so we could unwind together before heading home.
When we arrived, we were greeted by a kind young man who was all smiles and genuinely welcoming (5 stars for him). He gave us two wine flight tickets and let us know we had about an hour left to enjoy a tasting. The property itself is old and charming…perhaps not quite our usual style, but we were excited to soak in the atmosphere and make the most of it.
Unfortunately, our experience took a sharp turn in the tasting room. We asked to try the sparkling Chardonnay, something highly recommended to us by a local restaurant manager and were met by a woman with short brown hair whose demeanor was shockingly rude and cold. She made it abundantly clear we were an inconvenience, even though we arrived well within the posted hours. Her attitude was so off-putting, it completely shifted the energy of our stay.
Once she realized we were overnight guests, her tone did a complete 180, suddenly overly sweet and fake, which somehow felt even more uncomfortable. It was disappointing, and honestly disheartening, to go from such a joyful celebration to being treated like we were an annoyance.
We didn’t make a fuss. We didn’t ask for a refund. We simply left the key on the bed, quietly checked out, and went down the road to the Jacksonville Inn in hopes of continuing our joyful weekend somewhere that felt as warm as the celebration we had...
Read moreIf I could, I would give this place more than 5 stars! My husband and I stayed at this cute bed and breakfast for the night of our wedding and the next night too. Honestly, we couldn’t have chosen a better place. It is family owned and the people there make you feel so special and included in their little slice of heaven. The family that lives on property is so welcoming and you can tell they truly love what they do. The service is impeccable and everyone we interacted with was kind and sweet. The room we stayed in was the sequoia suite and this was the perfect room for getting ready for my wedding. It was spacious, very comfortable bed, cozy, updated bathrooms, great natural lighting and AMAZING views of the gardens. I am quite of obsessed with every detail of that room! Every morning we were greeted with smiles for breakfast. We were absolutely blown away with how gourmet breakfast was both mornings. Everything is prepared whenever you’re ready to mosey on down from a great nights sleep. So fresh! On top of the beautiful rooms, people and property, this place is also a winery!! If you stay in a room, you get a free glass of wine which can be enjoyed on their outdoor patio overlooking the rogue valley and guests (or the family) battling it out on the pickle ball court. All the wine we had was absolutely amazing as well, it wasn’t just good, it was great from the Pinot’s to the Tempranillo’s. I could honestly go on and on about this place, I never wanted to leave! My husband and I will absolutely be back for many anniversaries...
