We spent 5 lovely nights in mid-October at Jim Thorpe Camping Resort. Our only critique is that this campground is quite tight, even with our little 20-foot travel trailer (i.e., our picnic table was 3-feet from our neighbor’s sewer hose and the end of our awning was about 10 feet from touching our neighbor’s camper). For context, we were at site 61 when looking at the campground map. ||That being said, the trees are big, beautiful, and provide ample shade for each site. The trees were especially stunning when we stayed because they were at their peak color change. The campground is also just a short 2-mile drive from the historic town of Jim Thorpe, which is chock full of cute shops and delicious restaurants. Jim Thorpe was having their immensely popular Fall Festival on the weekend days that we camped, with parking available only on the outskirts of town and shuttle busses being provided for attendees. For folks who enjoy hiking, you can skip the expensive parking and shuttles. On one side of the campground, you can pick up the Switchback Trail (make a left once you cross the pedestrian bridge out of the campground) and walk about 2.4 scenic miles into town for the festivities. We hiked into town on a Friday morning (not an official Fall Festival day), and the town was still packed – not anything like it was over the weekend though, we heard. If you instead make a right onto Switchback Trail, you will have a lovely 4-mile loop trail to Mauch Chunk Lake. There are lots of other things to do nearby too if you would like to use the campground more like a base camp; just check out the “Things To Do” link on the campground’s website. ||Even though the campground was at or near capacity over the weekend we stayed, guests were respectful of quiet hours. It was a bit noisy during the daytime, with everyone sure sounding like they were having a great time - GOOD noise of folks laughing and children playing! Apparently, local scouts turn the campground pavilion into a haunted house during the last 2 weekends of October. We had no idea (no one told us when we checked in) and wouldn’t have known if we didn’t walk our dogs by the pavilion. That looked like a fun haunted house for the young ones. ||The campground store was bright, clean, and well-stocked. The staff members were friendly and gave us great advice about the trails and things to do in the opposite direction of the fall festival. We are glad we chose Jim Thorpe Camping Resort for this season’s...
Read moreWe had a nice time tent camping here. Beautiful area and close to town. Lots to see. CONS: The pool/tent site bathroom was filthy, cobwebs and bugs galore. A large spider was devouring a moth right in front of me while I sat on the toilet!! And the tent sites were on top of each other and very rocky. (Lots of prep work before tarp lay out) PROS: The office bathroom/shower was clean. Cleanest shower stall at a campsite I've ever seen. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The resort has a rule about being too noisy and playing music too loud. The tenters next to us were very loud until 1:00 a.m. and there were alcohol containers all over the ground the next morning. We did not know that there was a different phone number to call after hours, so we suffered through their rudeness until they passed out drunk!! In the morning we went over to the office to inform management and were told that there were other campers who complained about that site as well. We were assured that as soon as the owner got there, the rude campers were going to be evicted!! We went to town for breakfast and when we got back the rude campers were gone! What a relief knowing that we were not going to have to suffer another night of their inconsiderate behavior!! Management said that everyone who checks in signs a contract with the rules typed out on the contract. One of the first rules is QUIET HOURS ARE FROM 11:00 PM TO 7:00 AM, RESPECT OTHER CAMPERS NO LOUD MUSIC ALCOHOL USE IS ALLOWED BUT BE DISCREET DOGS MUST BE KEPT LEASHED AT ALL TIMES. VIOLATORS WILL NOT BE TOLERATED, THEY WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE IMMEDIATELY. That's pretty easy to understand. Thank you management. We will be...
Read moreThe owners seriously need some help. Unbelievably rude and arrogant. We arrived for a weekend stay, were shown to our cabin, and proceeded to unload our gear. This was our third time camping in Jim Thorpe, and never had an issue thus far. This time, however, was different.
From the moment we got there, it felt like we were being treated with more scrutiny. Dirty looks from the residents, staff driving by our cabin (specifically) multiple times in order to keep an eye on us, etc. Not even an hour had gone by, and we were being screamed at by staff and told to pack up in 15 minutes or else cops would arrive (they apparently have a rule saying they are allowed to kick you out for any reason, day or night, with no refund). We tried being apologetic, saying that this was all a huge misunderstanding and we would be happy to sort everything out. They didn’t let us get a single word in and proceeded to say all sorts of nasty/hurtful stuff to us in front of the other campers who were trying to check in. Talk about a lack of awareness.
After being embarrassed like that, we decided it wasn’t worth it anymore and loaded up our cars. We drove almost 3 hours to get there, and the owner wouldn’t even let us regroup in the PARKING LOT. Our group told him we were just looking for another place to stay. His response was, “I don’t care, that’s not my problem. Get the f— off my property. Have a safe trip”.
Save yourself the time, gas, and headache and please choose a different campground if you don’t want to be hassled/scammed out of your money. No one deserves to be treated/spoken to that way. Plenty of other...
