I LOVED this retro motel, it reminded me of the places where my mom and dad took my sister and I when we were kids. My husband and I stayed in the east wing, I think the west wing had some storm damage a little bit ago and it's still being put back together.....don't let its appearance put you off. We had a room with two queens. It was very spacious and clean. There were two sinks, one in the bathroom area and one in the sleeping area. This motel hasn't been open very long, but you can tell that the owners have put a lot of love and time into restoring it. I loved the special seating in front of our room and I enjoyed looking at the horsey swing set. There were a lot of nice touches in the room too and the towels were probably the thickest out of all the places I've stayed in the last two weeks. When I called the office (on my cell......they don't have phones in the rooms and I was too lazy to walk to the office) to inquire about a fan Corey quickly brought one to our room. Very good customer service. The only thing that would have made my stay better would be if there had been more than one trash receptacle in the room. The main room had a trash can and that was it........it would have been handy if there were one in the "bathroom" area as well. I also had a hard time figuring out how to work the shower faucet.......until my husband pointed out a sign on the wall outside of the bathroom. Personally, I think if there were a little sign in the bathroom (maybe on the edge of the tub) with a rubber ducky sitting on it, maybe non observant people like me would have an easier time seeing it. Just an idea. Seriously, I loved this place and I'm so glad my...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreReserved a room for myself and my two teen kids. Easy check-in process. Room was clean, except for a couple of carpet stains by the vanity. Beds were comfortable, TV worked during a storm, water was hot and had good pressure. Room was large with three beds. AC worked fine.
Front ventilation window was boarded up when we arrived. Rear window didn't have a screen. Not a big deal, since a storm blew in during the evening. It's an older property, so it has a little wear and tear. But, I did not see any safety or health concerns--other than the microwave, coffee pot, and AC on extension cords and ground plug adapters. Since it's an older building, it doesn't have many three prong/ground or GFCI receptacles.
There's not a lot around the motel, other than a travel plaza, a few restaurants, and a couple of grocery stores that close early in the evening. The Sunset Grill serves a great breakfast and has excellent service. Their coffee is just okay, though.
Beside cleanliness, WiFi strength and stability is a very important thing for my teens when it comes to staying at hotels. My kids did not complain about internet access the entire time we were at Grandpa Joe's. We stayed at highbrow hotels in Portland, OR during our trip that had unstable and slow WiFi. You'd think that trendy places would at least have great WiFi reception. Grandpa Joe's was a third to half the price of those hotels, and had excellent WiFi.
If we were in the area again, we'd stay at Grandpa Joe's. Good basic joint to rest...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMany of the reviews were so great and we love to try different types of hotels/motels, we gave it a try. While one could tell there was a female decorating touch to it and it was basically clean with fluffy towels, it went downhill from there.||We reserved a king size bed, but when we got there and mentioned that we had a service dog, we received a "pet room". Instead of a king size bed, we received a queen bed. The room was musty smelling, the carpet was bunched up in places as it was so old. The air conditioner unit in the bathroom area was surrounded by white duct tape. There was a sign stuck on the microwave that you need to turn off the space heater (a stand-alone unit) and/or the air conditioner if you use the microwave so that the breakers won't trip. As many others have mentioned, some of the outlets are only two-prong outlets which definitely need to be updated. The view was terrible as well, but that was a minor issue for us. The room keys are regular keys which concerned us as those can be easily duplicated and there wasn't a deadbolt on the door in case someone tried to come in the room.||For $100, I expected a little bit better room. I realize that they're trying to update it, but I definitely would not go back there. There are many other places to stay (such as King's Inn in Kennebec) that, for the price, are better, cleaner, ands some even...
