We were visiting a friend in the area in early May and needed a place to park the RV for six nights. Log Lake Campground was our choice as the price was right and it was close to the friends we were visiting.
This is a no frills county owned park with ten full hook-up RV sites. We had one of the full hook-ups. All of the other sites are electric only some with on site water. The park was mostly empty when we stayed here. There were a few tent campers and one other RV plus the caretaker who lives onsite next to the office. There is no wifi at this park but cell phone coverage is more than adequate. Off-air TV reception is very good with all major networks available. Be careful if you rely on your GPS to guide you to the park. You want to use E Log Lake Rd. This is a straight shot to the park entrance off of MI 612. Our GPS picked the correct route but Google Maps wanted to take us in W Log Lake Rd which would have been a real hassle with our class A towing a car.
The park is located just a few miles from downtown Kalkaska and it's about a thirty minute drive to Traverse City, MI. There are a number of restaurants in Kalkaska plus a grocery store, drug store, hardware store auto parts store, a nice laundromat, and more. Log Lake Campground, as its name might suggest, has a large lake that can be used for swimming (no lifeguard), boating, and fishing. The park is well maintained by the on site caretaker. There is a camp store that is open during the day but we didn't spend any time there. There are public showers and bathrooms. You need to purchase tokens from the camp store to access the showers in the bathhouse. Both the showers and bathrooms were very clean.
We have only two gripes. First, the entire campground is built on sand. Don't panic, it's not soft sand like at the beach. It's a hard packed sand. We arrived after a huge rain storm and there was no problem navigating our class A to our site. The problem with the sand is that it sticks to everything, in particular your shoes. So plan on dragging sand into your RV or tent or car. The sites could benefit from a stone base. That would mitigate some of the sand problem. The other complaint was the water pressure. When we first hooked up to water the pressure gauge read five pounds. It eventually creeped up to twenty pounds. There was a backflow preventer on the faucet and I suspected that might be the problem as I've seen that issue at other campgrounds. Here the backflow preventer is pinned to the faucet so I couldn't remove it so see if it was causing the low pressure problem. I did speak to the caretaker about it and he said that it was caused by air in the water lines and that the problem should go away. It never did. At best we saw twenty pounds but it frequently dropped to near zero. We used the water to fill our tank and ran off of our pump. There was never enough water pressure to take a shower in the RV and there were times that evening filling the tank was difficult. Sometimes you couldn't even wash dishes or fill the toilet. Basically we paid for a full hook-up but only got two thirds of a hook-up because of the non existent water pressure.
This is a decent park with reasonable rates in a very quiet location. The sand and the low water pressure were a negative. If we came back, we could live with the sand but the water pressure issue was...
Read moreI spent a week here with a friend and my daughter. 30' toy hauler 5th wheel, full hookup site. We brought a medium size dog and my chihuahua. Never had any issues with other folks or their animals. Lots of big old trees for shade. Those inhibit certain campsites a bit, yet all-in-all there's a lot of room to adjust your camper for most sites. Pay showers are a buck per 5 minute token. Good, clean, separate room, spacious shower stalls. Clean restrooms. The ORV path is accessible from the campground! Just leave the campground on your dirtbike or 4 wheeler. Perhaps a snowmobile. Make a right. Go to the STOP sign. Make another right. Follow the road for 1/4 mile or so and look for a dirt road that will be on your left just before the warning signs telling you to go no further because it's a private road, dead end. Follow that trail and use your phone or GPS to locate the nearby Leetsville trailhead, but don't forget to mind your way back. Look for the blue street sign that reads Sunbird Ln, Private for heading back to Log Lake campground. That, along with 10 full hook-up sites. nice beach and playground for my daughter (age 10), AND a full 18 net disc golf course within walking distance of the campground, makes this campground a great choice for a hidden gem of a spot to camp within 15 minutes from Torch Lake. The horseshoe pits are neglected last I saw. 1 pin per each set of pits was missing. Volleyball court had a solid net pre hung. There's also pavilions nearby for rent. One in the campground and one across the road from it, near the disc...
Read moreI have to say that this is one of the worst campgrounds that we have ever stayed at, management is very rude we no more than pulled and they came over and told us that check in time wasn't until 3pm,even though we were a day late, he didn't bother to check. Then he proceeded to run his lawnmower on the beach to clean it and we were not allowed to be on it. Tried to get tokens to take showers and he told us that he only had a couple tokens left we would have to wait till the next day when he opened up at 10 am. Management complained that we were being to loud at 11 o'clock and told us that he would call the cops and have us removed. Management is very confrontational I would not recommend staying at this place. If I could put a negative review I would. I advise to stay at a different place if you have a large...
