Polihale State park is further out and you need to take a dirt road which I would recommend some type of a 4x4 vehicle we rented a jeep so we were good to go.
The dirt road is about 4 miles long to get to the state park off the main road, beautiful birds, wild pigs cross the road so drive carefully.
This beach is breathtaking it reminds me of the Oregon coast but warm, the Na Pali mountain range runs along the edge of it an man what a gorgeous site it is.
This state park like all the others has showers, trash service, however they request if the trash cans are overflowing be willing to pack out what you pack in, for $6 a night respect the parks here.
They offer clean toilets, drinking water and covered areas with picnic tables.
Again, I can’t imagine a better place for a camping trip then Kauai they have the most beautiful state parks, if you choose Kauai for your next camping trip as we did, please be respectful and pick up trash even if it’s not yours, if you see toilet paper in the ground in the bathrooms pick it up don’t just let it stay there, supplies cost money respect the value and do your part help when you can.
The state park websites are hard to navigate so when we return home we will be sending money to them as a extra donation to help with the...
Read moreThe road in is like something out of a war zone. We had a seriously modified 4x4 and it still took 30+ min to get out there. Lower sedans will get tossed around and scraped up bumpers etc, but I saw them bouncing down the road with some distraught occupants.
Don't be tempted to drive on the beach itself too. Clearly people do it, but we saw someone stuck and high centered himself who needed a real rescue vehicle. The last bit into the campground is sandy, but not deep or scary at all in most places. If you get stuck, you were being foolish.
Once you get out there though, it's the best. Great camping spots too, although need reservations, which were never checked. Toilets and a tepid water shower pole were a big plus. Really dark at night, you can see more stars than you likely...
Read moreCamping Area 4 has concrete parking spot for vehicles with disabled permit. There is a picnic table and ocean view as well as nice flat concrete path to the bathroom/outdoor shower(shared with Camping Area 3). The rest of about half a dozen unmarked sites cannot be accessed with a vehicle - park and carry your gear there (not good for campers/roof top tenters).
Bathroom is shared with Camping Area 3, is in decent shape and fairly clean. Shower is outdoor without any enclosure. Trash is picked up daily. Separate bins for recycling.
Remember that camping permit is required, although, nobody seemed to be checking.
Beware of thorny branches and lots of thorny pieces on the ground, hiding in the sand - wear...
