I have never left a bad review on anything before, but this hotel pushed me to my absolute limit. I booked a suite for 3 nights. I arrived and checked in (paid at the property) and went to my room. I could immediately tell that this was not the suite that you would expect from the pictures, but I honestly didn't care. The room was old, big deal. I didn't expect the Ritz. Then I noticed the bed. There was a LARGE dirt stain right in the middle of the duvet cover. I went down to the front desk and showed them the picture of the stain. They said they could send someone to change the sheets but I said I didn't really trust that the rest of the room was cleaned properly so would just like a different room. They were out of suites, which I honestly couldn't care less about, so I took a King. I asked if I could be credited the rate difference between the two since I had already paid for the suite and I was told to reach out to the GM the following morning for assistance. All good. Again, I never asked for anything to be comp'd, just simply the correction in rate so I was only paying for the room type that I was staying in. The next morning I ordered room service, which took 1.5hrs and came in togo containers (which was surprising for a 4star hotel), but again whatever, I didn't care. However, when I opened the lid to my espresso there was what I will call a "body" hair. I send that image to the same number they asked me to send the image of the dirty bed to. I call downstairs to speak to the GM, ask instructed, and am sent to voicemail so I leave a message with my cell and explain why I was calling. I was very nice and said that I was fine with the king room and the bed was comfortable. All I was asking for was the rate correction (since I paid for the Suite), and to not be charged for my room service since I obviously wasn't going to drink that. I didn't even bring up the fact that there was hair in the shower as well so that was clearly not cleaned well either. Again, ONLY wanted the rate correction. The day goes by and I never hear anything. The next day goes by and I never hear anything so I stop by the front desk after I was done with my work functions. The front desk lets me know that the GM is gone for the day but they would alert the manager on duty. She was currently dealing with another guest, but she would reach out as soon as she was done. She never reached out. Instead, she has the nice front desk worker call me to say that she can give me 10,000 Marriott points, but no room correction. Obviously that is not okay and not even remotely equivalent to the difference in price. I let the very nice front desk person know. Again, the Manager on duty refused to ever speak to me. They tried to claim that they couldn't adjust the room rate since I went through booking. However, Booking contacted them to let them know that was not the case since I paid on property and they gave them the green light to correct the rate (they had already changed the room on site, just not the rate, how convenient). I have escalated this matter to Corporate and will be alerting my bank to refuse the charge since I did not receive the product that I was charged for. DO NOT stay here until they get rid of their current management. Luis, the Security worker and the kind gentlemen on Friday night were all amazing. Management is absolutely atrocious, unprofessional and inept. I cannot wrap my head around not only never speaking to a guest after such horrendous occurrences, but to also refuse to simply correct the charge so they are only paying for the room that they had to stay in since the more expensive room was not cleaned properly and no others were available. That is literally ALL I ASKED FOR. The issues I mentioned to the hotel : dirty bed and a body hair in my espresso cup. The issues that I didn't even mention : hair in the shower, a bug crawled on my face in the middle of the night, the room and floor smelling like mildew. Issues resolved : ZERO

Very clean rooms, beautiful modern drapes covering the hallway windows. The rooms are modern and gorgeous. I love the barn access doors to the bathroom and the lovely glass doors to the shower and the black tile in the shower. The frosted, illuminated mirror is beautiful with the setting that is around it. The beds are plush and comfortable. The chaise lounger has a bed underneath it(the room we were staying did). The color coordination look so great together in the rooms. There is a fridge in the rooms and the microwave is downstairs to be used by anyone in the hotel. This gorgeous hotel is located in such a great hidden location right off of I-270 and a stones throw from downtown Bethesda, Chevy Chase, and Walter Reed Military hospital. I’ve been passing by this road (for a few years since living in MD)and had no idea this hotel existed. The Cooper Mill’s restaurant (shares space with Avis rental car &. the Marriott) has a lovely atmosphere and beautiful to the eyes. The menu looks great and the food is delicious and served with a genuine smile. Always a great night to be had. Happy sleeping! Update: 15DEC.2023 Apparently there is a certain time in the evening and early morning rooms have HOT water along with this the hot water fluctuates as you bath or shower. The sink takes 20 minutes to barely be warm. This is the situation with rooms in area 101-122. Happy sleeping! Update to last year’s update: 19July2024 The pool area has a different look and vibe altogether. Simply posh and always welcoming. I love the new look outside around the pool. You’ll see in my pics what I’m referring to. The water in room area 1010-1024 was great and there was no wait on hot water during the times of 4pm(ish)and 8:30pm. Always a great night to be had. Thank you so much! Happy sleeping!

The pros: shuttles, good location, clean and modern looking rooms, nice shampoo and conditioner. The cons: hidden fees everywhere. There is an extra $19 charge for parking, $13 charge for wifi, and $22 per person for breakfast. I have never had a hotel charge my extra for parking and wifi. What place doesn't have wifi? And, what hotel doesn't include parking? How am I supposed to get to the hotel- walking? I was mollified that the wifi was waived if I signed up for a membership card. But the priceline website I viewed it on said it had wifi and parking. So it was a big surprise to find out at the front desk checking in. The rooms were clean and I enjoyed the shampoo that had citrus, mint, eucaluptus, and other floral scents. I was quite worried that they would try to slap extra costs on me without knowing so overall I did not enjoy my stay. I think it would be ok if you knew all these hidden things beforehand. The breakfast was amazing. The omelettes were freshly made and the chicken sausages were great too.

We spent 1 night at the Bethesda Marriott in Bethesda, MD this week. We traveled to Bethesda this week both for work and to attend the Marriott Bonvoy 5th Anniversary Celebration at Marriott HQ. I found a low, 29,000 point redemption for a King room which was all we needed for a single night, and the hotel was only 5 minutes from Marriott Downtown HQ where the event was being held and where we would spend the next 2 nights. This was our first visit to this hotel. We chose it over the Courtyard Bethesda that was 23,000 points for the same night, for the full service restaurant, M Club as well as the 4.3 rating on the Marriott website. We would be arriving late, at 7pm, as the location is about a 6 hour drive from our location.||Arriving at the hotel it looks like many other Marriott hotels. While I don’t have any lobby photos, it is a large lobby that has reception, a good sized restaurant, M Club, the fitness center, as well as hallways to other buildings, rooms and meeting spaces. This is a large hotel that has an airport hotel feel to it. Aside from a high floor, I would say that we received the room I booked – no real upgrade to speak of for this stay. We were only booked for this 1 night stay that was very close to the event. It also gave my wife all day Thursday to relax at the property and get ready for the evenings event at Marriott HQ.||Our room was modern Marriott, having been upgraded sometime before 2020 with current style room furnishings, solid surface fake wood floors (I like these a LOT over full carpet), a nice 2nd desk/table that would be useful from the couch, a safe, slightly noisy fridge and an updated bathroom. While the shower was new, the rest of the bathroom felt like it was where the hotel decided to save some money and repurpose the old flooring, sink, counter, toilet and dropped ceiling with newer ceiling tiles in this small bathroom.||After getting settled in the room, we headed down for dinner at Coopers Mills – the hotels Farm to Table restaurant. The menu had a good selection of options – enough options that anyone dining should be able to find 1 or 2 options on the menu. This is a plus as we do find many hotel restaurants that don’t have a varied enough menu for everyone in the party – even when it’s just us as a party of two that are not seafood eaters.||We had some questions about the menu, and the spiciness of the Moco Saltado that my wife eventually ordered. Our server was fantastic – checking with the kitchen about the meal, tasting the sauce and even offering to bring a small sample. We started with Korean Short Rib Sliders and a couple of specialty drinks from the menu. The sliders and drinks were a great start to our dinner. Unfortunately the actual meals left a lot to be desired.||I don’t know if it was a bad night, getting late in the kitchen (it was open 2 hours after we ordered) or I who knows what – our meals didn’t look like or taste like something that’s “farm to table” – it was more Sodexo to reheat to table. Whether it was my microwaved, colorless, tasteless veggies in place of “Root Vegetables”, mushy rice and dry chicken or the french fries that were wok seared in place of “Potato” and the cut up Ribeye in place of the “Peruvian Beef Tenderloin” in the Moco Saltado – dinner was not good at all. We almost never send plates back to the kitchen, but the Moco Saltado was so bad and so NOT what the menu described it as – we just sent it back. To my surprise, that meal was not on the final bill. I had not asked for it to be taken off, but when the bill was presented to me our server had already removed it. This was just another great example of the excellent service she provided to us that night.||Aside from a mildly noisy fridge in our room (like so many are), we slept well in the King sized bed. Unfortunately when I got up in the morning, I discovered there was NO hot water in the room – even after running the shower for more than 5 minutes. I put a Kevin Harvick hat on and headed down for breakfast in the M Club. On my way I stopped at the front desk to ask about the hot water. When I stepped up to the desk, there were 2 other people complaining about no hot water. There were 2 front desk agents talking to customers, and I did inform them that we had no hot water either BUT and with a big caveat that they acknowledged. I asked them to NOT send anyone from maintenance up to the room at this time as my wife was still sleeping. It was about 7:30 am and I would let them know on my way out, after breakfast, when the best time to come up to the room.||Breakfast in the M Club was very good, and like many M Clubs, is served from the buffet in the restaurant. The breakfast options were good and kept freshly restocked. During our stay an omelette chef was also available for breakfast. There was a good selection of fresh fruit, breads/bagels/muffins/pastry’s as well as oatmeal. The M Club has a working coffee machine, and breakfast had typical push carafe’s as well as carafe’s of juice – not single serve plastic bottle juices.||After breakfast I headed back to the room hoping the hot water would be back on, otherwise it was gonna’ be a very quick, cold shower. I cracked the room door open as quietly as possible, knowing my wife was still asleep – well to my surprise she was not. Minutes after I told the desk about our hot water problem, someone from maintenance entered the room while she was sleeping. As you can imagine, neither of us was happy. I jumped in for a brief, super cold shower – and left for work.||I stopped back at the front desk on my way out – expressing my severe disappointment in maintenance entering the room. I left it at that and let them know that now they could call up anytime to get access to the room if needed. Much to my dismay, when I returned just before 3pm, there was still no hot water in the room. We packed up the room and headed down to leave.||On our way out we stopped at the front desk again – to check out, but also to provide feedback about our stay, which was honestly not very good. Our interaction with the front desk upon check out was another example of both great training and empowerment of staff. Upon hearing about our experience with the hot water and maintenance entering the room, the agent immediately apologized and offered 5,000 points in compensation. While our interaction was very professional, I did wish to express my feedback to the manager. It took less than a minute for the Asst. Operations Manage and the Rooms Operation Manager to come to the desk – interestingly enough, the Rooms Operations Manager was 1 of the 2 front desk agents I spoke to at 7:30am.||They both acknowledged the hotels failures in both the problem with the hot water, but even more so with maintenance entering the room. During this conversation I did something I’ve never done in 992 nights – and that was to ask for my room stay to be refunded. It was at this point that the Rooms Operation Manager informed me that she had already awarded me 25,000 points for the mentioned failures. On top of that, without even mentioning anything about our previous evenings dinner in the restaurant, the Asst. Operations Manager noticed the restaurant charge on our folio and gave us a $50 credit towards it. I had no intent to seek compensation for dinner, as it was IMO, resolved the previous evening. I can say that I was very pleasantly surprised by these immediate actions and in no uncertain words, let them know that I appreciated their professionalism and resolution.||Yes things can and do break in hotels. None of my complaints were about the hot water being out. The hotel was caught off guard and was working to resolve it. My complaints were entirely around the service failures and resolved to our complete satisfaction with a pleasant, professional conversation with the hotel team.||I can say that while our stay was not the best, and we’re unlikely to return to the hotel as there are many Marriott options in the area – the professionalism of the staff we encountered was excellent and the staff should be acknowledged for that.||For perspective I am a Marriott Bonvoy Ambassador...

UPDATE: Manager Derek Vanbrakle took excellent steps to address the poor experience we had and refunded all our expenses. He also went above and beyond to extend some additional service to make it up to my sister going through cancer treatment to ensure there was an opportunity for them to create and deliver better service for her on a different day. We all know how difficult the service industry is but he demonstrated 5 star managerial resolution etiquette in our opinion.

Disappointing and Unprofessional Experience at Marriott Bethesda. Loyalty Means Nothing Here

I’m currently at the Marriott Bethesda and feel compelled to warn others after an incredibly disappointing and unprofessional experience. My sister, who is undergoing cancer treatment, and I booked a poolside cabana for a peaceful, restorative day. Instead, we encountered poor service, disturbing behavior from staff, and a serious credit card security issue, all of which left us feeling disrespected and ignored.

Shortly after arriving, we noticed several managers preparing a roped-off area of the pool with extra cabanas and chairs, clearly reserved for a private VIP group. Staff even removed umbrellas from the public area, limiting shade for regular guests, to serve this group better. We later learned this was for Katrin Mueller, Senior Director of Loyalty and Marketing for Marriott International. Regular paying guests, including us, were clearly not the priority.

We placed a simple drink order, but after more than 40 minutes, nothing had arrived. I called the restaurant and front desk repeatedly, no answer. Finally, I waved down a manager who was doting on the private group. Instead of helping, he rudely asked about my sister’s eye (a private medical condition) and questioned whether we were part of “the Katrin Mueller group.” When we said no, he brushed us off, saying he’d “check on it,” and walked away without concern.

Things got even worse. Our server disappeared for over an hour with our credit card for each order. We had no way to track them down, and no staff member could tell us where they were. That is a serious security risk and completely unacceptable at any hotel, let alone one under the Marriott brand.

When our drinks finally arrived, nearly an hour later, it was abundantly clear that guests like us are not valued when Marriott executives are around. My sister is a Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite member who has shown loyal patronage to this brand for years. After today, she will be taking that loyalty elsewhere.

This experience was unprofessional, invasive, and frankly humiliating, especially for someone fighting cancer who deserved a moment of peace. I will be sharing this experience with friends at New York Magazine and through my professional and personal networks to help others avoid this location.

Shame on you, Marriott Bethesda. Prioritizing corporate VIPs over guest dignity, service, and security is not...
