I’m a camper here at Vista and for anyone who has had anything not good to say about it is wrong. It has taught me so much about manners and it helps us tennagers learn how great it can be just to get off our phones and be free for 2 weeks. Ms. Becky is the cook and she has the best food, and what makes it even better is that we know she cooks it with love and for us to enjoy with all of our friends. At vista I make so many new friends each year and build relationships that will last me a lifetime. The activities choices are endless and you can find something for everyone to enjoy. To me and my friends we think the no air conditioning is no problem because we have our nice fans to bring and most of the time we’re outside playing anyways. The tribes or “teams” that we have are such a unique touch to camp. It is not displayed in a disrespectful or insentive way at all. It teaches us how to work as a team and what healthy competition is all about. I look forward to the dance and carnival each year because we get to spend time with the Rio Vista boys and meet new friends from there as well. The best part about Vista Camps? The traditions! The camp has been around so long and you get to know the family and directors so well that you feel so apart of camp. People come from all over the states who experienced camp in the 90’s and nothing has changed. It is so traditional and welcoming. Camp is home to so many and we would never know what to do without it. We...
Read moreCamp Sierra Vista changed my life in the most positive ways - twice! Once as a camper when I was a child and again as a teenaged/young adult counselor. As a camper, I first attended Sierra Vista at the age of 10. I arrived for my 1.5 week session such a shy child that I could barely look people in the eyes and tended to hide in my books, talking only to family and schoolmates I'd known my whole life. At camp I found new activities that I could perform well (although I am not at all athletic), made so many new friends and, according to my father, came back a changed child. I attended for five summers total, learning leadership and technical skills (horseback riding, archery, etc.), while building my self-confidence.
The learning and growth continued as a young adult counselor, teaching me leadership, how to work as a team, how to be a good steward of an organization's culture, and other workplace skills that have positively impacted my career to this day.
Camp Sierra Vista can be a transformational experience for any young girl, especially those open to building new communities, learning new skills, and with an open heart and spirit. Sending me to camp was truly one of the best things my parents ever did for me and I can't wait to send my own children to Sierra...
Read moreThis is my daughter’s third year at Camp Sierra Vista, and it has truly become a part of who she is. Each summer she returns more confident, more grounded, and full of a joy. This camp has given her courage, a new perspective, and a second home she holds close to her heart.
She is a proud Chickasaw for life and counts down the days until she is back under the oak trees, soaking in the big Texas sky and swimming in the Guadalupe River. The friendships she has made here run deep, and I have no doubt she will stay connected with her camp sisters for life. One of the most special parts is knowing she has this second group of friends to lean on. If things get tough with school friends, she knows she can text her camp friends for support and understanding.
A huge shout out to the counselors, who are absolutely incredible. They are strong, kind, and fun, and have made such a lasting impact on her. She looks up to them so much and already dreams of becoming a counselor herself one day.
Camp Sierra Vista is more than just a summer camp. It is a place where girls grow in confidence, character, and lifelong connection. I am forever grateful that my daughter gets to be part of something...
