Clubhouse Beach — Hotel in Key Largo

The Coastal Prairie Trail in December of '13 was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! The 6.5 mile hike from Flamingo Campground out to Clubhouse Beach was one of the most gorgeous short trails I have ever hiked. The mud was perfect, the dry spots relaxing, the swamp on the approach was tough to go through but well worth the reward. When I made it the other side of the swamp I stopped to take a breather and was peering down at the water... when I looked up there was a black silhouette standing there waving from the top of the beach, as if my arrival was expected and I was being greeted and encouraged by the Universe itself, reaffirming my belief that right there was where I was meant to be at that very point in time. I found silence, solitude and serenity here, which is exactly what I was looking for. The beach as you can imagine is very secluded since not many people choose to do the long hike to reach it. I did see 3 boats pass by during my short stay. The beach itself offers very little shade but it is clean. I didn't see a lot of trash. Like others have said, there seems to be very deep mud right before you reach the beach. Beautiful sunset, saw an amazing Osprey and some spoonbills as well as pelicans flying around. You can see all the stars at night, which is incredible! If you plan on hiking the whole trail, make sure to not bring heavy weight, and bring lots of water. It was all flooded when I went but I’m sure it dries up...
