My husband and I made reservations to stay at Dove Creek Resort and Marina from November 23 and leave on November 27. We looked at the photos online and decided that would be a lovely room to stay in. We picked the Full Kitchen, which turned out to be room 309. When we checked in, I was led to the room. I was told that the door had just been painted and the room no. was not on the door yet. As soon as the door was opened, I could smell a strong musty/mildew odor. I figured it is Florida, so that might be par for the course. We brought up out luggage and relaxed. The patio was lovely, except you could not see the water. The trees were so overgrown and needed trimming. We were told it was just painted and we notice paint was splattered on the curtain, lampshade and floor. I believe that paint was poured down the sink. It looked like paint on the drain. Now the room looked nothing like the photos on the website. The bed was foam or something, not a normal bed and very hot. The headboard was a painted piece of wood and the frame was a painted piece of wood that was hand made. Nothing like the pictures. The door leading out to the patio had 2 wooded dowels to keep the doors closed, as the lock did not work. The lock apparently broke and they never fixed. Above the bed it appeared that the ceiling had fallen before because some of the wood was bowed. When I took a shower later that evening, I noticed they had dispensers for Body Wash, Conditioner and Shampoo, but there were no labels on them so I had no idea which was which. The shower wall had mildew on the grout and needed to be cleaned. The bathroom door had been oiled at the hinge on the inside and the grease was still on the door and had not been cleaned. I did notice some dirt/grease on the Bboard after you entered the room. There was a Panasonic radio or something but it did not have a power cord so it was useless. We explored the drawers in the kitchen and the one next to the stove smelled of sour dish rags. We looked around and finally found the fire extinguisher under the kitchen sink in the far back. Shouldn’t it be close in case it was needed? Was this room supposed to have and extra room because there was so much furniture that seemed out of place. After we got home, I started to compare pictures of the room and pictures of our room. For some reason they cut a hole to make a new door above the pool. It was where a window had been. When I checked in no one told me that we would have to call for room service because of Covid-19. I found that out on Wednesday. We tried Wednesday morning to call the desk and could not get the phone to work and if it did there were not instructions how to call the desk or how to make a call out. The gentleman at the office brought us soap and clean towels. Thursday, someone came to take out the trash and dirty towels. Since we had done without our room being cleaned, we could do without another day. We did notice that some of the railings by the steps were broken and a safety hazard. Dove Creek Resort and Marina could be an awesome Resort but is in need of repairs and tree trimming. The staff were awesome and very helpful. Unless some repairs and cleaning are done we will not be staying there again. After we arrived home I looked at reviews again and found that the room we had stayed in had the ceiling cave in on the bed with water from all the rain. Maybe that is where the mold/mildew...
Read moreI have been visiting Dove Creek for over 10 years and never once did I think I would ever be able to write a review listing anything other than perfection ! Once we arrived we checked into the "Key Lime" suite. Once inside we began to realize that the Hotel had sadly fallen way below its normal standard. We had a large screened in porch that over looks the Atlantic however the handle on sliding glass door was literally hanging off, as well as issues on screen door. Our "view" of the Atlantic was completely obstructed by trees that haven't been trimmed. These should have been signs of things to come however we were so happy to be back in the Keys we simply let it go. The next morning we were due to go offshore however weather was not our friend and we opted to take a daytrip to Key West instead. Upon our return to our room later that afternoon we noticed that part of the roof in our room had caved in directly over the bed. Chunks of the ceiling were laying on the bed and the bed was soaked completely through the mattress. We proceeded to call the front desk who responded quickly and moved us to another room. The room they moved us to was nothing close to what we booked however we also understand the concept of availability !
The following night were had decided to go to bed early as we planned on being on the water at 6am. Once we laid down the kids came running into the bedroom screaming as both the roof and door were now leaking in this room too. There was water pouring in through both the front door as well as the sliding glass door, Not to mention water coming through the ceiling and through outlets on the wall.
At that point I made my way to the front office justifiably upset only to find that there were no Hotel employees anywhere on property. I called a number that was listed on the door several times whilst standing in the pouring rain, When I was finally greeted by a contractor that was there "working" on one of the rooms. At first thinking that he was a Hotel employee I explained my situation. He then told me that he understood as the Hotel never wants to fix things correctly, But rather just "patch" issues as cheaply as possible.
Some time later I finally received a call later from the "Manager" who was less than helpful and when I voiced my extreme frustration was told that he didn't like my tone and suggested that we "Simply check out" as he was not prepared to drive back to the hotel.
The following day I met with both Him and the Owner who just walked off mid conversation after zero resolution. The "manager" again refused to understand my frustrations and made it all about him and the fact that I hurt his feelings in the way that I spoke to him.
We ended up checking out a day early as that afternoon a room once again started to leak and we had simply had enough !
We were offered a "partial" refund however quite frankly we should have been paid to stay there!
In short we miss the way Dove Creek used to be and wouldn't stay there again if our vehicle broke down out front and they offered us...
Read moreI usually do not feel compelled to write reviews, but this was a uniquely terrible experience. I cannot, in good faith, recommend that anybody stay here. We stayed for a night, and it is one of the most disastrous hotels I have ever visited.
Images of this hotel are wildly misleading and not at all what you receive. Furniture and TV (of which there are almost no channels) are obscenely outdated by what feels like decades. The rooms are dirty and tired; almost all of the floor and wall trim were chipped and lacked any sort of polish or upkeep. The walls themselves had marks and dirty stains that had not been bothered to be cleaned off. One person complained of bugs. Rust and dirt mar every bit of this hotel, and it is sad.
The pool area is small. There are no towels. The pool itself is almost constantly warm because of the hot sun. Because of the nearby marina, equally as run down, and the boiling sun, the pool smells heavily of fish; one person in our party said they could smell it from our room's deck. Everyone who went down there ended up having to take showers in case the smell stuck. Believe me, it is potent. The marina itself is not pleasant on the eyes and is an awkward, sore thumb compared to other views of Key Largo's waters. Snappers is hosted there, but do not anticipate going anywhere else within the general vicinity. You will have to drive out back onto the main road to find anything else to do or eat; the hotel lacks any other amenities or options.
It is terrible. The entire property is very clearly unmaintained and unloved. The disappointment between all of us was thick and uncomfortable having spent well over $300 for just one night just to be misled by what was shown online. I can only wish more reviews were honest about what this place is. It was a terrible first night to a highly anticipated trip and left everyone feeling bad. More time was spent trying to think of the positives of what we would do when we left the following morning to distract ourselves from the financial loss of booking even just a single night than actually enjoying a stay at Dove Creek.
This is an embarrassment. Family booked this hotel simply because the Wyndam name was attached and they had seen the grandiose resorts in Central FL only to be greeted with this sham of a resort; if you want to attach your company name to something, perhaps take the presentation of it into account, if only for your reputation. This place is scummy, and it took no more than a half hour for us to become saddened at it all. Please hold onto your money and find anywhere else in Key Largo-- an inconvenient location is many leagues better than one that feels like a deteriorating tourist trap...
