Quiet, secluded, beautiful views during the day, dark skies at night, and **FREE**! Good for tents, car camping, camper vans, travel trailers, and even motorhomes. No facilities other than a vault toilet. I got my 33ft Class A up here with plenty of room to move around but I wouldn't recommend anything much larger than that. Fair warning -- the road up the hill to the campground is narrow, winding, unpaved, and without guard rails. Like a washboard in a lot of areas. I drove it at night without a problem, but one should be comfortable and spatially aware of their rig if attempted. The only bathroom is a vault style and was as clean as the day it was built. First come, first serve. In the event the 7 or 8 dedicated camping sites are taken when you arrive, there is more space at the hilltop just outside the gate to the campground, but those don't have pavilions, picnic tables, or fire rings. There is a donation box at the front gate to the campground (voluntary but why wouldn't you??), a sign board with some information about the area, and a box with maps of the campground and recreation area. THIS gem is a stellar example of how our tax dollars can be used to provide enjoyment for everyone!

I prefer dispersed camping where I can find it (difficult to find in CA compared to most other states west of the Mississippi), but I'm usually prepared for dry camping when traveling. This one is interesting in that it was redeveloped by the Bureau of Land Management in recent history, the amenities are nice and some shadier spots, and has some historical interest. The vault toilet is nice if you happen to catch it after a recent cleaning and restocking. I found mid-July to be hot for the area (100°F) and the camp to be virtually unpopulated. The wind can kick up the dusty terrain pretty good, so be prepared to get saturated with it.

This is the best free campground in southern California for the winter months in our opinion. Great views and it's nicely situated up in the hills away from everything else and had good cell reception. Nice and quiet, only saw about 6 other campers the whole week we stayed here in February. Only has pit toilets but hey, you get what you pay for haha! Can get a bit dry and dusty at times so be prepared for that. Also there is no water in or near the campground so bring plenty of your own!

Not the best site to view the sunrise. May be good for sunset view over the valley. Although there is no electricity nor running water, there is a pit/vault toilet onsite. So do bring everything you'd need for survival. Really love the latest BLM campsite update with the wired picnic tables. Keeps the picnic tables clean. See pictures. Road to and at campground is very gravelly and sandy probably due to the nearby quarry. Our RV window actually shattered most likely from one of the pebbles that make up the non asphalt road from the bottom of the mountain to the campsite.

ATVs are allowed. And shooting is allowed 150 yards from campground. There are communication towers nearby so cellular signal is amazing (except for T-mobile). Not bad dark sky for star gazing. Better than the BLM campgrounds by San Benito -- Laguna mountain campground. Best dark sky (from silicon valley) is north by Indian valley reservoir by Wilbur springs. We saw the milky way across the sky like a rainbow or headband.

As Mike says, it was pretty windy at night, a bit smokey...

Arrived on a Sunday evening just before a new moon in order to take advantage of the dark skies. In an effort to get there before total darkness I blasted up the gravel road; not a problem for the car. Met several pickup trucks on the way down. At the campground was surprised by the fact that there were several OHVs grinding around, kicking up giant clouds of dust. These things are moved around on trailers, apparently not street-legal. Fortunately most of them headed down the hill early in evening, and those remaining eventually shut down for the night. Skies were beautifully dark and clear!! In the morning I was awakened by the song of a western screech owl--hint: it's not a screech at all!! On any future visits, I'll make sure I'm M-Th nights in hopes of avoiding another plague of OHV dust and noise. You can believe the AllTrails report that there are no good hiking trails around. As a nearby camper told me, the great things a spectacular sunrises...
