I've encountered challenges with waste disposal during my recent visit to Camp Dawson with my service dog. Unlike previous visits, this time I'm accompanied by my service animal, and I've noticed a discrepancy in dog waste management practices. Coonskin, the HQ with only office spaces, has dog waste bins?, but Camp Dawson, which has lodging facilities accommodating service dog handlers like myself, lacks them. Service dog handlers at Camp Dawson must carry waste bags to specific entrances with trash cans, which aren't available everywhere. Moreover, disposing of dog waste in indoor trash cans can be unsanitary, potentially contaminating the area and creating unpleasant odors. Designated receptacles are necessary for proper disposal. Notably, many hotels that don't allow pets still provide dog waste bins for service dogs, recognizing their importance.
I went to the front desk and asked if there was a complaint or suggestion form to formally document my concern, but I was told there wasn't one. When I shared my complaint with the staff member, their response was that they normally don't have service dogs on site. Interestingly, we were attending an event at Camp Dawson that also included another handler with a service dog, which highlights the need for better accommodations for service dog handlers.
Given the size of the Camp Dawson facility and the various areas where service dogs are likely to be present, I strongly recommend installing dog waste bins in numerous locations. Some key areas that would benefit from dog waste bins include:
Around the pond Throughout the RTI Near the PX Along the PT track At the MPB Outside each of the chalets
Having dog waste bins in these areas would greatly improve the experience for service dog handlers and help maintain a clean and sanitary environment for all visitors.
Other than this specific issue, I have never had any complaints or issues during my stays at Camp Dawson. I always enjoy my time here and appreciate the facilities and services provided. I hope that addressing this concern will further enhance the experience for service dog handlers...
