My adult daughter and I arrived in Walnut Grove, MN, on July 10, 2025, to attend the Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant taking place the next evening. I had booked a room for two nights at the closest hotel I could find near Walnut Grove. We checked in to the Oyo Hotel in Lamberton, MN, in the early afternoon and received a key for Room #6. My daughter and I had been relaxing in our respective beds reading for about a half hour when I felt something crawling behind my left knee. I reached for it and noticed I had caught an insect between my thumb and index finger. I tried to crush the insect several times with my thumb nail against my index finger without success. It was obviously unlike most insects which are easily crushed. It was approximately one and a half millimeters in length. At this point I suspected it was a bed bug because it was so resilient and based on photos I had seen. Since I could not kill it, I brought it to the sink and flushed it down the drain. I then told my daughter I had found a bed bug crawling on my leg. She is a nurse who is knowledgeable about bed bugs and told me we needed to leave the room. Because bed bugs are such a huge problem to eliminate once you carry them home, we decided we needed to take some protective measures. Fortunately, we had not yet opened or unpacked our luggage. We took the luggage out of the room and put them back in our vehicle. I went to the office and told the manager what had happened and that we could not stay in the room. He offered me the key to room #7, but we ended up declining because it was too great a risk that bed bugs could be present in other rooms at the same hotel. The manager stated that his staff would inspect the room. I had booked this prepaid room a couple of months before through an online booking site. I asked the manager about a refund. He said I would need to contact the booking company about any refunds. As we were in our vehicle getting ready to leave the hotel, the manager came to my window and announced they had inspected the room and found no bed bugs. I did not respond but was skeptical about the validity of their inspection. During my investigation after finding the bed bug I had briefly lifted the mattress to look for signs of bed bugs. These bugs leave brown spots due to feces they leave behind. But I noticed that the box spring under the mattress was a very dark color making it almost impossible to see such telltale signs. After leaving the hotel we had to search for a new hotel. We removed all the clothing we had worn in the Oyo Hotel room and sealed them in a bag. We later found a Laundromat to wash and dry the clothing because my daughter knew that high heat kills bed bugs. I contacted the hotel booking company to cancel the reservation at Oyo Hotel and ask about a possible refund. The cancelation terms of my reservation did not allow any refund for cancellations within three days of arrival or for no shows. However, there were extenuating circumstances since we did check in and intended to stay but had to leave after discovering a bed bug. The booking agent stated they would try to secure a refund for me but would have to contact the hotel to accomplish it. A few days later I received an email from the booking company explaining the results of their efforts to secure a refund. It stated that they had reached out to the hotel which refused to waive the penalty for my cancellation. The email further stated that their ability to refund the reservation is based on the hotel’s discretion. Because the hotel has refused to refund my money after I checked in and discovered a bed bug, I will never again stay at the Oyo...
Read moreWe stayed at this charming old-style motel during a road trip through the USA with our kids, and it was exactly what we were looking for—nothing fancy, just a clean and comfortable place to rest for the night.||The room was very clean and offered at a great price of $71, which is hard to beat. The beds were comfortable, and we appreciated that they even had some basic necessities for sale, like a toothbrush, which saved the day when our son lost his the night before.||There were a couple of minor issues—the heater in the bathroom was a bit rusty, likely due to its position near the tub where water collects, and the bathroom door lock didn't work. However, considering the overall cleanliness and the affordable price, these were small inconveniences that didn’t detract from our stay.||Overall, we would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone in need of a clean, affordable room while on the road. Perfect for a one-night stay...
Read moreLooks like a great little hotel but know in advance you get charged a cancellation fee. I had a reservation I made and cancelled one week in advance of the reserved stay and was charged $16.00. There was no mention of this when the reservation was made. I was told when calling the hotel, they could cancel the reservation but I'd have to call a special phone number to "check to see if they'd approve a refund for the cancellation," that they have no control over it themselves. Tried chatting with the OYO online help line - got a robotized message and was disconnected. Unfortunate service if this semi-independent motel is connected to a reservation system like that. Think twice if you might need to cancel - doesn't seem there's any real person to connect with. Tried sending a message through a help link and got an automated response of: PROCESSING ERROR, TRY LATER -...
