I wish I could give more stars! My friend and I simply needed a place to crash during our hiking trip to Grayson Highlands, but received way more. We arrived late on Friday to a well-lit building and easily found our suite. The lights were on, the key & wifi password was waiting on the counter and Dennis, the owner even had the heat going for us. The suite was very clean, well furnished, and perfect for 2 people or even 2 couples. There were pots and pans, dishes, mugs, and glasses in the cabinets, and in the bathroom, a modern washer and dryer. It had everything we needed and more. As we were headed to our adventure the next morning, we noticed Dennis in the shop and stopped in to say hello. He had checked the forecast on the mountain for us. It was colder than my friend had anticipated. Luckily, the store was outfitted with just about everything one would need for an adventure. This is where I want to mention the food selection. There was a healthy array of organic, non-GMO, and vegan options. I enjoyed touring the shelves. It was like looking through a culinary scrapbook of exciting travels. He even had spiedie sauce! Never heard of spiedie sauce? Unless you’re from Upstate NY, you’re not alone. It’s good, you should get some. After a long hike and a good nap, my friend and I went back downstairs to check out the restaurant where we ran into an aunt and niece duo we met on the AT. They were celebrating the niece’s 11th birthday. We introduced ourselves, chatted for a bit and discovered that this trip was extra special because the niece had lived the last 4 years in Jordan, where they are from. I mention this because Dennis prepared a special Middle Eastern appetizer for them. How awesome is that? - But wait, it gets better – after dinner, he surprised the niece with a birthday cake made from scratch, which he prepared earlier in the day. The niece shared it with everyone in the restaurant and I must say, it was the bomb! This review is long but necessary as I feel that such a place, modest and charming, should receive a proper review. Dennis and his brother Tim, who helps run the place, are just the nicest you’d ever want to meet. Their pride in this place certainly comes through. I can’t...
Read moreThis was a pleasant surprise. I spoke in depth with the owner who was a long time backpacker.
This store is not only a general store, with a wide variety of items for sale, but also a gas station, and a newly constructed Inn.
The owner is not only the proprietor, but he also works in the store, and not only cooked our gluten free pizza, but made me a fresh salad using greens he grew and cut in his own garden!
The general store: The general store has more stuff than I have ever seen in a general store. There are all sorts of items we can't even find in our local name brand grocery store... Just too many unique items to name. They also sell many brands of beer, and have a lot of the automotive items you might need for your RV or Camper while staying in Grayson Highlands Campground
The Ice Cream My wife said it as delicious! I think she said she noticed the brand was Hershey's
The Cafe: It was three tables, and to my surprise they had more than the standard chicken fingers, french fries and such..
They sell gluten free pizzas that they can cook for you, and also a decent variety of regular pizzas.
They also server breakfast, which we didn't get a chance to try.
Some extra things You may not appreciate this, but the plastic fork he gave me, and the container he served the salad in were both completely biodegradable! I think he said the fork was made out of some sort of sugar!
This store is worth a visit on a day you are exhausted from hiking! Maybe a day when you don't feel like cooking?
It is also one of only TWO places we saw withing about 30 miles that sold ready made food! Seriously, there is nothing around Grayson Highlands for Miles! That is part of the charm of the state...
Read moreA Hiker's Haven! My sister and I stayed here 3 nights while hiking in the area and we loved it! We stayed in the 2 bedroom suite which was extremely clean and had a well stocked kitchen with more than what we needed.
The general store had a huge selection and carried a little bit of everything. They had some unique products that we can't find at home. We ate 4 meals at the Store (breakfast twice and dinner twice) - the food was delicious and the service was excellent! (Ask for the Amish bread and Amish butter!!) Dennis, his brother, and the ladies who help him in the store were all so friendly and helpful. We were truly treated as if we were guests at their home versus customers at their store.
Dennis was helpful with our hiking plans and trail directions and made suggestions on what he thought we would enjoy.
The renovations he's made to the Inn are nice. A creek runs through the backyard of the Store/Inn and there is a deck where you can sit, relax and just enjoy watching the water flow. The beds were comfortable, the towels were large and thick and the water pressure was great. We had the best time and I hope that our travels will bring us back to the area so that we can stay here again! Thank you Dennis and Tim for making a...
