Tucked away in the northeast corner of our great country is where (to me) a magical place for veterans and their families to congregate for the annual bear retreat. I have to describe it as magical because it’s the place and people gives me the ability to “reset” myself. In the friendly and family like setting allows me the feeling of camaraderie and fellowship that I’ve only found through the military. This sets the stage for those lucky enough to experience it, a chance to get back to the feelings of brotherhood that only those who have worn the uniform will understand. I’m lucky enough to get to spend a couple weeks a year as a volunteer and sometimes a participant with my “second family.” It’s something that I stay excited for and and look forward to each year. I had never hunted before, but my desire to feed my family with a freezer full of meat had me interested in this opportunity. The experience for me was incredible from start to finish. The training that I was given, the superb knowledge of expert hunters, had me feeling confident and equipped to be able to be a hunter. Thanks to their knowledge, I was able to successfully shoot a doe, weighing in at 150 pounds. That's a trophy doe! The meat was beautifully processed for me and it is now in my freezer. This experience gave me confidence, it gave me a sense of accomplishment and achievement, and it gave me a sense of purpose because I was able to fill the freezer.
