Decided to go camping in the Berkshires last minute before Memorial Day weekend, and made frantic calls to local campgrounds while on the drive west from Boston. Other DCR campgrounds laughed at me for even calling to ask about availability, as most sites in the region were booked weeks in advance. Called October Mountain and a friendly name named Dave answered, and told me they had a few sites reserved for walk-ins that were still open, so we hit the gas and headed for this campground.
Checking in was wonderful -- a rarity in my experience. A man named Rico was especially helpful, selling us some wood, updating us on the local weather. This campground is expansive, winding above a small hill with some really beautiful sites climbing towards the top. Unfortunately, we were placed in what seemed to be the worst site in the entire camp, #10, which is literally in front of the contact station, with no privacy and no foliage. All of the sites in this front area seemed too close together, or tightly cramped.
The bathrooms were super clean and there was ample hot water for showers in the morning. We even got a pizza delivered here one evening - a treat while camping out! ...
Read moreCamped here July 19 for visit to Tanglewood. Based on my 1 day, I definitely recommend. We were at site 28. In that section, sites were very close together and rocky so bring an air mattress. Despite almost the whole campground occupied, there was peace and quiet. There is a no booze policy which probably helps. Wood is for sale at the campground, priced reasonably. Friendly helpful staff. The bathrooms were very clean, one shower stall in the ladies facility near us. Also has a very nice dishwashing station with hand spray attachment; fancy. I never heard the electrical substation noise mentioned in other reviews, however around 9am the Mass Hells Angels were convening at their nearby clubhouse. Which everyone heard. The campground is about a 15 minute drive to Tanglewood, very convenient. We drove into the state forest and hiked the Mt Washington “lake” loop. About 4 miles, lovely walk on well-maintained trail. If the site were level, and grassy instead of gravel it would be 5 stars. Site 25 looked nice,...
Read moreOverall this camp ground was great. Clean bathrooms, lots of personal space to move around, friendly and accommodating staff.. etc. The person working the site let us switch to a new site when we realized we didnt like our initial choice. That was awesome... My one major critique was that on the second day of our stay we woke up at like 9-10 to ride on lawn mowers plowing through grass and brush all around us which lasted up until we left for the day (3hrs or so). This was extremely annoying and disrupted our morning significantly... I dont even really write these reviews but I feel like it should be known because otherwise it wouldve been a perfect morning. My suggestion would be to schedule landscaping/maintenance to later in the day when guests are out hiking, biking, etc . Also the electrical plant is louder than advertised and the sites close to it arent...
