We love camping at Chatfield because it’s close to home for us and has so many great bike trails and areas to paddleboard. We meet a really nice couple they were the camp hosts in loop C because when we came to check in to our campsite at 3 pm someone was in our campsite and no camp host in loop B where we were suppose to stay site 67. It was so frustrating because check out is suppose to be at 12 pm and check in is at 1 pm and how we had to go about getting our site is camp host confirmed it was our site than having to call park rangers and tell us to wait in a holding lot till they talk to the people that stayed longer in the site we paid for. So turner into back and forth that they thought they had the site for Friday night and finally when they had to prove they booked it for 8.8 they couldn’t find the email so said they would leave we didn’t get into our site until 7 pm…. Park Ranger said they couldn’t do anything about compensation to call the office called the office and they did nothing either said to write a review so here we are. The camp hosts that are in loop B we have dealt with previously last year actually and they were trying to rush us out before 12 and right at 12 came over and the lady was so rude asking are you leaving or are we charging another night. Truck was hooked and we were talking with the other couple we were there with ready to go so wasn’t necessary said yes we are leaving and left. So for them to not kick out the people that took our site on 8/8 really made us made cause guess what when 8/10 12 pm check out came guess who came and rudely asked if we were leaving again the same rude camp host from last year.. This couple should not be allowed to host in the future if they aren’t going to uphold to making sure everyone is out at noon and how rude they are they need to find a new place. As far as the site it’s a really nice site big, spacious, little trees for shade but most the outer loop of B with the best water view doesn’t have a lot of trees. Close to the bike path from the loop and by...
Read moreI've camped all over the country and Colorado is one of the most frustrating states for camping. Campgrounds are $40-$50 for a night, almost as expensive as a motel. My personal experience of being basically black mailed: Parked my large SUV for the night at Chatfield campground. Arrived at 11pm and paid $12 for the 24hr car pass. I thought I was good, it was dark and one of the gates was half open, and campground was empty because it was a really cold night in February. If you camp you know how confusing it can be in the dark. Cooked a steak had a beer and went to sleep in my truck. I did not have a Trailer with me. Woke up to an incredibly rude Ranger talking about that the campground is closed and that I don't have a reservation. There was nobody else around?!? How bout you just move along and give someone camping a break in the Winter? Wrote me a $102.50 fine. I was beyond livid, I could have stayed in a frickin' motel and taken a hot shower after 5 days of being on the road!! Why do you think I'm at a campground in the first place in the dead of Winter? Bunch of baloney. Long story short, I didn't pay the fine in 20 days, which meant I had to go to court, which I couldn't, so I paid a "donation" of $160 to this ridiculous state. Now tell me it's not a police state if you can receive a warrant for not registering your campsite legally??? That's not America!?! My conclusion: State has gotten it's bills so high (you can see it in the bureaucratic infrastructure all over campsites from Denver to Ridgeway) that it's stealing...
Read moreWinter Review Only: I love this park in general but the campground (especially in the winter months) is a black eye on the face of the Colorado State Park System... Compared to other parks within 2 hours of the Denver metro area this one campground is a letdown. From the lack of soap dispensers in the bathrooms and the lack of cleanliness of the winter bathroom/shower house it's sad what we deal with as consumers for $37/night... For winter guests when snowfall is within 1-2 days of your visit they don't plow the sites pull-through drives so if there is snow be prepared to dig/salt your way out back onto the roads through the campground. It's worse when someone before you stayed on the site and packed down the snow and it turned into ice. Bring salt or a shovel...
Based on the facilities and the maintenance done (the shower/bath house facility was new like 6years ago and every year it disappoints more) I would give this park 1 star for the winter and 3 stars the other 6-7 months. The park is really great in general but it's sad how poorly they manage the campgrounds that generate so much revenue...
Winter update: I pulled into my site on 2/5 and the 110 power didn't work. The GFCI was blinking red and I tried to reset it a few times before looking up what sites were free and moving to one of those. For $37 I expect power hookups...
