This was an ok place overall. As far as price, it was great - only $25/night for an electric tent site, and there were no other tent campers there during my visit in mid-August. The firewood throughout the campground is free, but you'll need to take an axe to chop it. There is a shower house, but it looked like it hadn't been cleaned (or even set foot in) for a month, as all of the sinks and trash cans were home to multiple spiders and their prey. There was only one valve in the shower, but I didn't try it out to see whether it gave hot or cold water. The sinks did have both hot and cold water. The grass on the hill that had to be traversed to get to the shower house was long, and overall the area was unkempt. There were no toilets in the shower house, and the only facilities of that nature were outhouses, one of which smelled so bad that I couldn't enter it - even if I had a stronger stomach, there were spiders and other insects guarding the door. There was an outhouse closer to the entrance of the campground, which smelled better and had a broom available. I swept the spider webs from the ceilings, door, corners and toilet hole, which made using it more of an appealing/tolerable thought. The owner was friendly and helpful, and was accommodating even though I made a last minute reservation a few hours before arriving. All in all, the actual tenting area was nice, and the owner mentioned that I could move the table and fire ring to accommodate my preference. This is a great campground if you don't mind it being quite unkempt, or if you don't need to use the facilities. If you have a camper/RV, it would be perfect. For tenters, just be aware that the facilities are not modern or well-maintained, but the tent sites are nice and it's quite affordable. With a small amount of care and updating, I believe this could be an...
Read moreMy stay at the Palmerosa was wonderful! My friends and I came with seven horses, and I hauled my teardrop camper in from out of state and stayed at a site with water and electric. The campground is lovely and well kept, and the grounds keeper Bronson, and the owners Chad and Mindy were kind and accommodating- they really care about their guests and are invested in making your stay as pleasant as possible.
As for what you can expect- the sites are all level and gravel with a fire ring. Many have a picnic table. The pit toilets are clean and well lit (they don't smell bad!!! And they're pit toilets!) The showers up at the office are fantastic- big, bright, clean, and great water pressure. They were a highlight of my stay as most campsites don't have such nice facilities, and being able to take a real shower after a long day in the saddle was a game changer.
For the horses- the corrals were a nice size, with open fronts and slatted sides for air flow. Bring your own bedding, pitch fork, hay, water buckets (and stuff to hang them), and fence feeder. The wash pad has two spigots, so bring a long hose (not provided). They do have a wheelbarrow. I stayed in the site closest to the poo pile near corrals 1-6, and when it got smelly I asked if they could clear it out and it was done within the hour.
The ride to the trails is pretty easy. I put 4 shoes on my horse for this trip and I'm glad I did, however we had a couple horses with nice hard feet go barefoot and they were perfectly fine. The trails were a bit rocky and the mud was pretty impressive in places- I'm glad we came during a dry period. Riding your horse into a huge cavern is pretty darn cool!
To wrap up- Palmerosa was lovely. Great value for the money. I would stay...
Read moreEnjoyed three nights in the Buckeye Cabin! Loved the screened in porch in the evenings - the spacious 'backyard' firepit area and the clean, cozy cabin! Plenty of trees provided shade and wonderful places for our hammocks! Beds were comfy and the cabin was adorable! We took two horses and used stalls 1 and 2. They were well constructed and roomy. We were with friends that camped with their 4 horses. There are high-lines in multiple places, as well as very clean restrooms. There are two shower house that were VERY clean and totally private. In order to get on the nearby equestrian trails, you must ride a little over a mile on the road, but it was no problem. Did the Buckskin Canyon trail - which was quite a hill and the trail is close to a pretty hefty drop, so I would say EXPERIENCED horses and riders only for this one. My daughter and friends did the Badger Cave trail and and said it was well maintained and beautiful. Some rocky spots - but the horses really seemed to enjoy it! For your non-horsey friends - Old Man's Cave is a15/20 minute drive from this campground. If you need some yummy food or forget anything - go to Grandma Faye's Grocery. They have about anything you could possibly need! Highly recommend Palmerosa Horse and Hike Campground and plan to return again...
